This book was released on 2013 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional three-phase AC-DC converters have two converter stages. They have a front-end converter that converts the input AC voltage into an intermediate DC bus voltage and a second, back-end converter that converts this DC bus voltage into the desired isolated DC output voltage. The front-end converter also performs power factor correction (PFC) and shapes the three-phase input currents so that they are nearly sinusoidal and in phase with the three-phase input voltages. This allows the AC power source to be used in the most efficient manner. The front-end AC-DC converter is typically implemented with six switches while the back-end DC-DC converter is typically implemented with a four switch DC-DC full-bridge topology. Power electronic researchers have been motivated to try to reduce the number of switches that are used in the conventional two-stage approach in order to reduce cost and simplify the overall AC-DC converter. There are two general approaches to doing this: This first approach is to reduce the number of switches in the front-end AC-DC converter. The second approach is to combine the AC-DC converter and the DC-DC converter in a single converter so that the overall AC-DC converter can be implemented in a single converter stage that can simultaneously perform AC-DC power conversion with PFC and DC-DC power conversion. The main focus of this thesis is on new power converter topologies that convert a three-phase AC input voltage into an isolated DC output voltage with a reduced number of switches. In the thesis, a new family of reduced switch front-end converter topologies is proposed, an example converter from this new family is selected for further study and a modified version of this topology is studied as well. In addition to these front-end converters, two new three-phase AC-DC single-stage converters are proposed and their properties and characteristics are compared. For each new converter that is investigated in detail, its modes of operation are explained, its steady-state characteristics are determined by mathematical analysis, and the results of the analysis are used to develop a design procedure that can be used to select key components. The design procedure of each new converter is demonstrated with an example that was used in the implementation of an experimental prototype that confirmed the feasibility of the converter. The thesis concludes by presenting that have been reached as a result of the work that was performed, stating its main contributions to the power electronics literature and suggesting future research that can be done based on the thesis work.

Book excerpt: This thesis proposes a three-level DC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter and its extension to single-phase, single-stage, three-level AC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter. The AC-to-DC converter integrates a three-level boost converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and a three-level half-bridge DC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter. The steady-state operation of the DC-to-DC converter and AC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter are studied with phase-shifted gating scheme. The three-level topology reduces the voltage rating of the switches to half of the input voltage. Soft-switching is achieved for switches at different load and input voltage conditions. Boost section of the AC-to-DC converter achieves automatic power factor correction (PFC). At reduced load and higher input voltage conditions, the line current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) increases with phase-shifted gating scheme. The THD has been reduced by using a complementary PWM gating control in the AC-to-DC converter.

Book excerpt: AC voltage frequency changes is one of the most important functions of solid state power converters. The most desirable features in frequency converters are the ability to generate load voltages with arbitrary amplitude and frequency, sinusoidal currents and voltages waveforms; the possibility of providing unity power factor for any load; and, finally, a simple and compact power circuit. Over the past decades, a number of different frequency converter topologies have appeared in the literature, but only the converters with either a voltage or current DC link are commonly used in industrial applications. Improvements in power semiconductor switches over recent years have resulted in the development of many structures of AC-AC converters without DC electric energy storage. Such converters are an alternative solution for frequently recommended systems with DC energy storage and are characterized by a lower price, smaller size and longer lifetime. Most of the these topologies are based on the structure of the matrix converter. Three-Phase AC-AC Power Converters Based On Matrix Converter Topology: Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept presents a review of power frequency converters, with special attention paid to converters without DC energy storage. Particular attention is paid to nine new converters named matrix-reactance frequency converters which have been developed by the author and the team of researchers from Institute of Electrical Engineering at the University of Zielona Góra. The topologies of the presented matrix-reactance frequency converters are based on a three-phase unipolar buck-boost matrix-reactance chopper with source or load switches arranged as in a matrix converter. This kind of approach makes it possible to obtain an output voltage greater than the input one (similar to that in a matrix-reactance chopper) and a frequency conversion (similar to that in a matrix converter). Written for researchers and Ph.D. students working in the field of power electronics converters and drive systems, Three-Phase AC-AC Power Converters Based On Matrix Converter Topology: Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept will also be valuable to power electronics converter designers and users; R&D centers; and readers needing industry solutions in variable speed drive systems, such as automation and aviation.

Book excerpt: This book presents novel contributions in the development of solid-state-transformer (SST) technology both for medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) utility grid interfaces, which can potentially augment the grid modernization process in the evolving power system paradigm. For the MV interface, a single-stage AC-DC SST submodule topology has been proposed, and its modulation and soft-switching possibilities are analysed, experimentally validated and adequately benchmarked. A control scheme with power balance capability among submodules is developed for MV grid-connected single-stage AC-DC SST for smooth operation under inevitable parameter drift scenario, and experimental validation shows excellent performance under drastic load change conditions. A novel machine learning-aided multi-objective design optimization framework for grid-connected SST is developed and experimentally validated, which equips a power electronics design engineer with meagre computational resources to find out the most optimal SST design in a convenient time-frame. This book has also contributed towards the development of dual-active-bridge (DAB)-type and non-DAB-type LV grid-interfaced isolated AC-DC converters by providing solutions to specific topology and modulation-related shortcomings in these two types of topologies. A comprehensive comparison of the DAB and non-DAB-type LVAC-LVDC converters reveals the superiority of DAB-type conversion strategy.

Book excerpt: Switch-Mode Power Converters introduces an innovative, highly analytical approach to symbolic, closed-form solutions for switched-mode power converter circuits. This is a highly relevant topic to power electronics students and professionals who are involved in the design and analysis of electrical power converters. The author uses extensive equations to explain how solid-state switches convert electrical voltages from one level to another, so that electronic devices (e.g., audio speakers, CD players, DVD players, etc.) can use different voltages more effectively to perform their various functions. Most existing comparable books published as recently as 2002 do not discuss closed-loop operations, nor do they provide either DC closed-loop regulation equations or AC loop gain (stability) formulae. The author Wu, a leading engineer at Lockheed Martin, fills this gap and provides among the first descriptions of how error amplifiers are designed in conjunction with closed-loop bandwidth selection. BENEFIT TO THE READER: Readers will gain a mathematically rigorous introduction to numerous, closed-form solutions that are readily applicable to the design and development of various switch-mode power converters. Provides symbolic, closed-form solutions for DC and AC studies Provides techniques for expressing close-loop operation Gives readers the ability to perform closed-loop regulation and sensitivity studies Gives readers the ability to design error amplifiers with precision Employs the concept of the continuity of states in matrix form Gives accelerated time-domain, steady-state studies using Laplace transform Gives accelerated time-domain studies using state transition Extensive use of matrix, linear algebra, implicit functions, and Jacobian determinants Enables the determination of power stage gain that otherwise could not be obtained

Book excerpt: In recent years, considerable research activity has been conducted in the area of single-stage power factor corrected ac/dc converters. In these circuits, line current power factor correction and output voltage regulation for good transient response, are performed in a single converter stage. The general consensus of opinion has been that the single-stage approach has cost and efficiency advantages at unity power factor operation, and cost effective compliance with the EN61000-3-2 harmonic standard is regarded as a satisfactory design goal. This research is therefore concerned with the investigation of novel, single-stage, EN61000-3-2-compliant ac/dc converters, for 100W output, with particular emphasis on low voltage applications and resonant conversion. It is felt that single-stage ac/dc power conversion to the expected microprocessor voltage levels of 1-2V is unlikely, but that single-stage conversion to 5V/3.3V levels will have a wide range of applications. The emphasis on resonant conversion is prompted by the need to achieve high density ac/dc converters comparable with their ac/dc counterparts. Resonant operation will remove the frequency dependent losses in the semiconductor components, allowing significantly higher than normal frequencies to be employed and hence, enabling the size of the magnetic components to be reduced. Three novel topologies are derived in this thesis, all of which are based on a resonant circuit employed in compact fluorescent lighting applications. In all of these circuits, a resonant capacitor is connected directly across the input diode bridge rectifier. Through the operation of the resonant circuit resonant current is drawn directly from the ac utility over much of the line cycle. While this line current is not sinusoidal, it does comply with the EN61000-3-2 harmonic limits. Closely regulated output voltagecontrol is implemented in the three circuits. An intuitive, yet powerful analysis method, termed Rectifier-Compensated Fundamental Mode Approximation (RCFMA) Analysis, is applied to the converters. This is shown to be an accurate and insightful method, and much simpler to use than the highly accurate, but unwieldy, modal analysis technique. This analysis method is extended to provide a small-signal model for two of the converters. This proves very useful in the design of the control loop compensation. Two of the novel converters are extensively analysed, design procedures are developed and extensive prototype testing is performed. The prototypes designed are for European input voltage/5V output, and universal input voltage/3.3V output respectively.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-level isolated AC-DC power factor corrected (PFC) converter provides safe and more efficient power conversion. In comparison with two-level, three-level PFC converter has the advantages of low total harmonic distortion, low device voltage rating, low di/dt, better output performance, high power factor, and low switching losses at higher switching frequencies. The high frequency transformer (HFT) grants galvanic isolation, steps up or down secondary voltage, and limits damage in case of a fault current. The existing three-level converter based on solid-state transformer (SST) topologies convert ac power from the electrical grid to a dc load while maintaining at least the minimum requirements set by the international standards (i.e., high power factor and low total harmonic distortion). The SST topologies with the capability of controlling intermediate dc-bus and output voltage simultaneously require two full bridges at the primary and secondary side of the HFT. As the power level increases, the number of cascaded bridges increases accordingly, and the price associated with these semiconductor devices becomes highly expensive. As result, the demand of converting high power level led to emphasis on high performance and cost-effective power conversion topology. The aim of this dissertation is to develop a new low-cost and high-performance three-level isolated AC-DC (PFC) converter topology. The proposed topology replaces the conventional three-level inverter in the secondary side of the HFT by only two switches and four diodes while still maintaining the basic functionality of a three-level converter (i.e., regulating the output voltage, controlling the dc-bus voltage to be within desired limits). The advantages of this new topology are: (1) low conduction losses; (2) low-cost; (3) no need to consider the issue of the power backflow; (4) zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero-current switching (ZCS) at turn ON are inherently guaranteed without any extra control effort. Two isolated three-level AC-DC power converter topologies are developed and investigated through the dissertation. First topology is based on the neutral point clamping (NPC) converter, and the second topology composed of the T-type converter. Two scale-down prototypes rated at 900-W and 1kW, 200 V are built to test the overall performance of the proposed topologies. The first and second topologies exhibit 94.5 % and 95.8 % efficiency scaled at a nominal power, respectively. The secondary bridge (novel circuit) in both topologies, which consists of two switches and four diodes, has 99.34 % practical efficiency.

As such, research has blossomed during the last decade, and the SRM and variable drive systems using SRMs are receiving considerable attention from industry. Because they require a power electronic converter and controller to function, however, successful realization of an SRM variable drive system demands an understanding of the converter and controller subsystems and their integration with the machine. Switched Reluctance Motor Drives provides that understanding. It presents a unified view of the machine and its drive system from all of its system and subsystem aspects. With a careful balance of theory and implementation, the author develops the analysis and design of SRMs from first principles, introduces a wide variety of power converters available for driving the SRM, and systematically presents both low- and high-performance controllers. The book includes an in-depth study of acoustic noise and its minimization along with application examples that include comparisons between ac and dc drives and SRM drive. The result is the first book that provides a state-of-the-art knowledge of SRMs, power converters, and their use with both sensor-based and sensorless controllers. Switched Reluctance Motor Drives enables both students and engineers to learn all aspects of SRM drive systems and appreciate the interdependence of the various subsystems in performance optimization.

Book excerpt: The world energy demand has been increasing in a rapid manner with the increase of population and rising standard of living. The world population has nearly doubled in the last 40 years from 3.7 billion people to the present 7 billion people. It is anticipated that world population will grow towards 8 billion around 2030. Furthermore, the conventional fossil fuel supplies become unsustainable as the energy demand in emerging big economies such as China and India would rise tremendously where the China will increase its energy demand by 75% and India by 100% in the next 25 years. With dwindling natural resources, many countries throughout the world have increasingly invested in renewable resources such as photovoltaics (PV) and wind. The world has seen immense growth in global photovoltaic power generation over the last few decades. For example, in Australia, renewable resources represented nearly 15% of total power generation in 2013. Among renewable resources, solar and wind account for 38% of generation. In near future, energy in the domestic and industrial sector will become ""ubiquitous"" where consumers would have multiple sources to get their energy. Another such prediction is that co-location of solar and electrical storage will see a rapid growth in global domestic and industrial sectors; conventional power companies, which dominate the electricity market, will face increasing challenges in maintaining their incumbent business models. The efficiency, reliability and cost-effectiveness of the power converters used to interface PV panels to the mains grid and other types of off-grid loads are of major concern in the process of system design. This book describes state-of-the-art power electronic converter topologies used in various PV power conversion schemes. This book aims to provide a reader with a wide variety of topologies applied in different circumstances so that the reader would be able to make an educated choice for a given application.
