Book excerpt: New Hampshire Fish and Game Biologist, Andrew Schafermeyer has published a collection of short stories and illustrations based on his experience fly fishing in New England. The book, entitled Three Idiots With Fly Rods recalls the true adventures of three characters as they develop their skills and undertake adventures while fishing and camping all over New England. In his own words, it is "a collection of fishing stories that have little to do with fishing" instead focusing on friendship, misadventure and the bonds created by both. Throughout these stories, Schafermeyer's expertise shines through and readers will be exposed to methods, locations, and technical advice related to fishing for trout and salmon. In addition, readers will laugh out loud as he recalls personal experiences with equipment failure, near drownings, and the occasional medical emergency in the deep woods.Having written the North Country Fishing Report for many years, Schafermeyer has developed a loyal readership and within the pages of this book, his humor and wit are effectively interlaced with sound science and unique insight.

Book excerpt: The contemporary western mystery series follows the further adventures of a half Indian cattle inspector and “character of legendary proportions” (Ridley Pearson). Officially, Gabriel Du Pré is the cattle inspector for Toussaint, Montana, responsible for making sure no one tries to sell cattle branded by another ranch. Unofficially, he is responsible for much more than cows’ backsides. The barren country around Toussaint is too vast for the town’s small police force, and so, when needed, this hard-nosed Métis Indian lends a hand. In Gabriel Du Pré, “Bowen has taken the antihero of Hemingway and Hammett and brought him up to date . . . a fresh, memorable character” (The New York Times Book Review). The Stick Game: After a Native American boy turns up dead, Du Pré takes on a mining company that’s poisoning reservation children. Is there something more sinister than greed and indifference at work? “Wonderful . . . wise.” —The Washington Post Book World Cruzatte and Maria: While reluctantly serving as a consultant for a documentary about Lewis and Clark’s expedition up the Missouri River, Du Pré stumbles upon a national treasure: Meriwether Lewis’s lost journals. Then members of the film crew start dying . . . “A solid entry in a great series.” —Booklist Ash Child: In the midst of a drought in Toussaint, Montana, brushfires, meth dealers, and murder challenge the Métis Indian tracker and cattle investigator. “Compelling . . . plenty of action . . . a pleasure to read.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: You may come to the same conclusion another reader came to when I was in the early process of simply sending my stories out to gauge the interest of a potential book. She said, "You have led a charmed life." My first reaction was, "Are you nuts?" The fact is, although I grew up differently than almost all of you, I haven't had a charmed life, believe me. That sounds like in some way I have been "lucky" that I haven't experienced hardships, pain, or defeat. Nothing could be further from the truth. But I will tell you what is true, I have had a blessed life. Through it all, the Lord has kept me above my trials and tribulations, even when I didn't believe He was there. Through disappointment, death, disease, He was there. I truly believe that we all have choices to make in life. You can allow disappointments and discouragement in life to make you bitter, or you can use them to make you better. That's why I titled this book Sunny Side Up. It's how you view your circumstances and how you use them that make us who we are. To me, it's always been that simple, and before you ask, no, I am not a Southern version of Tony Robbins. I am just telling you the way I see it. So with that being said, I hope you will find some of these short stories humorous. I hope a few of them will give you pause to appreciate your blessings and one or two that will tug at your heartstrings to encourage you to be a better friend and neighbor. I know that some of these stories, if not all, will seem far-fetched or unbelievable to many of you, but like I said, I grew up differently than most of you, and my experiences in this life, to say it bluntly, are unbelievable in themselves. But this book really isn't about me at all; I am just a storyteller. I love telling stories about characters with character, and there are plenty of both in the stories before you. And before I forget, on behalf of my German shepherd Sadie and my black Lab Doc and myself, thank you for buying this book. We greatly appreciate it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir captures the essence of light tackle fishing in its prime from Palm Beach to the Florida Keys, from the Everglades to the Ten Thousand Islands. In short, the best snook-fishing spots on the planet. Author chronicles his fishing adventures from Sanibel to the tarpon capital of the world—Boca Grande—to rivers like the Manatee River and the Little Manatee in Manatee County, the Myakka River in Sarasota County, the Peace River, and the Caloosahatchee River, which teemed with fish. Colorful characters like Fat Wally, Dick Clevenger, and Frank the Net (as rugged and eclectic as his ’66 International Harvester) take the author under their wings and show him where the fish are. Others, like Dennis Hart, Walt Winton, Mark Riehemann, Pete Stroble, and Ray Moss (a.k.a. Fertile Myrtle), become lifelong friends. In addition to being an immensely entertaining read with a colorful cast of characters, this book has a strong environmental message and is a cautionary tale about the loss of over seven million acres of pristine wetlands, the explosive growth of the sugarcane industry, the abomination of large-scale citrus farming, the foolhardiness of removing the oxbows and dredging Kissimmee River, and the damaging effects of damming and diking of Lake Okeechobee.

Andrews Cheechakoes in Wonderland is the story of a young couple from the suburbs of New Jersey consigned by Uncle Sam to two years on the remote planet of Southeast Alaska, who returned by choice to live, work, recreate in the out-of-doors, and raise a family. It’s a story of what life was like a generation or two or three ago on America’s Last Frontier, a unique place still very much outside the realm of most peoples’ experience. The author’s goal is to interest, educate, entertain, and perhaps inspire others to take the plunge and live their dream.
