Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explores novel approaches to understanding the role of emotions on entrepreneurship through discussions contained in three essays. The first essay hypothesizes that emotional cultures influence perceptions and judgments that are precursors to entrepreneurial activity, and can thus account for additional cross-national variation beyond traditional economic indicators and commonly studied cultural values. The data used to reach this conclusion comes from 87 countries surveyed by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor and Gallup World Poll over the past decade, and longitudinal multilevel modeling shows that people in countries with higher levels of positive emotions perceive more entrepreneurial opportunities, while higher levels of negative emotions are associated with greater levels of latent entrepreneurship. Failures and setbacks are common experiences for entrepreneurs and those in entrepreneurial careers. The second essay examines whether appraisals following failure influence emotions, and whether these emotions, in turn, influence coping. Specifically, it examines appraisals, emotional responses, and coping among university faculty following an academic manuscript rejection, which is well represented as an entrepreneurial endeavor. Based on the cognitive appraisal approach, I predict that appraisals of rejection indirectly influence the use of active and avoidance coping through emotions. I tested the predictions using path analysis of data collected from a sample of 145 research faculty who were surveyed about their most recent manuscript rejection. I found that perceived fairness, perceived effort, career risk, and journal prestige influenced active and avoidance coping through the experience of outward harm, inward harm/threat, and challenge emotions. That most entrepreneurs experience significant grief when their businesses fail is widely acknowledged, but to date, entrepreneurship scholars have treated this grief as something to be minimized or overcome. The third essay develops an emotion theory-derived framework that shows how emotions such as sadness and anger can be adaptive; specific negative emotions drive a set of concomitant responses---physiological, behavioral, experiential, appraisal, and action readiness---that can enable an entrepreneur to address the costs of failure quickly. The essay also discusses how grief-related emotions guide the sensemaking process, which is crucial to the recovery of an entrepreneurial self-identity.

In Chapter 1, a field study and experiment on regulatory focus reveal that investors pose promotion-focused questions in the domain of gains to male entrepreneurs and prevention-focused questions in the domain of losses to female entrepreneurs, helping to explain the sizable gap in their respective funding outcomes. Chapter 2’s archival and experimental studies pertaining to regulatory mode indicate that organizations with mission statements high in locomotion (the mode of urgent action) and low in assessment (the mode of thoughtful consideration) have a greater likelihood and frequency of involvement in Equal Employment Opportunity Commission cases of discrimination. Across an observational and experimental study, Chapter 3 shows entrepreneurs seek regulatory fit in the form of social identity alignment that helps to explain variations in talent selection and retention, with those manifesting the identity of a “builder” (motivated to incrementally improve over time) exhibiting higher tenure rates than those manifesting the identity of a “disrupter” (motivated to break with the status quo). Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is comprised of three essays that address the question: what specific cognitions lead to the formation of entrepreneurial intentions? Essay 1, "Explaining and Predicting Entrepreneurial Intentions" investigates currently theorized antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions to determine the degree to which they predict entrepreneurial intentions. Findings suggest that proximal cognitions such as feelings, desires, emotions, and attitudes predict intention formation, albeit limited to situations where entrepreneurial behavior is imminent. Additionally, distal cognitions, such as biases, heuristics, scripts and maps, although useful in explaining intentions, are of little predictive value except when predicting the distal intention to become an entrepreneur in those with no entrepreneurial experience. Overall, results indicate that the antecedents used to explain entrepreneurial intentions are of limited predictive value. Essay 2, "The Role of Cognitions in the Formation of an Entrepreneurial Mindset" examines which specific core-level antecedents act to form entrepreneurial mindset and how these cognitions relate to the formation of entrepreneurial intentions. It posits that core-level cognitions related to "the self (entity-schema, possible-self, and self-efficacy) lead to the formation of an entrepreneurial mindset. The essay further posits that entrepreneurial mindset is the principal antecedent to entrepreneurial intentions. This conceptual investigation culminates in the presentation of a general theory of volitional behavior. Essay 3, "An Empirical Evaluation of Entrepreneurial Mindset Using the Theory of Volitional Behavior" tests to what degree entrepreneurial mindset affects the formation of entrepreneurial intentions. Results indicate that individuals who possess an entrepreneurial entity-schema, an entrepreneurial possible-self, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy, on average, tend to form an entrepreneurial mindset. Furthermore, those individuals possessing an entrepreneurial mindset are more likely to form entrepreneurial intentions and ergo, are most likely to undertake entrepreneurial behavior. When taken together, these three essays show that (1) currently theorized antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions, although useful for explaining entrepreneurial intentions, are of limited use in the prediction of intention formation. (2) Core-level cognitions, specifically those relating to "the self, represent a viable means of predicting formation of an entrepreneurial mindset. (3) Entrepreneurial mindset leads to the formation of entrepreneurial intentions, which offer one possible answer to the primary research question, what specific cognitions lead to the formation of entrepreneurial intentions?
