This chapter shows that bilateral trade deficits are robust predictors of tariff increases. The interactions between trade and budgetary balances are also explored and suggest that budgetary imbalances also contribute to the resurgence of trade tensions. The second chapter focuses on the consequences of financial globalization. Profit shifting can result in a downward distortion of productivity in companies and countries with high taxes. This hypothesis is tested on a database made up of all French companies and their foreign subsidiaries between 1997 and 2015. The opening of a subsidiary in a tax haven is associated with a systematic drop in productivity recorded in France. with a magnitude of 3%.The last chapter of the thesis asks the question of the implications of investment protection tools on the incentives of States to regulate. The misuse of these treaties can theoretically discourage States from regulating. This hypothesis is tested on the basis of the tobacco industry which has experienced significant regulatory change since 2005 and which has also been the scene of investor-State disputes. The initiation of dispute resolution is associated with a significant drop in the probability of adoption by other countries, which lends credence to the hypothesis of misuse of these legal tools.

An important but under-researched issue for medical malpractice (med-mal) litigation is how physicians' previous medical malpractice experiences affect their behaviour. Using Florida data on closed med-mal claims, I find that if physicians have prior paid claims, their current litigation is resolved faster and is associated with less cost. Having a prior payout does not significantly predict the likelihood or the amount of the current payout. This suggests that ``learning'' occurs as a result of prior med-mal experience. As a theoretical motivation, I developed a dynamic version of the divergent expectations (DE) litigation model. The model predicts, consistent with the data, that physicians have a more realistic analysis of med-mal litigation if they have prior experience. Many robustness checks are carried out to test the results, including using a fixed effect framework, to which the results are robust. In the second chapter, we investigate the impact of ``duty to settle'' rule in predicting patterns in data. Prior models and studies of settlement ignore the insurer's ``duty to settle'' -- the obligation to settle within policy limits if it would be unreasonable to refuse a within-limits settlement offer. We incorporate the duty to settle into a structural model of settlement of medical malpractice claims, and then estimate the model using maximum likelihood methods applied to a Texas closed claims database. Both the data and our model predict: a mass of cases with a settlement demand by the plaintiff exactly at limits; a smaller but still sizeable mass of cases with settlement exactly at limits; very few above-limits payments by insureds; and when above-limits payments are made, they are often by insurers. The model does a reasonable job in predicting data moments, including fractions of cases settled at limits, settled above limits, and tried. Using the model in counterfactual analysis, we predict: (i) with no duty to settle, more cases will be tried; (ii) with strict insurer liability for not settling within limits, there will be fewer trials and more above limits payments by insurers; and (iii) the duty to settle will rarely cause insurers to pay more than the expected value of claims. The third chapter of this dissertation is on international trade. There is a well established literature on the impact of sovereign debt renegotiation on bilateral trade, including Rose (2005) among others. However, there is no study that disentangles impacts of renegotiation on the intensive and extensive margins, where the former is the trade volume of established bilateral trading relationships and the latter is the number of established relationships. This study employs the UNComTrade dataset and debt renegotiation data from the Paris Club for over 150 countries in order to address the impact of a debt renegotiation on the extensive margin of trade. This paper finds that bilateral trade volume declines following a sovereign debt renegotiation. The result is robust to the use of trade lags as instrumental variables to address endogeneity. Consistent with the trade literature, this study documents a negative impact of a debt renegotiation on the trade value using the Tobit approach in a fixed effect model, to appropriately handle censored data. Interestingly, a comparison between the marginal impacts of a debt renegotiation on the extensive and the intensive margins shows that the former effect has at least the same magnitude as the latter.

Book excerpt: The first chapter explores whether foreign aid is effective in improving welfare by focusing on the effect of aid on improvements in life expectancy, GDP per capita and the Human Development Index (HDI). It uses a novel instrument based on a U.S. law to establish causal links between aid and welfare. It finds foreign aid has substantial positive effect on improvements in life expectancy in developing countries. In particular increase in aid per capita of 50 dollars per person causes an increase in life expectancy of one year. The effect of aid on improvements in the HDI is also large and positive. The chapter also finds that effect of aid on these indicators has been much higher outside Sub Saharan Africa than inside. The second chapter explores the effect of bilateral trade intensity on business cycle synchronization using free trade agreement as an instrument for bilateral trade in a sample of 25 industrialized countries spanning a period of thirty years. It finds bilateral trade positively affects business cycle synchronization. The magnitude of the effect is much larger than previously estimated in the literature and thus seem to worsen the trade-comovement puzzle. In particular, the chapter finds that regional free trade agreements increase bilateral trade by about 40 percent. A forty percent increase in the bilateral trade intensity between two countries causes the business cycle correlation between them to increase by 0.10 to 0.16. The third chapter reviews the evidence for both short and long horizon uncovered interest parity (UIP) and rational expectations over the period up to 2011. We find that the joint hypothesis of UIP and rational expectations (known as the unbiasedness hypothesis) holds better at long horizons than at short, although the effect is somewhat weaker than documented in Chinn and Meredith (2004). Using the formula for the slope coefficient, we identify potential sources for the difference in slope coefficients at different horizons. We attribute our weaker findings for long horizon unbiasedness for certain currencies partly to the advent of extraordinarily low interest rates associated with the zero interest bound in Japan and Switzerland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays on the persistence and convergence of prices in the European Union. In the first essay I study price differentials in the Eurozone by comparing prices for specific goods between European cities, and estimate their persistence. The second essay tests the effect of the single market and single currency (euro) on price convergence in the European Union. The third essay tests the effect of trade on price convergence. In my first essay, using the Economist Intelligence Unit data I find that the Southern countries of the Eurozone have consistently lower prices. While the Core states such as Germany and France are more expensive, price differentials within the Core are very low. Using panel data I estimate the persistence of deviations from the Law of One Price by employing linear and nonlinear panel unit root tests that account for contemporaneous as well as serial correlation. Based on the linear test, the estimated half-lives of the deviations from the Law of One Price are 13 months for traded goods and 15 months for non-traded goods. Price differentials for certain traded goods revert to parity at different speeds, for example prices for food adjusts much faster than for cars. Splitting the data series for individual goods into stationary and non-stationary components reduces the half-lives to 3 months for traded goods and 5 months for non-traded goods. The results of the nonlinear test suggest that the speed of reversion to parity is constant and independent of the size of the deviations, which implies prices based on good-specific data adjust in a linear rather than a nonlinear fashion. The implementation of international treaties in the European Union was expected to promote integration of consumer markets. In my second essay, I analyze the convergence of prices for a range of traded goods. Large price differentials remain across Europe. Using high income non-euro European countries as a control group, I test the effect of the euro and the earlier implemented Single European Act on the convergence of prices in the European Union. Using a difference-in-difference estimation strategy, I find that the Single European Act, rather than the common currency, reduced price differentials and promoted price convergence. Wide price differences still exist across the members of the European Union. While differentials among the ``old'' EU members have changed little over time, large price differentials between the Eastern and Central EU and the Eurozone have reduced significantly, with prices completely converging to the levels of the Southern EU. In my third essay I test the effect of trade on price differentials. The fixed effects estimate shows strong correlation between price differentials and bilateral trade, a 1\% increase in bilateral trade reduces price differences by 9\%. This finding is completely driven by the Eastern and Central EU. Since the relationship between the price differentials and trade can go in either direction, an instrument is required to estimate a causal relationship. Instrumental-variables strategy shows that the effect of trade on price differentials for the Eastern and Central EU is even larger, at 13\%, yet insignificant for the remaining EU members.
