Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my dissertation, I propose a general research framework of MAD---Monitoring, Analyzing, and Data Informed Decision-making---for financial decision-making. I present three essays which concentrate on two consequential aspects of decision-making for financial risk management. The first two essays focus on better monitoring and analyzing the risk, and the last one focuses on better data-informed decision-making based on the observation and analysis. In the first essay, I study the modeling of joint mortality for the practice of life insurance and annuity pricing. Specifically, I develop a new mathematical model to describe the joint mortality for coupled dependent lives. This model can be used to guide the risk management strategy and the pricing policy for insurance and annuity products. It is shown that it improves the current methods for modeling financial decision-making related to dependent life structures (such as joint life insurance, last survivor annuities, and defined benefit plans for married couples). In the second essay, I study the prediction of Bitcoin price movement and the relevant implications for business analytics. I exploit Bitcoin transaction networks and link network characteristics with the Bitcoin market exchange price. Based on this linkage and the data record, I construct predictive models for Bitcoin price movement. With the innovative use of Bitcoin transaction network data, the predictive models lead to more accurate results which outperform existing models. This methodological innovation also presents new managerial insights from network perspectives. In the third essay, I focus on data-driven decision-making in contexts of the allocation of disaster relief funds. Specifically, I tackle methodological challenges in disaster management when data are extremely sparse and insufficient in the beginning of the disaster evolution, and slowly become more available and reliable as time unfolds. Here I propose an iterative learning method within the general MAD framework to estimate disaster damage losses using very limited and slowly obtained data. Results show that this iterative learning method leads to highly accurate results with fast convergence of the estimation error to a very low level. The framework and results of this essay can be further used for disaster management and resource allocation in various scenarios

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume in a three-volume exposition of Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics" explores a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. This is the first volume in a three-volume exposition of Martin Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics"--a term he coined in 1959 to describe the theoretical underpinnings needed for the construction of an economic dynamics. The goal is to develop a process-oriented theory of money and financial institutions that reconciles micro- and macroeconomics, using as a prime tool the theory of games in strategic and extensive form. The approach involves a search for minimal financial institutions that appear as a logical, technological, and institutional necessity, as part of the "rules of the game." Money and financial institutions are assumed to be the basic elements of the network that transmits the sociopolitical imperatives to the economy. Volume 1 deals with a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. Volume 2 explores the new economic features that arise when we consider multi-period finite and infinite horizon economies. Volume 3 will consider the specific role of financial institutions and government, and formulate the economic financial control problem linking micro- and macroeconomics.

This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within three individual essays, this thesis deals with collaborative and confrontational approaches by NPOs towards companies, and the role these play with respect to corporate responsibility. By drawing on social movement theory, nonprofit-business collaboration literature as well as legitimacy theory, it advances our knowledge regarding two topics: First, this thesis provides answers to the question how successful collaborative and confrontational approaches are individually at influencing households' judgements of companies and of NPOs themselves. Second, it extends our knowledge of interactions between these approaches. With respect to individual effects, this thesis demonstrates that both collaborative and confrontational approaches by NPOs exert a significant effect on households' legitimacy evaluations of companies and subsequently their consumption intentions. Legitimacy also appears as important underlying factor influencing households' support for NPOs, with collaborative NPOs enjoying higher legitimacy and thus support from households than confrontational ones. Concerning interactions between these two types of approaches, this thesis finds confirmation for previous suggestions that contrasting NPO approaches interplay - but demonstrates that such interactions clearly present a double-edged sword. By simultaneously focusing their approach on the same company, both types of NPO suffer a loss in their ability to influence households' perceptions of companies in the way they envision as well as their capability of attaining resources. However, if such approaches are applied sequentially, the picture of these interaction-effects become more positive. These results indicate that NPOs with different approaches towards companies are well advised to work together in a strategic manner in order to maximize their success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many family businesses refrain from using management consultants to support their strategic decision making. But why do some of them use consultants? And what are the reasons not to use management consultants? This book highlights under which conditions consultants are seen to be helpful and when they are rejected. It researches the use of management consultants in family businesses from different perspectives of organizational boundary research. Family businesses vary from each other. Family generation of owner & management, family influence, goal divergence among owners, and complexity are important dimensions that distinguish family businesses in their use of management consultants. This book helps family business managers and owners to understand when the use of management consultants is beneficial to them and when they should refrain from using consultants. Furthermore, it supports management consultants in tailoring their support to specific family business situations. This research is based on an innovative paper-based conjoint experiment with top managers of large German family businesses analyzing more than 1,700 decisions to use management consultants.

This book was released on 2009-02-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Fishburn has had a splendidly productive career that led to path-breaking c- tributions in a remarkable variety of areas of research. His contributions have been published in a vast literature, ranging through journals of social choice and welfare, decision theory, operations research, economic theory, political science, mathema- cal psychology, and discrete mathematics. This work was done both on an individual basis and with a very long list of coauthors. The contributions that Fishburn made can roughly be divided into three major topical areas, and contributions to each of these areas are identi?ed by sections of this monograph. Section 1 deals with topics that are included in the general areas of utility, preference, individual choice, subjective probability, and measurement t- ory. Section 2 covers social choice theory, voting models, and social welfare. S- tion 3 deals with more purely mathematical topics that are related to combinatorics, graph theory, and ordered sets. The common theme of Fishburn’s contributions to all of these areas is his ability to bring rigorous mathematical analysis to bear on a wide range of dif?cult problems.
