Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation of Liquid-Solid Circulating Fluidized Beds by : Abbas Dadashi
Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Liquid-Solid Circulating Fluidized Beds written by Abbas Dadashi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed (LSCFB) reactors are obtaining extensive attraction in the extraction process of functional proteins from industrial broth. A typical LSCFB is comprised of a riser, a downcomer, a liquid-solid separator, a top solids-return pipe and a bottom solids-return pipe. In light of the literature review conducted in this research, a detailed modeling of the protein extraction using an LSCFB ion-exchange system requires a microscopic study including hydrodynamic field, mass transfer and kinetics reactions. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to simulate the hydrodynamics of the two phase flow in an LSCFB riser. The model is based on Eulerian-Eulerian (E-E) approach incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow. The predicted flow characteristics agree well with our earlier experimental data. Furthermore, the model can predict the residence time of both liquid and solid phases in the riser using a pulse technique. A numerical model was developed to predict the protein extraction process using an LSCFB ion exchange system. The model for the riser is an extension of the previous CFD hydrodynamic model for the riser incorporating the kinetics reaction. The model for the downcomer includes a one-dimensional mathematical model using the adsorption kinetics correlations. The numerical predictions were compared favorably with the experimental data from a lab-scale system. The model was used to investigate the effects of operating condition on the protein production rate and the system efficiency. For further study on the hydrodynamics in the downcomer of an LSCFB, the CFD technique was used to simulate the counter-current two phase flow in the downcomer. The model is based on E-E approach incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow. The predicted results agree well with our earlier experimental data. Furthermore, it is shown that the bed expansion of the particles in the downcomer is directly affected by the superficial liquid velocity in downcomer and solids circulation rate. As results, it is demonstrated that the developed CFD model can be adapted to simulate and control the other applications of the LSCFB, such as wastewater treatment, petroleum and metallurgical industries.

Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation of the Hydrodynamic Behavior of a Gas-solid Fluidized Bed with and Without an Electric Field by : Forhad Md Hossain

This book was released on 1998 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation is to numerically predict the effect of an electric field on a two-dimensional gas-solid fluidized bed. The particles in the bed are taken to be of a uniform size and density forming the particulate phase with a gas (air) taken as the continuum phase. A hydrodynamic model of fluidization utilizes the principles of conservation of mass and momentum describing the multiphase flow equations along with the constitutive equations of gas-solid drag and solids stress. A two-dimensional unsteady-state computer code (K-Fix) was used to observe the effect of an electric field on the gas and solid velocities and the void fraction and pressure in the bed. Special case studies included that of a jet, a bubble, and two bubbles, with and without an electric field.
Book Synopsis MFIX Simulation of NETL/PSRI Challenge Problem of Circulating Fluidized Bed by :
Download or read book MFIX Simulation of NETL/PSRI Challenge Problem of Circulating Fluidized Bed written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, numerical simulations of NETL/PSRI challenge problem of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) using the open-source code Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchange (MFIX) are reported. Two rounds of simulation results are reported including the first-round blind test and the second-round modeling refinement. Three-dimensional high fidelity simulations are conducted to model a 12-inch diameter pilot-scale CFB riser. Detailed comparisons between numerical results and experimental data are made with respect to axial pressure gradient profile, radial profiles of solids velocity and solids mass flux along different radial directions at various elevations for operating conditions covering different fluidization regimes. Overall, the numerical results show that CFD can predict the complex gas-solids flow behavior in the CFB riser reasonably well. In addition, lessons learnt from modeling this challenge problem are presented.

Book Synopsis Numerical Investigation of the Gas/spray Jet Interaction with Fluidized Beds by :
Download or read book Numerical Investigation of the Gas/spray Jet Interaction with Fluidized Beds written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many industrial fluidized bed reactors, for example fluid catalytic cracking units, coaters and fluid cokers, the reactant feed is introduced into the system in the form of a gas jet or spray for different purposes. A good understanding of the interaction between the feed injection and the bed can lead to improved reactor design and operation. Despite the fact that numerical models and simulations have been used extensively to investigate fluidization processes, still little is known about the interactions of the jet/spray with fluidized beds. In this thesis, gas jets and liquid spray in several gas-solid systems are numerically studied. The Eulerian-Eulerian multi-fluid model with appropriate closure correlations is employed, and two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed accordingly. The numerical simulations can be divided into two groups: two-phase (gas-solid) and three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) simulations. First, a three-dimensional numerical simulation of a single gas jet injection in a cylindrical bubbling fluidized bed is performed and is compared favorably to available experimental data and empirical correlations. After that, the injection of multiple gas jets into a small bubbling fluidized bed is numerically investigated. The influence of the secondary gas injection on the flow hydrodynamics, as well as interactions between the gas jet and the surrounding gas, solids, bubbles, and other jets is studied numerically, and the mixing of the secondary gas with the bed materials is also analyzed. To study the liquid spray in gas-solid systems, several three-phase systems of the low-flow-rate bottom spray into a flat-based spouted bed with a draft tube (DTSB), an evaporating gas-liquid spray into a uniform gas-solid crossflow, and an evaporative water spray into a hot riser are simulated, respectively. Appropriate models are chosen to describe the interactions between spray droplets and particles, as well as the inter-phase heat and mass t.

Book Synopsis A New Model for Two-dimensional Numerical Simulation of Pseudo-2D Gas-solids Fluidized Beds by :
Download or read book A New Model for Two-dimensional Numerical Simulation of Pseudo-2D Gas-solids Fluidized Beds written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudo-two dimensional (pseudo-2D) fluidized beds, for which the thickness of the system is much smaller than the other two dimensions, is widely used to perform fundamental studies on bubble behavior, solids mixing, or clustering phenomenon in different gas-solids fluidization systems. The abundant data from such experimental systems are very useful for numerical model development and validation. However, it has been reported that two-dimensional (2D) computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of pseudo-2D gas-solids fluidized beds usually predict poor quantitative agreement with the experimental data, especially for the solids velocity field. In this paper, a new model is proposed to improve the 2D numerical simulations of pseudo-2D gas-solids fluidized beds by properly accounting for the frictional effect of the front and back walls. Two previously reported pseudo-2D experimental systems were simulated with this model. Compared to the traditional 2D simulations, significant improvements in the numerical predictions have been observed and the predicted results are in better agreement with the available experimental data.
