Book excerpt: The contribution of a cement-stabilized base course to the strength of the rigid pavement structure is poorly understood. The objective of this research was to obtain data on the response of the ng'id pavement slab-joint-foundation system by conducting laboratory-scale experiments on jointed rigid pavement models and to develop a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the rigid pavement slabjoint4oundation system that can be implemented in the advanced pavement design concepts currently under development by the Federal Aviation Administration. Evidence from experiments conducted on six laboratory-scale jointed rigid pavement models suggests that the joint efficiency depends upon the presence and condition of a stabilized base. The presence of cracking in the base and the degree of bonding between the slabs and the stabilized base course influence the structural capacity and load transfer capability of the rigid pavement structure. The finite element model developed in this research indicates that a comprehensive 3D finite element modeling technique provides a rational approach to modeling the structural response of the jointed rigid airport pavement system. Modeling features which are required include explicit 3D modeling of the slab continua, load transfer capability at the joint (modeled springs between the slabs), explicit 3D modeling of the base course continua, aggregate interlock capability across the cracks in the base course (again, modeled by springs across the crack), and contact interaction between the slabs and base course. The contact interaction model feature must allow gaps to open between the slab and base. Furthermore, where the slabs and base are in contact, transfer of shear stresses across the interface via friction should be modeled.

Linear and quadratic versions of hexahedral elements and quadrilateral axisymmetrix elements are provided. Dynamic problems are solved by explicit, implicit, or combined explicit-implicit integration methods. Results from the program are shown to compare favorably with data from the Ohio test road"--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of an international conference held at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for materials Science and Technology) in Dübendorf, Switzerland, in July 2020. The conference series was established by the International Society of Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructure (iSMARTi) for promoting and discussing state-of-the-art design, maintenance, rehabilitation and management of pavements. The inaugural conference was held at Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2000. The series has steadily grown over the past 20 years, with installments hosted in various countries all over the world. The respective contributions share the latest insights from research and practice in the maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements, and discuss advanced materials, technologies and solutions for achieving an even more sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

Book excerpt: This volume highlights the latest advances, innovations, and applications in bituminous materials and structures and asphalt pavement technology, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials (ISBM), held in Lyon, France on December 14-16, 2020. The symposium represents a joint effort of three RILEM Technical Committees from Cluster F: 264-RAP “Asphalt Pavement Recycling”, 272-PIM “Phase and Interphase Behaviour of Bituminous Materials”, and 278-CHA “Crack-Healing of Asphalt Pavement Materials”. It covers a diverse range of topics concerning bituminous materials (bitumen, mastics, mixtures) and road, railway and airport pavement structures, including: recycling, phase and interphase behaviour, cracking and healing, modification and innovative materials, durability and environmental aspects, testing and modelling, multi-scale properties, surface characteristics, structure performance, modelling and design, non-destructive testing, back-analysis, and Life Cycle Assessment. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, present a wealth of exciting ideas that will open novel research directions and foster new multidisciplinary collaborations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "FEDFAA, Finite Element Design-Federal Aviation Administration, is a computer program for both airport rigid and flexible pavement thickness design. NIKE3D (a general-purpose, three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM) computer program) is the selected engine for critical stress calculation for airport rigid pavement design. The calculated edge stresses are used in the FEDFAA failure model to determine the slab thickness. Since FEDFAA is a tool for thickness design rather than for analysis, certain program modifications and selection of available elements in NIKE3D have been made during FEDFAA development; it includes (1) selection of the nonconforming eight-node solid element to model all layers of the pavement except the subgrade, (2) introduction of the infinite element to model the infinitely deep subgrade, (3) mesh densities in vertical and horizontal directions, and (4) slab size and width of subbase extension have been determined to fit the needs of the design. A procedure has also been developed to calculate the critical stress of the pavement from the stresses calculated by NIKE3D at the element Gaussian points. Finally, the modified 3D finite element-based program was evaluated by using three criteria: (1) the model must be theoretically correct; (2) the final stress calculation engine with modifications and simplifications provides critical stress close enough to the precise one; and (3) it should be able to complete this computation under aircraft load within a few minutes. This report provides detailed descriptions for model selections, program modifications, and numerical evaluations. The report concludes that the final tool satisfies all three criteria; therefore, it is a reliable and applicable tool for airport rigid pavement design."--P. [ii].

Since reliable quantitative results are requested, image analysis requires highly sophisticated numerical and analytical methods—particularly for applications in medicine, security, and remote sensing, where the results of the processing may consist of vitally important data. The contributions to this book provide a good overview of the most important demands and solutions concerning this research area. In particular, the reader will find image analysis applied for feature extraction, encryption and decryption of data, color segmentation, and in the support new technologies. In all the contributions, entropy plays a pivotal role.
