Book excerpt: Electron microscope tomography (EMT) has emerged as the leading technique for three-dimensional (3D) structural analysis of unique complex biological specimens. This book reviews the different computational stages involved in EMT, from image acquisition to interpretation of the 3D reconstruction. The high performance computing (HPC) techniques normally used to cope with the computational demands are also described. Moreover, combining the holographic methods with the methods for digital image processing has made it possible to develop the digital holographic interference microscope (DHIM) for real-time 3D imaging of phase microscopic objects and measurement of their morphological parameters. In this book, the classical and holographic methods of phase microobject visualisation are considered. In addition, 3D imaging has become commonplace in the medical field, with its routine use in the better established institutions for pre-natal observations, diagnosis of ailments, work-up prior to surgery, recovery monitoring and many other medical procedures. This book discusses the research methodology required in the reconstruction of 3D volume and employing computer-aided diagnosis to identify various diseases. Details of the different stages of processing, along with the promising results achieved are presented. Also discussed are some considerations for future trends of 3D imaging in the medical field. Other chapters cover detailed derivations of reconstruction algorithms in 2D and modern 3D cone-beam CT (CBCT), evaluate geometric parameters of bone in 3D using CT scans or a new low-radiating device (EOS), and CT based 3D- display providing accurate preoperative visualisation and computerised risk analyses for safety margins of pancreatic- and biliary- tract tumours, as well as for the assessment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly revised textbook provides a practically applicable guide to three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE). Background is provided on the evolution of the technology and physics that support the implementation of both transthoracic and transesophageal approaches to 3DE. The incremental value of 3DE to assess cardiac chambers is also described. Moreover, a range of cardiac valvular diseases including the mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valve have been portrayed and illustrated in depth. These include congenital abnormalities, regurgitation and stenosis. Emphasis is also placed on technical aspects of the technique and where it can provide added value, including post-surgery assessments and evaluation of cardiac masses. Textbook of Three-Dimensional Echocardiography enables readers to develop a deep understanding of how to use this imaging modality. It provides a valuable resource for the echocardiography trainee looking to develop their knowledge and for the experienced practitioner seeking a comprehensive up-to-date reference.

Book excerpt: "This book contains papers first presented at the Second International Workshop on Field-Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL '92), held in Vienna, Austria, in August-September 1992. The growing importance of field-programmable devices, especially of field-programmable gate arrays, is demonstrated by the increased number of papers submitted in 1992. Of the 70 papers submitted, 23 were selected for this book. The first three papers were invited and discuss strategic issues and give surveys. Three papers deal with new FPGA architectures and five papers introduce methods and tools. The last twelve papers report applications focusing on rapid prototyping or new FPGA-based computer architectures. The invited papersare: "Overview of complex array-based PLDs" by G. Biehl; "Technologies and utilization of field programmable gate arrays" by J. Isoaho, A. Nummela, andH. Tenhunen; and "Some considerations on field-programmable gate arrays and their impact on system design" by A. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE.
