Book excerpt: Like other towns in coastal Maine, Freeport was settled in the 18th century by residents of the southern part of the state--Massachusetts, which it was a part of until 1820. The Harraseeket River provided mill power and transportation, enabling growth and separation from North Yarmouth in 1789. The arrival of the railroad in 1849 led to a late-century economic boom fueled by entrepreneur E.B. Mallet. Piggybacking on the established industrial infrastructure, L.L. Bean and other retailers prospered in the next century, forming the core of activity at the heart of Freeport Village today. South Freeport was sustained by shipbuilding that ebbed and flowed through the 20th century, and largely because of that industry, it remains a historic village to this day. Because of Freeport's rapid growth and a number of downtown fires, historic buildings have been lost, moved, or altered over time, though the historical society has advocated for preservation and maintains a broad collection of photographs that visually record these changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have always been two Freeports: the image presented to outsiders, and the vital, quirky life enjoyed by residents of this small town in Maine. Once part of ancient North Yarmouth, Freeport was “set off” and incorporated in 1789, making it the sixty-fourth town in what would become Maine in 1820. Photographs have chronicled Freeport's daily life, her changing images, and the milestones of transportation which have pushed her forward. From E.B. Mallet's manufacturing and retail empire to that of L.L. Bean, from South Freeport's shipbuilding and canning industries to the arrival of the summer visitors, there are vivid images which capture both the public and private lives of historic Freeport, and there are photographs of great beauty which chronicle the special character of beloved landscapes.

New England was hard hit by the War of 1812 with Great Britain. The war severely injured the maritime and commercial economy and inflamed the difference in interests between the Northeast and the rest of the country, where agriculture was the mainstay. The author has combed sources near and far, bringing to life a drama that was international in scope ? but so local in impact.a"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are ethnic groups? Are Deaf people who sign American Sign Language (ASL) an ethnic group? In The People of the Eye, Deaf studies, history, cultural anthropology, genetics, sociology, and disability studies are brought to bear as the authors compare the values, customs, and social organization of the Deaf World to those in ethnic groups. Arguing against the common representation of ASL signers as a disability group, the authors discuss the many challenges to Deaf ethnicity in this first book-length examination of these issues. Stepping deeper into the debate around ethnicity status, The People of the Eye also describes, in a compelling narrative, the story of the founding families of the Deaf World in the US. Tracing ancestry back hundreds of years, the authors reveal that Deaf people's preference to marry other Deaf people led to the creation of Deaf clans, and thus to shared ancestry and the discovery that most ASL signers are born into the Deaf World, and many are kin. In a major contribution to the historical record of Deaf people in the US, The People of the Eye portrays how Deaf people- and hearing people, too- lived in early America. For those curious about their own ancestry in relation to the Deaf World, the figures and an associated website present pedigrees for over two hundred lineages that extend as many as three hundred years and are unique in genealogy research. The book contains an every-name index to the pedigrees, providing a rich resource for anyone who is interested in Deaf culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maine has a rich supernatural history and ghost stories from the state are as varied as they are prolific. Freelance writer and reporter Tom Verde first became interested in such eerie occurrences while researching first-hand encounters with ghosts for a series of public radio programs. This book recounts some of the spine-tingling tales he uncovered in his research, including: •The dagger-wielding shade who terrorized a Portland couple •The murdered Indian who revisited Means’s Tavern •Famed diva Lillian Nordica, whose voice still echoes through the Farmington auditorium named in her honor •The hostile spirit who tried to frighten the tenants out of an Orrington house •Even an entire phantom ship, bound eternally for Freeport These are not fictitious creations of literary imagination. People from all walks of life—including many who were positive they would never believe in ghosts—attest to these encounters.
