Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three-Body Recombination of Oxygen Atoms Two atoms can recombine to form a molecule in the presence of some third body such as an atom or molecule (or even a wall, but we shall not consider this case), or else radiatively. In practice, three-body non radiative recombination is an important and interesting process which has considerable practical importance in the ionosphere, in shock wave relaxation, and in combustion; in fact three-body recombination is the prototype of an important class of chemical reactions. Book excerpt: The three-body heterogeneous and wall recombination coefficients for atomic oxygen were measured using an electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer to monitor the time dependence of the atomic oxygen concentration. This measurement was made for a pressure range of from .224 to 1.10 torr using pyrolysis of ozone as a source of oxygen atoms. The three-body heterogeneous rate constant, k1, with molecular oxygen as the third body was determined independent of ozone concentration to be (5.43 ± . 08) x 10-34 cc 2 molecule-2 sec-1 The wall recombination efficiency, y, for a fused metaphosphoric acid-sodium metaphosphate mixture, the wall coating, was found to be 9.1 x 10-6. The recombination coefficient, k1, resulting from a computer fit of the data to the usual recombination model is compared to literature values obtained from discharged oxygen, ozone pyrolysis, and chemiluminescence measurements. The role that ozone concentration plays throughout the atomic oxygen decay and the possible effects of its neglect is discussed.

Book Synopsis A Technique for Solving the General Reaction-rate Equations in the Atmosphere by : T. J. Keneshea
Download or read book A Technique for Solving the General Reaction-rate Equations in the Atmosphere written by T. J. Keneshea and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the availability of numerical techniques for solving an extensive set of nonlinear differential equations and high-speed computers for performing the calculations, interest in solving the unrestricted reaction-rate equations is growing among ionospheric researchers. In view of this a refinement is given of the techniques previously developed in PB-163 071 and AD-424 173. The computer code is written to solve the photochemical behavior of 15 atmospheric species; these species are electrons, O( - ), O2( - ), O3( - ), NO2( - ), O(+), O2(+), N2(+), NO(+), NO, N, NO2, O3, N2O, and O. Built into the code are 168 reactions that can conceivably take place among these constituents. Several examples of the results obtained using the code are presented, including the buildup of ionization from zero concentrations at altitudes in the D and E regions and the deionization of an atmosphere with high initial electron densities. The diurnal variation of the atmospheric constituents is also presented along with profiles for the above-mentioned species from 60 km to 120 km. The computer codes are included in their entirety with complete explanations on their usage. (Author).

Download or read book Electron-Ion-Atom Tree-Body Recombination written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate for the three-body recombination of an electron and an oxygen atomic ion, with a nitrogen atom acting as third body that takes up the excess energy, was calculated by the quantum mechanical distorted wave method. The calculation was performed numerioally on IBM 7090 computers for electron and heavy particle energies below 1 ev, and for the electron captured into states characterized by principal quantum numbers n = 6, 10. The results for the recombination coefficient summed over all possible orbital quantum numbers of the bound electron are 10-28cm6/sec for n = 6 and 10-26 cm6/sec for n = 10. (auth).

Download or read book O-atom Yields from Microwave Discharges in N2O/Ar Mixtures written by L. G. Piper and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have studied the products of Ar/N20 microwave discharges to determine their fitness as sources of atomic oxygen in discharge-flow reactors. For N20 feed rates below 10-20 micromol s−1, the discharge converts about 75 percent of the N20 to atomic oxygen, and in addition, produces small quantities of atomic nitrogen, generally less than 10 percent of the 0-atom product. At higher N20 feed rates the 0-atom production efficiency decreases, and some nitric oxide accompanies the 0-atoms out of the discharge.
