While departing the first ball of the Season, dowager countess Persephone discovers there’s an intruder in her coach. She’s momentarily shocked, until she realizes she knows the man. They had briefly been lovers years ago. But how did he end up in her coach, apparently three sheets to the wind? Jack, Earl of Wilmington, is sure he was drugged during the ball, for what else could explain his splitting headache and loss of memory? But who put him in Lady Castlewait's coach? And why? Persephone’s driver Parker is just as bewildered, and he’s determined to discover what he can. While Penelope and Jack renew their acquaintance, Parker returns to the scene of an abduction gone awry. Jack’s fate depends on it in The Abduction of an Earl.

It is action packed with twists and turns... difficult to put down.”—Aldine Crick, Goodreads Reviewer Will love deliver them from evil, or will secrets seal their doom? Her father’s mad will sends Elizabeth far away from a sheltered life in the English countryside to her aunt and uncle's vineyard in Venetia, and into a household of neglect and apparent lunacy. The Viscount Canterbourne rescues Elizabeth from ruffians, and his mysterious story captivates her imagination even as his heroics and kindness captivate her heart. But when she encounters the nightmarish Lord Orefados and realizes the mage has imprisoned a friend in the remains of an ancient abbey, Elizabeth hurtles into a maelstrom of peril and dark sorcery. Lord Canterbourne is full of pain and questions at the loss of his estranged father. He hopes the testamentary letter will explain all. Instead it sends him on a fool’s errand to deliver a box (which he must never open) to a man he has only ever seen once: shadowy, eccentric Lord Orefados. With Elizabeth he shares an instant connection. Who else can understand his heart but a woman who has also been at the whim of parental madness, a woman who also bears the stigma of a paternal oddity? When he discovers his dark family history and a secret wrong against Elizabeth’s parents, however, Canterbourne fears he can never tell her the truth. Yet if he doesn’t, he could lose her to the ensorcellments of Orefados, whose obsession with an outlandish ritual is reaching a fever pitch. Can seduction break the spell? Book excerpt: "Regency Romance with a modern sensibility Unique and totally relatable heroines, irresistible love interests, and a cast of family, friends and villains that thoroughly captivates. I adore Tessa Candle's books." –Ev Bishop, USA Today bestselling author. He is back from the grave and hiding someone in a cave. Why would the duke's daughter trust such a knave? As if returning from the dead were not taxing enough, Delville, the missing rogue heir to the Duchy of Pallensley, discovers that he is still most inopportunely engaged to a silk-sashed demoness. If he resurfaces to become a duke, she will expect her presumed dead fiancé to make good on the betrothal, and Delville would rather poke out his own eye. But he has another reason for not letting his true identity slip: he is a spy trying to discreetly rescue an abducted child from a dangerous criminal. Things would be a lot less complicated if Lady Eleanor stopped popping up wherever she had the least business being. It is almost as though she is following him—which she probably is. He does have that effect on women. Mistaking her for a lady of the evening and kissing her does not appear to have helped matters. Yet he can hardly be blamed. It was rather dark in that cellar, after all. Eleanor, scathingly sarcastic daughter to the Duke of Grendleridge, has a problem, and his name is Lord Auchdun. The insinuating pest follows her everywhere and cannot seem to comprehend her refusing his offer of marriage, by which he means to remove the taint of her mother’s scandalous past. Eleanor would sooner die an old maid than marry such a moralizing bacon-brain. But evading Auchdun keeps throwing her into the company of a mysterious man who looks like a labourer, but sounds like a gentlemen—though he certainly does not act like one. When she discovers he is hiding a prisoner on her friend’s property, Eleanor has a choice: tell the Marquess of Fenimore of this skullduggery, or assist an insufferably presumptuous and probably dangerous rake in his crimes. And the kiss is of no consideration at all in the matter. Not in the least. Two Brides and a Duke is a full length Steamy Regency Romance novel and Book 4 in the Parvenues & Paramours series. Book excerpt: Swedish medieval marriage formation was a process, written down in the secular laws. However, it started to evolve because of the interaction with the medieval Catholic marriage doctrine, which focused on mutual words of consent. Although first the canon law of marriage, and then Lutheran marriage dogma influenced the Swedish development, the perception of marriage as a process, consisting of several legal acts and accompanied by property transfers, proved remarkably resilient. The pragmatic and rural character of Sweden contributed to this, despite pressure from canon and Roman law and attempts at bringing marriage formation under ecclesiastical control. Marrying by stages was in itself unremarkable in Europe, but the legal foundation and formality make medieval and sixteenth-century Sweden a unique case study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tactic of kidnapping enemy leaders, used in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, dates to the American Revolution. George Washington called such efforts "honorable" and supported attempts to kidnap the British commander-in-chief (twice), Benedict Arnold (after he turned traitor) and Prince William Henry (a future king of Great Britain). Washington in turn was targeted at his Morristown winter headquarters by British dragoons who crossed the frozen Hudson River. New Jersey Governor William Livingston performed a patriotic service by going to considerable lengths to avoid being abducted by the Loyalist raider James Moody. Sometimes these operations succeeded, as with the spectacular captures of Major General Charles Lee, Major General Richard Prescott, Brigadier General Gold Selleck Silliman, and North Carolina's governor Thomas Burke. Sometimes they barely failed, as with the violent attempt by British secret service operatives against Major General Philip Schuyler and the mission by British dragoons against Thomas Jefferson. Some of the abducted, such as signer of the Declaration of Independence Richard Stockton and Delaware's governor John McKinly, suffered damage to their reputations. The kidnapper risked all--if caught, he could be hanged. This book covers more than thirty major attempted and successful abductions of military and civilian leaders from 1775 to 1783, from Maine to Georgia, and including two in Great Britain.

Book excerpt: Edward III (1312-1377) was the most successful European ruler of his age. Reigning for over fifty years, he achieved spectacular military triumphs and overcame grave threats to his authority, from parliamentary revolt to the Black Death. Revered by his subjects as a chivalric dynamo, he initiated the Hundred Years' War and gloriously led his men into battle against the Scots and the French. In this illuminating biography, W. Mark Ormrod takes a deeper look at Edward to reveal the man beneath the military muscle. What emerges is Edward's clear sense of his duty to rebuild the prestige of the Crown, and through military gains and shifting diplomacy, to secure a legacy for posterity. New details of the splendor of Edward's court, lavish national celebrations, and innovative use of imagery establish the king's instinctive understanding of the bond between ruler and people. With fresh emphasis on how Edward's rule was affected by his family relationships--including his roles as traumatized son, loving husband, and dutiful father--Ormrod gives a valuable new dimension to our understanding of this remarkable warrior king.

Book excerpt: The incredible true story of how a cycle of rain, cold, disease, and warfare created the worst famine in European history—years before the Black Death, from the author of Justinian's Flea and the forthcoming Miracle Cure In May 1315, it started to rain. For the seven disastrous years that followed, Europeans would be visited by a series of curses unseen since the third book of Exodus: floods, ice, failures of crops and cattle, and epidemics not just of disease, but of pike, sword, and spear. All told, six million lives—one-eighth of Europe’s total population—would be lost. With a category-defying knowledge of science and history, William Rosen tells the stunning story of the oft-overlooked Great Famine with wit and drama and demonstrates what it all means for today’s discussions of climate change.

The Clares spearheaded the struggle to enforce Magna Carta in the Barons' War. Historians prior to Altschul tended to neglect the Clares' history given the scattered nature of the archives documenting their time as a politically influential and powerful family. This book unfolds chronologically, outlining the Clares' rise to preeminence and describing how they administered their estates and income.

Book excerpt: "I was captivated by the beautiful covers from the start and that captivation just carried straight through from page one to the end of each book." ~Jeannette R Holtham A Breathtaking Medieval Saga of Love, Duty, Loyalty, Failure and Triumph in the First Three Volumes of The Knights of England by Mary Ellen Johnson BOOK 1: The Lion and the Leopard - Maria Rendell wants to be a dutiful wife to husband Phillip, but can't deny her attraction to their liege lord, Richard of Sussex. Loving Philip should be easy. She has married the knight of whom minstrels sing; the knight who saved Richard's life. But when Phillip abandons Maria to indulge his wanderlust, she turns to Richard, sparking a passionate affair amidst the crumbling kingdom of Edward II. Meanwhile, Edward II's barons are rebelling, executing his favorites, and across the channel in France, Isabella, Edward II's wife—the She-Wolf of France—plans to invade England. Then King Edward is captured as Richard and Maria prepare to flee to safety, and Phillip returns. Now the day of reckoning is at hand—not only for Maria, Richard, and Phillip, but for that most unfortunate of Plantagenet kings, Edward II. BOOK 2: A Knight There Was - Following his return from battle with a life-threatening sickness, Margery Watson nurses Golden Knight Matthew Hart back to health. A bond deepening between them, Matthew--who refuses to marry so his younger brother may inherit all--begs Margery to openly live with him. Margery agrees. Like her grandmother before her, she will risk all for love. But a scheming adversary concocts a deception in Matthew's absence that leaves Margery the unwitting wife of a wealthy goldsmith--who seeks only to trade on her family name--while believing she was betrayed by Matthew. When Matthew returns from London to find Margery wedded and bedded, he accuses her of betraying HIM. Now, both Margery and Matthew foolishly believe that time, distance and heartbreak will be enough to keep them forever apart. BOOK 3: Within A Forest Dark - With his belief in the Perfection of Knighthood challenged by battlefield atrocities, Matthew Hart returns to London, wishing to reunite with his first love, Margery Watson. Margery's cruel husband is now dead. As a wealthy widow, she has no intention of returning to the bonds of marriage. But she cannot turn away her handsome knight, no matter the depth of innocent blood he spilled in the name of honor and duty. As Matthew forces himself to fulfill feudal obligations, and Margery's unrest turns treasonous, the forces of king and kingdom may prove the lovers' ultimate undoing or their best hope. Publisher Note: Readers with a passion for history will appreciate the author's penchant for detail and accuracy.
