Book Synopsis Why Human Security Matters by : Dennis Altman
Download or read book Why Human Security Matters written by Dennis Altman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea level rises pose a greater long term threat to Australia's coastline and major capital cities than a military attack by a foreign power. Citizens are more likely to experience a pandemic virus than a nuclear threat. Food shortages have already occurred as a result of flood or drought, and the tentacles of international trade in drugs, money laundering and human trafficking already reach far into Australian communities. Why Human Security Matters argues that Australian external relations needs to treat the 'soft' issues of security as seriously as it treats the 'hard' realities of military defence, but also the many complex situations in-between, whether it be civil war, political upheaval, terrorism or piracy. Australia needs to do this first and foremost in our region, but also in relation to the unresolved regional and global security issues as we confront an increasingly uncertain and turbulent world. With contributions from leading thinkers in foreign policy and strategic studies, Why Human Security Matters is essential reading for anyone seeking a thoughtful and thought-provoking analysis of Australia's place in an age of transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates on security became more intense following the unanticipated end of the Cold War conflict and took on added force after the terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2001. Generally viewed as a part of the wider 'West' despite its separation by enormous geographical distances from both Europe and the United States, Australia is a regional power in its own right. It has been an active and loyal member of the US-led coalitions of the willing, first in Afghanistan and then in Iraq. The terrorist attacks in Bali one year after the attacks in the United States brought home to Australia the direct nature of the new global terrorist threats to its own security. This volume brings together leading experts on international security and Australia's foreign and security policies in a critical examination of Australia's adaptations to the new security challenges. It is the first in-depth and comprehensive analysis of Australia's defence and security policies as well as the country's role in countering regional and global challenges to international security since the war on terrorism began.
Book Synopsis The Future of the United States-Australia Alliance by : Scott D. McDonald
Download or read book The Future of the United States-Australia Alliance written by Scott D. McDonald and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States-Australia alliance has been an important component of the US-led system of alliances that has underpinned regional security in the Indo-Pacific since 1945. However, recent geostrategic developments, in particular the rise of the People’s Republic of China, have posed significant challenges to this US-led regional order. In turn, the growing strategic competition between these two great powers has generated challenges to the longstanding US-Australia alliance. Both the US and Australia are confronting a changing strategic environment, and, as a result, the alliance needs to respond to the challenges that they face. The US needs to understand the challenges and risks to this vital relationship, which is growing in importance, and take steps to manage it. On its part, Australia must clearly identify its core common interests with the US and start exploring what more it needs to do to attain its stated policy preferences. This book consists of chapters exploring US and Australian perspectives of the Indo-Pacific, the evolution of Australia-US strategic and defence cooperation, and the future of the relationship. Written by a joint US-Australia team, the volume is aimed at academics, analysts, students, and the security and business communities.

Book excerpt: Elected governments pose the greatest threat to Australians' security. Political leaders increasingly promote secrecy, ignorance and fear to introduce new laws that undermine individual liberties and magnify the risks of being dragged into a horrific new war for no good reason. It is a criminal offence to receive or publish a wide range of information unrelated to national security. Our defence weapons are so dependent on US technical support that Australia couldn't defend itself without US involvement. The Commonwealth is amassing comprehensive databases on citizens' digital fingerprints and facial recognition characteristics. True? False? Read Secret: The Making of Australia's Security State and you decide. Fresh archival material and revealing details of conversations between former CIA, US State Department and Australian officials will make you reconsider the world around you.

Download or read book Australias Intelligence Community in the face of new threats written by Robert Fiedler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Region: Australien, Neuseeland, Note: 1,9, Macquarie University, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: During the cold war Australian intelligence agencies did what intelligence agencies where expected to do, gathering information and knowledge on a defined enemy represented by states or military alliances such as the Warsaw Pact. In a post-cold war era, these conventional threats still exist, however they are overlaid by other security threats such as regional instability, the rise of international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, transnational crime and non-human agency threats such as climate change. The problem with this new security agenda is the asymmetry of these new threats since the nation state Australia has to cope with groups, networks, non-state actors, or even individuals, some of them are hard to detect and even harder to combat. Therefore, strategic uncertainty has become one of the defining determinants in a new security environment. The rapid growth of human and financial resources devoted to Australian Intelligence demonstrate the relevance conceded to intelligence, now considered to be the "the most effective tool in the struggle against new security threats" (Ungerer, 2008a, p. 1). Yet, it is necessary to analyze if Australia's intelligence community (AIC) measure up to the high expectations and challenges posed by the new security agenda. This paper will provide an assessment of AIC's efforts to combat asymmetric threats by analyzing the performance of intelligence agencies in the face of selected asymmetric threats. Based on the results of this assessment, steps towards a more effective intelligence answer to non-conventional security threats will be proposed.
