Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Mechanism of Societies The object which at prefent fixes the at tention of all the States in Europe, (all of them either debtors or creditors), is the National Debt of England, and the meafures which will be taken on that fubjeet by the Aflembly the mol't clear-lighted of any in the world to every thing that concerns. The interefi's of the people, the melt jealous of its rights, and the mod free, at leali in its debates. It is by confidering that formidable debt, and its influence on the wealth of the State and the eafe of the People, that the Author dares to begin. But before he proceeds to unfold the mechanifm of the national debt, the refult of which developement prefents fome ideas too oppofite to the received Opinion, he en deavours by degrees to familiarife his Reader's with his own, by fame general reflexions on the pee/eat fitaatim of England thefe reflexions leave him no room to doubt, that England was in 177 9, notwitbfz'ana'z'flg zbe national deaf, richer than fhe was at the beginning of this century 5 richer, either in a fourfold, or in a double pro portion, as the Reader is difpofed to adopt the one or the other rate of population whence it appears that the Author, in refpeet to his plan, does not afiix any importance to the difference of opinions on this article. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanism in Thought and Morals: An Address Delivered Before the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Harvard University, June 29, 1870; With Notes and Afterthoughts IT is fair to claim for this Essay the license which belongs to all spoken addresses. TO hold the attention Of an audience is the first requisite Of every such composition; and for this a more highly colored rhetoric is admissible than might please the solitary reader. The cheek Of a stage heroine will bear a touch Of carmine which would hardly improve the sober comeliness Of the mother of a family at her fireside. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Society It will appear from these addresses that we had no idea of forming either a sect or a political party, nor even a Church in any narrow sense. From the first all those with whom I was associ ated, and myself as leader and guide, treated thef scheme of Comte as an Ideal which the future. Might work out, but of which we could only form a School to influence opinion. Everything we did was open to the public, gratuitous, and informal. We made no terms for adhesion in any degree, no rules or pledges, no attempt at legislative action. We were simply a group of men who aimed at' guiding public opinion - attacking none, never disturbing any genuine faith, not seeking any personal power or privilege. The Lectures I now issue were part of the Courses which I gave fre quently at Newton Hall and elsewhere to several Positivist Societies in various cities. As there was. Nothing in them of exclusive dogma or formal sect, they were delivered or repeated to sundry Ethical or Free Thought Societies in England and in America, at which I had been invited to speak. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Society, Its Origin and Development In studying biology it is convenient to make cross-sections of laboratory specimens in order to determine structure, and to watch plants and animals grow in order to determine function. There seems to be no good reason why social life should not be studied in the same way. To take a child in the home and watch it grow in the midst of the life of the family, the community, and the larger world, and to cut across group life so as to see its characteristics, its interests, and its organization, is to study sociology in the most natural way and to obtain the necessary data for generalization. To attempt to study sociological principles without this preliminary investigation is to confuse the student and leave him in a sea of vague abstractions. It is not because of a lack of appreciation of the abstract that the emphasis of this book is on the concrete. It is written as an introduction to the study of the principles of sociology, and it may well be used as a prelude to the various social sciences. It is natural that trained sociologists should prefer to discuss the profound problems of their science, and should plunge their pupils into material for study where they are soon beyond their depth; much of current life seems so obvious and so simple that it is easy to forget that the college man or woman has never looked upon it with a discriminating eye or with any attempt to understand its meaning. If this is true of the college student, it is unquestionably true of the men and women of the world. The writer believes that there is need of a simple, untechnical treatment of human society, and offers this book as a contribution to the practical side of social science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind and Society, Vol. 1: Trattato Di Sociologia Generale Pareto first expounded the subject matter of these volumes in the form of lectures that were delivered orally and taken down stenographically. Many traces of that origin survive in the body of the printed Italian text. In this translation I eliminate them. Pareto also makes frequent remarks as to the mechanism Of his book or as to his manner of developing his thought. Such comments I regularly throw into footnotes, and in so doing I merely general ize a device that Pareto used to an extent himself. Pareto's original contains a number of repetitions. These too I eliminate, barring exception, inserting cross-references if anything is to be gained by them. In cases where substantial departures from Pareto's text are made, I warn and explain in footnotes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Society The present study, with its wide outlook and its resolute determination to see facts as they are, should have much value for all students of latter-day politics and economics in Europe; for though Rathenau is mainly concerned with conditions in his own land the same conditions affect all countries to a greater or less degree, and he deals with general principles of human psychology and of economic law which prevail everywhere in the world. It is not too much to say that The New Society constitutes a landmark in the history of economic and social thought, and contains matter for discussion, for sifting, for experiment and for propaganda which should occupy serious thinkers and reformers for many a day to come. His suggestions and conclusions may not be all accepted, or all acceptable, but few will deny that they constitute a distinct advance in the effort to bring serious and disinterested thought to the solution of our social problems, and in this conviction we offer the present complete and authorized translation to English readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Society: A Psychological Analysis During the last hundred years the external condi tions of civilised life have been transformed by a series of inventions which have abolished the old limits to the creation of mechanical force, the carriage of men and goods, and communication by written and spoken words. One effect of this transformation is a general change of social scale. Men find themselves working and thinking and feeling in relation to an environment, which, both in its world-wide extension and its inti mate connection with all sides of human existence, is without precedent in the history of the world. Book excerpt: Fans of Douglas Hofstadter, Daniel Bennet, and Richard Dawkins (as well as science buffs and readers of Wired Magazine) will revel in Aaron Lynch’s groundbreaking examination of memetics--the new study of how ideas and beliefs spread. What characterizes a meme is its capacity for displacing rival ideas and beliefs in an evolutionary drama that determines and changes the way people think. Exactly how do ideas spread, and what are the factors that make them genuine thought contagions? Why, for instance, do some beliefs spread throughout society, while others dwindle to extinction? What drives those intensely held beliefs that spawn ideological and political debates such as views on abortion and opinions about sex and sexuality?By drawing on examples from everyday life, Lynch develops a conceptual basis for understanding memetics. Memes evolve by natural selection in a process similar to that of Genes in evolutionary biology. What makes an idea a potent meme is how effectively it out-propagates other ideas. In memetic evolution, the "fittest ideas” are not always the truest or the most helpful, but the ones best at self replication. Thus, crash diets spread not because of lasting benefit, but by alternating episodes of dramatic weight loss and slow regain. Each sudden thinning provokes onlookers to ask, "How did you do it?” thereby manipulating them to experiment with the diet and in turn, spread it again. The faster the pounds return, the more often these people enter that disseminating phase, all of which favors outbreaks of the most pathogenic diets. Like a software virus traveling on the Internet or a flu strain passing through a city, thought contagions proliferate by programming for their own propagation. Lynch argues that certain beliefs spread like viruses and evolve like microbes, as mutant strains vie for more adherents and more hosts. In its most revolutionary aspect, memetics asks not how people accumulate ideas, but how ideas accumulate people. Readers of this intriguing theory will be amazed to discover that many popular beliefs about family, sex, politics, religion, health, and war have succeeded by their "fitness” as thought contagions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Population and Production, as They Are Affected by the Progress of Society: With a View to Moral and Political Consequences I have observed at the very outset that the=prin ciple of population, in its practical operations upon the condition of mankind, may be said to consti tute a new department of science. It is also a very intricate one; conversant with so wide a circle of facts and arguments, and with so many of the most diflicult questions of moral and political. Economy, that to treat it in a popular manner, so as to convey a clear conception of the subject to a general reader, is a matter of no small diffi culty. Yet I have thought that only such a mode of treating it could lead to extensive usefulness. A dry philosophical discussion, inapplicable to the purposes of statesmen, and devoid of the interest excited by an immediate reference to the conduct and duties of individuals, may amuse the studious and the speculative, but can lead to no good prac tical result in the improvement of society. The reader, therefore, must not expect to find in the following pages the neat conciseness of a logical de duction; but rather adissertation, in which fulness has been sometimes studied at the risk of occasional repetition, that ideas new to the mind might not fail of their impression from any want of variety in the views under which they are presented.
