Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery in the United States: Its Evils, Alleviations, and Remedies The first Of August, 1838, is memorable throughout the world, as the day on which eight hundred thousand human beings in the British West Indies had the shackles of the slave struck from their limbs and were restored to their rights as men. It was a great day for mankind, one Of those historical days which measure the progress Of the human race. And yet the West Indian slaves, instead Of being liberated by their masters, owed their freedom to the votes Of a Parliament which held its sittings three thousand miles across the ocean, and in which the masters were not represented. England generously contributed as a partial compensation for the slaves, which burden fell, in the shape Of an increase to the public debt, on a large and rich nation; but a far larger pecuniary loss, as such property is reckoned, fell upon the slaveholder. Far be it from us to detract from the merits Of this great event, whose nobleness lights up the dark track Of history, and must be an inspiring example to all times. The world cannot afford to forget it. But let us remember that, if the emanei patiou Of the slaves in the West Indies, by an act Of the British Par liament, was a triumph Of the philanthropy of England, similar acts of emancipation by the legislatures of the northern States, years before, and the liberation by their immediate owners of so many slaves at the South, are not less decided proofs Of the philanthropy of America. Under the circumstances, the existence Of more than free blacks in the United States, who owe their freedom to the free choice Of those who were the immediate owners of themselves or their fathers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery: And the Means of Its Abolition More than forty years ago the writer of the following pages read Wilberforce's publications on the slave trade, in which were described the various methods of procuring the slaves in Africa, the horrors of the "middle passage," and their cruel treatment in the West Indies. In perusing these statements of that great philanthropist and friend of the injured African race, his feelings became, in some measure, enlisted in favor of the colored people of our land, and in opposition to the slavery upheld by our nation. He was never sensible of feeling the prejudice against color, so often manifested; but, in his intercourse with colored persons, treated them, as he would others. And having them for many years as neighbors, and, not unfrequently, as hired help, they were admitted to eat with the family at the same table. In 1824 he was invited to attend a political celebration on the 4th of July. In declining the invitation, he noticed the inconsistency of our conduct in celebrating our liberty, founded upon the principle that all men are created free and equal, and proclaiming this "self-evident truth," and yet holding hundreds of thousands of our fellow men in degrading bondage. The next year, he was requested to preach on the 4th of July. The sermon was, by request, printed. The following extract will show the writer's views respecting American slavery. "Our conduct in relation to the Africans has been most inconsistent, absurd, and criminal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If it can be shown to be right, then it is expedient; if wrong, then it cannot be shown to be expedient, and, if possible, it ought to be abolished. It is the idea of the wrong of slavery which has misled, and is contin uing to mislead, the American mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voice From the South: Discussing, Among Other Subjects, Slavery, and Its Remedy So much perplexity clouds every aspect of American Slavery, it involves such serious questions affecting us in our moral, social and political relations, that there is naturally a morbid sensibility in the national mind which shrinks from all moral, philosophical or political examination but as all the great and best men of the South unbiased by the lust for wealth, or the lust for power or pride of party, have ever united with the general sentiment of mankind in its condemnation as a great moral, social and political evil, surely as patriots, as reason able men responsible to a great future tribunal, we are called upon to honestly and bravely look the momentous question in the face. Indeed the question has become so mixed up with pecuniary, party, political, and religious considerations, so long viewed through a contracted theology, or an undiscriminating false philanthropy, that we should not wonder to find the public mind confused, disgusted and disinclined patiently, calm ly, and candidly to examine the matter, neither in its abstract simplicity nor in the complications of its modified character as a political institution yet, to reconcile difficulties, relieve con science, reach just conclusions, a proper sense of duty and act Wisely, this is essential, for there is all the difference of light and darkness between abstract slavery and slavery as a politi cal institution. Injustice and Oppression constitute the one, upon the other rests the protection and safety of the African Upon the one the gross assumption, teeming with injustice, abuses and immorality, that the slave is a mere transferable chattel and also the authority, irrespective of all social neces sity, to perpetuate the institution; upon the other the only hope for a bettered condition of the negro. If the abolitionist in his blind impulsive course. Regardless of the spirit and scope of Holy Writ, or the suggestions of reason, has done mischief in their virtuous zeal to counteract the madness and wickedness of abolitionism, good men have been car ried beyond the necessities of the case, beyond the legitimate grounds of defence, have passed through the enemy to a friend ly province, have brought into conflict divine precepts and di vine teachings, have boldly assailed the inalienable rights of man, fraternized with wrong and oppression, have overlooked the origin of human and confounded natural and political rights, given man a positive absolute and inherent right of property in his fellow; thus, in their turn, have they become vulnerable to the shafts of truth and virtue, and call upon us to fall back upon first principles to counteract error. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery and the Domestic Slave-Trade in the United States: In a Series of Letters Addressed to the Executive Committee of the American Union for the Relief and Improvement of the Colored Race The American Union for the Relief and Im provement of the Colored Race, was formed in Boston, in January, 1835. An exposition of the principles and plans of the Union was soon after published by the Executive Committee. One of the principal objects of the Society, as stated in that paper, is to collect and publish information of an authentic character respect ing Slavery. It is conceived that there is yet no inconsiderable dearth of well-prepared and trust-worthy facts respecting this great national evil. It is obvious that it cannot be peacefully removed, except as it is seen in its true light. It is in prosecution of this great branch of their labors, that the Committee present thefollowing Report concerning Slavery and the domestic slave-trade as it exists in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Coming, as it does, from a gentleman who is well acquainted with the whole subject of Slavery, from an actual residence of a number of years in a slave-holding state, it will be read with much interest and profit. It gives, in the opinion of the Committee, an accurate account of Slavery, and of the public sentiment respect ing it in the district of country visited. As such, it is respectfully commended to the atten tion of all the friends of the African race. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sin of Slavery, and Its Remedy: Containing Some Reflections on the Moral Influence of African Colonization The American revolution was incomplete. It left one sixth part of the population the victims of a servitude immeasurably more de basing, than that from which it delivered the rest. While this na tion held up its declaration of independence - its noble bill of human rights, before an admiring world, in one hand it mortified the friends of humanity, by oppressing the poor and defenceless with the other. The progress of time has not lessened the evil. There are now held in involuntary and perpetual slavery, in the southern half of this re public, more than of men, women, and children, guarded with a vigilance, which strives, and with success appalling as it is complete, to shut out every ray of knowledge, human and divine, and reduce them as nearly as possible to a level with the brutes. These miserable slaves are not only compelled to labor without choice and without hire, but they are subjected to the cruelty and lust of their masters to an unbounded extent. In the northern states there is very generally a sympathy with the slave-holders, and a prejudice against the slaves, which shows itself in palliating the crime of slave-holding, and in most unrighteously disregarding the rights, and vilifying the characters of the free colored men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herod, John and Jesus: Or American Slavery and Its Christian Cure Eighteen hundred years ago, there appeared in the corrupt nation of Judea, a stern and terrible Prophet. John the Baptist appeared, crying "Repent ye, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." He came preaching in the wilderness, clothed with camels hair and a girdle of skin about his loins, and he ate locusts and wild honey. The people of the proudest city and country on earth flocked to hear him. He preached a gospel of terror and destruction to the wicked. 'Now," he said, "the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down and cast into the fire." He said to his hearers: "Oh, generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" For now, he said, had appeared the awful day of reckoning. The high places should be brought low, and the low places be exalted. One was coming, mightier than he, who would baptize with the Holy Ghost and fire; who would purge the earth and burn the chaff with unquenchable flames. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery Distinguished From the Slavery of English Theorists, and Justified by the Law of Nature The first article of the amended Constitution Of the United States declares that Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibit ing the exercise thereof. This declaration is justly dear to the hearts of the American people. It secures to every citizen the enjoyment of liberty of conscience, or the sacred right to worship God according to the dictates of his own judgment, with none on earth to make him afraid. It puts the various denominations Of relig ion. On an equal footing, protecting all but showing preference to none; and thus saves the people from a prolific source of jealousy and discord. The dictate of practical wisdom, it is at once the charter Of religious lib erty and a preventive of religious dissension. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into Scriptural and Ancient Servitude, in Which It Is Shown That Neither Was Chattel Slavery: With the Remedy for American Slavery The following pages contain the result of the author's investigations of what the Holy Scriptures teach on the subject of Chattel Slavery, for the last twelve years, as concisely stated as possible. He has read much in defense of the Holy Scriptures against the charge of supporting slavery, but nothing that has, in his judgment, set their teachings in the true light. He is well aware that he has taken much higher ground than has been taken by anti-slavery men, and asks a candid examination of the proof brought to sustain it, and the reasonings on that proof. He has been convinced for several years, that there never was a slaveholder in the church of God, either under the patriarchal, Jewish, or Christian dispensations, until after the days of the Apostles; and that the Great Head of the same never allowed one to be in it. The following pages exhibit the proof on which that faith rests. Slavery was prohibited by positive law in all nations, from the time of Noah until after the days of Moses, and had not found its way into Asia Minor at the time christian churches were planted there, and the epistles were written to those churches. Satisfactory proof of all this will be found in the following pages. This is all new ground - outside of all that has been attempted on this subject, and if fully established, forever settles the question against the slaveholder's right to membership in the church of the living God.
