I make no claim to the divine gift of poesy. My poems are unembellished and unadorned, and were written under many difficulties. The inheritance of defective vision has. Been a lifelong sorrow, and has made my work very arduous, and but for the aid of a kind sister, who has acted as my amanuensis, it would never have been accomplished. My affliction has also prevented much of the revision of these poems which would otherwise have been performed. I therefore, asking the indulgence of my friends, Offer them to the public as they are. Book Synopsis The South in Prose and Poetry (Classic Reprint) by : Henry M. Gill
Download or read book The South in Prose and Poetry (Classic Reprint) written by Henry M. Gill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South in Prose and Poetry For a long time the literature of the South was neglected, or, perhaps, it is nearer the truth to say that it was ignored. Thomas Nelson Page, in a speech some years ago, stated that the rest of the world looked upon the South as a section of the United States without a literature, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, an authority throughout the world, published an arraignment far more scathing than this. We of the South have no one to blame for this condition of affairs but ourselves. It is only natural that, if we did not seem to place a proper value upon our own writers, no other section was going to herald their fame except where the overwhelming force of genius compelled it. We can but take the form of the mold in which we are cast. Our range of vision is limited by our horizon, and unless that horizon is lifted our field of vision will always remain the same. To those whose knowledge of American literature has been acquired merely from text-books written by men who have given scant space to the authors of the South, it is, in spite of its truth, an astonishing fact that Simms ranks only second to Hawthorne; that Poe surpasses all the other of our poets; that Calhoun was our most profound logician, and Maury the greatest American scientist of his day. Bradbury and Agnew, in whose periodicals they originally appeared. They have, of course, been overhauled. I have tried to make a book which might appeal at any ordinary time to any ordinary person. To this end I have included no political pieces, and none, I hope, in which the subject-matter had only the transient interest of the moment. As the rejection of others was, in some cases, rather a painful proceeding, I trust that it may be accounted to me for righteousness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cactus; Or Thorns and Blossoms: A Collection of Satirical and Miscellaneous, Embracing Religious, Temperance, and Memorial Poems HE amiable and gifted authoress of this volume of poems has been long known to the writer. She is a native Georgian, born in the town of Monticello, June 13th, 1838, graduated in the Female College in Madison, Ga, July 26th, 1855, and was married in the same place, September 4th, 1862, her husband being, at that time, a surgeon in the Confederate army. In early girlhood, her poetic taste was manifested; and the composition which, under the authorities of the institution, she was required to prepare, as her last public exercise, to be read at com mencement, and before diplomas were conferred, was il lustrative of her talent for poetry and satire. It was a brief, sarcastic Poem upon the question supposed to be prominent with many young men in quest of a fair part ner for life, viz Has she any tin? A distinguished gentleman who was present at the occasion when it was delivered, afterwards wrote in relation to itz - I doubt whether another head in the vast assemblage could have perpetrated the like. This, with some others of her poems, have, I think been favorably noticed in Hart's American Literature and in The Living Writers of the South, by Davidson. The foregoing article, although an early production, is included in this collection. Since that period, she has continued to indulge heir governing proclivity, and has often invoked the aid of the myrtle-crowned Erato.
