Book excerpt: Correspondence from American entomologist and conchologist Thomas Say (1787-1834) to German entomologist and physician Christian Rudolph Wilhelm Wiedemann (1770-1840), dated 1823-1824. A letter dated November 1823 notes Say has just returned from an expedition to the Northwest, where the party reached Lake Winnepeg. The goverment-sponsored expedition, led by Major Stephen Harriman Long (1787-1864), also journeyed to the Minnesota River, Red River, Lake of the Woods, and Lake Superior. The letter also includes a list insect species under the heading "For Professor Wiedemann (before April 1823)." Correspondence dated in 1824, in reply to a May 16, 1824 letter from Wiedemann, thanks him for sending a number of volumes on natural history and specimens of Hymenoptera, as well as for his observations on Say's insect descriptions. "I should certainly have adopted them all, if this had been in my power, but the names were published," he writes, adding, "I have adopted & in fact have always acted on the principle that a specific name once published, provided it be accompanied by a description, it can never be radically changed, under any pretense whatever (however bad it may be), excepting the circumstances of its having been previously employed in the same genus." Say also describes male and female specimens of Dilophus thoracicus (mosquito) he possesses. There is also an undated letter from Say accompanied by a list of insect names.
