But his actual manuscript has never been found, except for the Title Page, Table of Texts, and two Bibles that our President used to clip scriptures and then paste into a notebook...This new edition highlights: the words of Jesus in red-letters; the moral and doctrinal precepts of Mr. Jefferson's work; seven rare, historic facsimiles of Jefferson's Title Page, Table of Texts, and 1791 Bible; and three Christian scholars who explain the context of Jefferson's work for Native Americans, and defend it from the views of skeptics and secularists." -- from cover.

So goes the line in much of academia today. With impeccable scholarship, Dr. Patton has carefully researched, reconstructed, and reproduced Jefferson's The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth. He convincingly demonstrates that Jefferson never intended his 'wee little book' to be a new version of the Bible; rather, it was to be a compendium of Bible verses that Jefferson especially recommended to Native Americans.Jefferson includes many significant verses in this compendium such as: Luke 3:23-38 which traces Jesus' ancestry back to Adam; Mark 14:61-62 where Jesus proclaimed that He is indeed the Son of God, the Messiah (Christ), and the great I AM of the Old Testament, Exodus 3:14; Matthew 11:4-5 where Jesus tells the disciples of John the Baptist that his Messiahship is evidenced by healing the blind, the lame, and raising the dead. Those who read Dr. Patton's book with an open mind will conclude that Thomas Jefferson was closer to orthodoxy than many have previously thought.- Colonal John EidsmoeSenior Counsel & Resident Scholar, Foundation for Moral Law - Montgomery, AlabamaAuthor of: Historical and Theological Foundations of Law (a three volume set) and Christianity and the Constitution (and many other books).Dr. Judd Patton, Dr. Mark Beliles and David Barton are to be commended for correcting the prevailing liberal view that Thomas Jefferson did not respect the Bible, and indeed cut it up and "mangled" Holy Writ?it is valuable to know?that he held the Scriptures in high regard and simply edited this [1804] version of the Gospels concentrating on Jesus' moral teachings, as a manual for missionary use to Native Americans.- Garrett Ward ShedonThe John Morton Beaty Professor of Politics, University of Virginia's College at Wise, Virginia Author of: The Political Philosophy of Thomas Jefferson, Religion and Political Culture in Jefferson's Virginia, Jefferson and Ataturk: Political Philosophies, and What Would Jefferson Say?

Book excerpt: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth (The Jefferson Bible) Thomas Jefferson - In 1804 Thomas Jefferson decided to study the gospels to see if he could distill the essence of Jesus' teachings into a concise book that could be quickly read and easily understood. This volume is the result, offering valuable insights into the teachings of Jesus Christ and into the mind and beliefs of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson used a razor to cut the sections where Jesus was teaching out and then he pasted them all together into a coherent narrative. In a sense this book is a precursor to the red letter editions of the bible emphasizing the teaching of Jesus.

Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Book excerpt: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, commonly referred to as the Jefferson Bible, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the later years of his life by cutting and pasting with a razor and glue numerous sections from the New Testament as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's condensed composition is especially notable for its exclusion of all miracles by Jesus and most mentions of the supernatural, including sections of the four gospels that contain the Resurrection and most other miracles, and passages that portray Jesus as divine. Jefferson wrote that "Jesus did not mean to impose himself on mankind as the son of God." He called the writers of the New Testament "ignorant, unlettered men" who produced "superstitions, fanaticisms, and fabrications." He called the Apostle Paul the "first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus." He dismissed the concept of the Trinity as "mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus." He believed that the clergy used religion as a "mere contrivance to filch wealth and power to themselves" and that "in every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty." And he wrote in a letter to John Adams that "the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter." Jefferson never referred to his work as a Bible, and the full title of this 1804 version was, The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth, being Extracted from the Account of His Life and Doctrines Given by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; Being an Abridgement of the New Testament for the Use of the Indians, Unembarrased with Matters of Fact or Faith beyond the Level of their Comprehensions. Jefferson frequently expressed discontent with this earlier version. The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth represents the fulfillment of his desire to produce a more carefully assembled edition.

Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists, but others reject this claim, stating that his 1804 work was simply intended to instruct Native Americans about Jesus' moral teaching while his second work was for his own personal study. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, conceived the idea of extracting a gospel purified of what he saw as extraneous philosophical, mythological, and theological elements. To do so, he took verses from the four canonical gospels and arranged them into a single narrative, focusing on the actual words of Jesus. This work was never published during Jefferson's lifetime, but was inherited by his grandson and printed for the first time in the early twentieth century. The original bound manuscript, often referred to as the Jefferson Bible, is held by the United States National Museum in Washington.

Book excerpt: The book is Jefferson's notions as to the life and doctrines of Jesus, and it is significant that he ends the Life with the laying of Jesus in the sepulchre. The resurrection formed no part of Jefferson's belief. The doctrines selected by Jefferson as commending themselves to him are the precepts which the Christians sedulously avoid quoting. As a whole, he considered the doctrines of Jesus defective, and to have been made worse by the Christians, and so made a wee little book of the doctrines he deemed the best.

Book excerpt: Using a razor, Jefferson cut and arranged selected verses from the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in chronological order, mingling excerpts from one text to those of another in order to create a single narrative. Thus he begins with Luke 2 and Luke 3, then follows with Mark 1 and Matthew 3. He provides a record of which verses he selected and of the order in which he arranged them in his "Table of the Texts from the Evangelists employed in this Narrative and of the order of their arrangement." The Jefferson Bible begins with an account of Jesus's birth without references to angels, genealogy, or prophecy. Miracles, references to the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, and Jesus' resurrection are also absent from the Jefferson Bible.[5] The work ends with the words: "Now, in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus. And rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed." These words correspond to the ending of John 19 in the Bible.

Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was Thomas Jefferson's effort to extract what he considered the pertinent doctrine of Jesus by removing sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. Using a razor, Jefferson cut and arranged selected verses from the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in chronological order, mingling excerpts from one text to those of another in order to create a single narrative. After completion of The Life and Morals, about 1820, Jefferson shared it with a number of friends, but he never allowed it to be published during his lifetime. The most complete form Jefferson produced was inherited by his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, and was published in 1895 by the National Museum in Washington. Once published in black-and-white facsimile by the Government Printing Office in 1900 as a gift for new members of Congress, the Jefferson Bible has never before been published in color in its complete form. The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition is an exact facsimile reproduction based on the original copy in the Smithsonian collections. The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition is as beautiful an object as was so painstakingly crafted by Thomas Jefferson himself.

Book excerpt: Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, produced in private his own version of the teachings of Jesus as set forth in the Gospels of the New Testament. Jefferson carefully excised, from the King James version of the Gospels, those passages that reflected Jefferson's own view of the world. He called the resulting work "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth" (commonly referred to as "The Jefferson Bible"). Following Jefferson's death, the work was released to the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Words of Jesus brings to fruition Thomas Jefferson’s centuries-old project to present the story of Jesus in the Lord’s own words. The Words of Jesus takes Jefferson’s work on the gospels and extends it by including sayings from the Acts of the Apostles, 1 and 2 Corinthians, and Revelation. Author Roy W. Hauser pulls from these New Testament books the sayings that will complete the picture of Jesus Christ that Jefferson began to sketch with his Jefferson Bible. This one of a kind book is a study guide that contains every word that Jesus ever spoke in the New Testament. The Words of Jesus begins by telling the story of Roy W. Hauser. This autobiographical introduction shows the extent to which pain and brokenness can challenge a person’s life. His personal story makes clear that the sayings of Jesus share His power to heal, to forgive, to inspire, and to guide individuals to live faithful and good lives in preparation for the coming Kingdom of God. Your search for truth may lead you to listen to Jesus, to ask how to follow Him, to respond to His invitation to live by faith, to attend to His law, and to dwell daily in His goodness. In that case, The Words of Jesus provides the guidebook you will need to hear what the Lord has to say to you, to obey His word with obedience, and to trust He will make you ready for the day when He will return to establish His kingdom.
