Book excerpt: The Inland Empire—the area east of Los Angeles and located primarily in San Bernardino and Riverside counties—is known as Southern California's big backyard. And with its mountain, foothill, valley, and desert recreational opportunities, it s a hiker s paradise. Afoot & Afield Inland Afoot and Afield Inland Empire describes more than 250 noteworthy hikes ranging from easy to very strenuous in this first comprehensive hiking guide to the length and breadth of Inland Empire. These hikes explore Southern California s three tallest mountains, the stark beauty of the high desert, including Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve, as well as trails that wind through urban and regional parks. Each hike is shown on custom-created maps that also include GPS waypoints: the maps alone are worth the price of the book.

Whether you are currently learning it, practicing it, a hypnotherapy professional, or just plain interested in the amazing art of hypnotherapy, this book will be your most valuable resource. Hypnotherapy is not the only discipline covered in this huge store of knowledge: among many other things, you will learn about health from a holistic point of view, benefits of nutrition, meditation, about relationships, sexuality and more. Steve Webster brilliantly explains: ? Simple, complex and metaphysical hypnotherapy. ? The differences between hypnosis and hypnotherapy. ? Approaches and amazing new techniques to use on different personality types. ? How to use 18 Laws of Suggestibility to rid clients of illness, disease and behavioral disorder, and how to reprogram your mind. ? Mechanics of hypnosis, the scientific intricacies, and 27 diagnostic tools to help you.... ? How to treat the top 35 afflictions like weight loss, anxiety, pain, sleep disorders, and social phobias. ? Guided imagery, neuroplasticity, epigenetics, neuro-linguistic programming, ideomotor responses and the power of dream venting. ? Your clients coping, blocking, release, and defense mechanisms. ? Body syndromes, how emotions affect us, and the subconscious mind. ? How one health disorder, HHS, might be responsible for 85% of afflictions. ? The real Law of Attraction, and how to make it work for you. Steve has coined a new description for hypnotherapistsConsciousness Engineersbecause thats what they are! The clients consciousness creates their reality, and the hypnotherapist adjusts that consciousness. The subconscious mind vibrates at a level where it does not know illness, disease and behavioral disorder; but the conscious mind vibrates at a lower level and attracts these negative energies. After reading the Consciousness Engineering section (Volume 2), you will understand: ? Your 3 minds, their vibrational levels, and how to increase your power of creation. ? How to manifest anything, and how to become an ascended master. ? Learn what the subconscious mind is, and how to guide your client to engage with it, and harness its amazing powers. The two volumes explain how you create your whole world, and how to create a world that brings you (and your clients!) joy and peace. It explains levels of consciousness, how to increase yours, and how you are immortal in your quantum world. With over 100 inductions, deepeners and convincers, with over 100 original diagrams and images, and with over 100 informative tables and quotes. This book really is your hypnotherapy Bible!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diary of Anton Reiff Jr. (c. 1830–1916) is one of only a handful of primary sources to offer a firsthand account of antebellum riverboat travel in the American South. The Pyne and Harrison Opera Troupe, a company run by English sisters Susan and Louisa Pyne and their business partner, tenor William Harrison, hired Reiff, then freelancing in New York, to serve as musical director and conductor for the company’s American itinerary. The grueling tour began in November 1855 in Boston and then proceeded to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati, where, after a three-week engagement, the company boarded a paddle steamer bound for New Orleans. It was at that point that Reiff started to keep his diary. Diligently transcribed and annotated by Michael Burden, Reiff’s diary presents an extraordinarily rare view of life with a foreign opera company as it traveled the country by river and rail. Surprisingly, Reiff comments little on the Pyne-Harrison performances themselves, although he does visit the theaters in the river towns, including New Orleans, where he spends evenings both at the French Opera and at the Gaiety. Instead, Reiff focuses his attention on other passengers, on the mechanics of the journey, on the landscape, and on events he encounters, including the 1856 Mardi Gras and the unveiling of the statue of Andrew Jackson in New Orleans's Jackson Square. Reiff is clearly captivated by the river towns and their residents, including the enslaved, whom he encountered whenever the boat tied up. Running throughout the journal is a thread of anxiety, for, apart from the typical dangers of a river trip, the winter of 1855–1856 was one of the coldest of the century, and the steamer had difficulties with river ice. Historians have used Reiff’s journal as source material, but until now the entire text, which is archived in Louisiana State University’s Special Collections in Hill Memorial Library, has only been available in its original state. As a primary source, the published journal will have broad appeal to historians and other readers interested in antebellum riverboat travel, highbrow entertainment, and the people and places of the South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas C. Patterson’s large-scale history of the Inland Empire of Southern California traces the social, political and economic changes in this region from the first Native American settlement 12,000 years ago to the present. Framing his discussion of this region in the general growth trajectory of California’s socio-economic history, he is able to connect landscape, resources, wealth, labor, and inequality using a Marxian framework for many key periods of the region’s history. In moving between large scale historical changes, regional adaptations and resistance to those changes, and a framework that places those responses in theoretical context, Patterson’s work allows the reader to see how inland Southern California developed into the warehouse empire of the 21st century and its prospects for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two centuries, nearly all historical accounts of American theatre have focused on New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. As a result, the story of theatre on the frontier consists primarily of regional studies with limited scope. Thomas A. Bogar’s Theatre on the American Frontier provides an overdue, balanced treatment of the accomplishments of the troupes working in the trans-Appalachian West. From its origins in late eighteenth-century Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and Louisville, frontier theatre grew by the close of the nineteenth century to encompass more than a dozen centers of vibrant theatrical activity. Audiences—mainly pioneers struggling with the hardships of establishing a life in the backcountry—enjoyed thrilling melodramas, the comedies of George Colman the Younger and John O’Keeffe, and even the tragedies of William Shakespeare. Theatre companies that ventured into this challenging and unfamiliar territory did so with a combination of daring and determination. Bogar’s comprehensive study brings this neglected history into the spotlight, cementing these figures and their theatrical productions and practices in their rightful place.
