Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Thomas Carlyle "If," says Carlyle, "an individual is of sufficient consequence to have his life recorded for public remembrance, we have always been of opinion that the public ought to be made acquainted with all the inward springs and relations of his character." Heartily concurring in this opinion, I have ventured to make the study of this great man's life my aim for months past - to try and account for the gloom and despondency which were so marked in his character, and which, on the surface of things, seem almost unaccountable. In the following pages I have endeavoured to give to my readers incidents in his life, traits in his character, that made him so little of an optimist in expression, and yet the inward conviction that at heart he did not really believe the universe to be demoniacal, but God-like, and man the temple of the Most High. The following pages, I trust, will prove that he was no selfish, cantankerous, domestic tyrant, or teacher of virtues he failed himself to put in practice; that in him there was nothing false or insincere; that he was throughout his long, chequered existence actuated by noble and heroic motives, carrying heavy burdens enough to crush a less dauntless spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Thomas Carlyle The duty of acknowledging assistance derived from literary sources is very generally spared to the authors of this series by the copious bibliographies which constitute one of its distinctive features. By these the courteous reader may conjecture what the writer must have read, and the critical reader may discover what he has omitted to read. Some special services, nevertheless, claim special expressions of gratitude. While in no respect responsible for any of the author's statements or opinions not directly quoted from himself, Professor Masson has laid him under the deepest obligation for help and counsel. To Mr. Alexander Ireland, another old and faithful friend of Carlyle's, the writer is indebted for his perusal of the proof-sheets, and for the loan of a copy of the "Reminiscences," in which the innumerable errors of the first edition, only within these last few days superseded by Professor Norton's, were carefully corrected by Mr. Ireland's own hand. Mr. Leslie Stephen's article in the "Dictionary of National Biography" has proved most serviceable as a luminous digest of the subject. Lastly, the author's thanks are due to the kind friend who has relieved the biographer of a Prophet of the secular and sublunary task of compiling an index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Thomas Carlyle, 1826-1836 The letters contained in this volume have been selected from a great mass mainly addressed to the various members of Carlyle's family. In the years in which they were written he had few important correspondents in the outer world. The letters as here given afford a tolerably continuous account of his life from his marriage to the period when his fame was about to be established by the publication of his French Revolution. Many interesting letters of these years appear in Mr. Froude's Life of Carlyle; but they are printed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Thomas Carlyle, 1826-1836, Vol. 2 Our plans here are getting a little more fixed: I can now give you some faint fore shadow of them. I pride myself that I have never gone half a foot out of my road in search of what are called prospects: it is yet and has always been clear to me that I was one whom Promotion was least of all likely to visit. Thank Heaven I know my trade: it is to write tram while I can be kept alive by so doing, and to die writing it when I can no longer be kept alive. SO feeling, I look upon all mortals with the friendliest humour; let Kings and Chancellors fight their own battles, and all speed to them let the Devil go his way, and I will go mine. Therefore after settling my Author-business in London, I will not stay an hour, waiting at the pool, as some advise me. On the whole the world stands related. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: A History of the First Forty Years of His Life, 1795-1835 Mr. Carlyle expressed a desire in his will that of him no biography should be written. I find the same reluctance in his Journal. No one, he said, was likely to understand a history, the secret of which was unknown to his closest friends. He hoped that his wishes would be respected. Partly to take the place of a biography of himself, and part ly for other reasons, he collected the letters of his wife - letters which covered the whole period of his life in London to the date of her death, when his own active work was finished. He prepared them for publication, adding notes and introductory explanations, as the last sacred duty which remained to him in the world. He intended it as a monument to a character of extreme beauty; while it would tell the public as much about himself as it could reasonably expect to learn. These letters he placed in my hands eleven years ago, with materials for an Introduction which he was himself unable to complete. He could do no more with it, he said. He could not make up his mind to direct positively the publication even of the letters themselves. He wished them to be published, but he left the decision to myself; and when I was reluctant to undertake the sole responsibility, he said that, if I was in doubt when the time came, I might consult his brother John and his friend Mr. Forster. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: His Life His Books His Theories Besides being, as he styles himself, a Writer of Books, he is the most notable Talker of the generation. Never, says Mr. Milburn, the blind preacher, had I any idea of what eloquent talk meant until I listened to Carlyle. Of his table talk Mr. Milburn has given some examples, trea sured up in a memory which, quickened by his infirmity of vision, enables him to reproduce word for word the whole of a long conversation or dis course. From the lips of the blind preacher we have written down many pages of this table-talk, some of which, mainly autobiographical, will be here given. The life of Carlyle, however, is his writings, and mainly from these we propose to endeavor to set forth what kind of work he has done, and what manner of man he came to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: An Essay, Reprinted From 'Blackwood's Magazine' This being the root-idea, we have said it al ways presents itself to him in a particular aspect, which he has expounded in his 'sartor Resartus.' It appears to him that the last suit of clothes with which the world was invested is worn out. In Church and State, and all Society, he sees only looped and windowed raggedness. All the insti tutions in which the moral necessities of man are embodied, are in decay and ruin - even as the world's former wardrobes of paganism, and monkery, and chivalry, exist only in museums. The world is out at elbows, and the time is out of joint; and Mr Car lyle, not without sad appreciation of the cursed spite which dwells in the circumstance, believes that he was born to set it right. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Note Books of Thomas Carlyle: From 23d March, 1822, to 16th May, 1832 To the student of the growth of Carlyle's intellectual powers and the development of his opinions, these books afford material of interest hardly inferior to that contained in his Reminiscence: and in his Letters - letters remarkable beyond most others for the full ness of their exhibition of the character of their writer, for their sincerity and directness, and for the union in them of ease and rapid ity of composition with excellence of expres sion. The Notebooks display in like manner, if in less degree, the mastery which Carlyle possessed over his own faculties. He com plains often of the difficulty he experienced in writing, but his letters and his journal alike re veal the mental discipline which enabled him to give off-hand an adequate and clear expres sion to his thought. There is seldom an erasure or defective phrase in his most rapid and in stant writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
