And so, in an effort to bring to joy to his town, Jack kidnaps Santa and takes his place as the jolly old elf. Only through a number of things going horribly wrong does Jack learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Book excerpt: From the renowned comedian, creator, star and executive producer/multiple title-holder of Comedy Central's Important Things with Demetri Martin comes a bold, original, and rectangular kind of humor book. Demetri's first literary foray features longer-form essays and conceptual pieces (such as Protagonists' Hospital, a melodrama about the clinic doctors who treat only the flesh wounds and minor head scratches of Hollywood action heroes), as well as his trademark charts, doodles, drawings, one-liners, and lists (i.e., the world views of optimists, pessimists and contortionists), Martin's material is varied, but his unique voice and brilliant mind will keep readers in stitches from beginning to end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep in the bottom of her late mother’s cedar chest, Barbara Gales Macaulay discovered a lifeline to the past: more than 300 letters written by her late father, Richard “Dick” Gales to his wife “Hay” (Hazel) when he was a soldier during World War II. His letters discussed family, the terrible army food, and funny little incidents but they were also filled with love and hope for the future and signed off with his heartfelt signature, “I love you forever, and I ain’t kiddin’.” Dick’s story not only describes the rigidness of army life and the comradery that made it bearable but also the fear of never returning home or feeling normal again. This Is War and I Ain’t Kiddin’: A Collection of World War II Letters from Dad is Barbara Gales Macaulay’s labour of love. Along with portions of her dad’s letters, Macaulay pieces together this chronology with excerpts from the regimental diary and veterans’ memoirs. It’s not just a biography of her father, but a book that honours the Canadian men and women affected by the war, whether soldiers fighting on the frontlines, “Bomb Girls” employed in factories or families supporting the troops back home.

This book is about my children’s mysteries written between the ages of 9 and 16. The years would have been 1975 to 1982. During this time, I was completely oblivious to a terrible truth about myself. I was living in Daler Cottage, the given name of my childhood home. At the age of 19, I would start a novel called The Lessons. This novel was fuelled by a burning fantasy world that was eating me up inside. For the next thirty years, I would struggle with this novel, unaware of this truth. The story of The Lessons is covered in my other book. Prior to my novel-writing phase, I was writing these mysteries as well as painting and devising plays. I kept a diary between 1977 and 1988, during which I attained a degree in Fine Art. I would continue to write and paint for many years to come. My diaries illuminate the circumstances surrounding the writing of my children’s stories. Unknown to me, clues to this horrific truth have leaked into all my creations like oil bubbling up through the ground. At the age of 51, I finally learned the truth. This book describes the decoding process to find the true meaning behind my children’s mysteries. Due to the nature of this book, names and certain details have been altered in order to protect identities and I am writing under a pseudonym. With images throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money is Hollywood's great theme-but money laundered into something else, something more. Money can be given a particular occasion and career, as box office receipts, casino winnings, tax credits, stock prices, lotteries, inheritances. Or money can become number, and numbers can be anything: pixels, batting averages, votes, likes. Through explorations of all these and more, J.D. Connor's Hollywood Math and Aftermath provides a stimulating and original take on “the equation of pictures,” the relationship between Hollywood and economics since the 1970s. Touched off by an engagement with the work of Gilles Deleuze, Connor demonstrates the centrality of the economic image to Hollywood narrative. More than just a thematic study, this is a conceptual history of the industry that stretches from the dawn of the neoclassical era through the Great Recession and beyond. Along the way, Connor explores new concepts for cinema studies: precession and recession, pervasion and staking, ostension and deritualization. Enlivened by a wealth of case studies-from The Big Short and The Wolf of Wall Street to Equity and Blackhat, from Moneyball to 12 Years a Slave, Titanic to Lost, The Exorcist to WALLE, Déjà Vu to Upstream Color, Contagion to The Untouchables, Ferris Bueller to Pacific Rim, The Avengers to The Village-Hollywood Math and Aftermath is a bravura portrait of the industry coming to terms with its own numerical underpinnings.

Book excerpt: The Sounds of Science provides a comprehensive account of a large-scale scientific experiment with globally operating seafood corporations headquartered in North America, Europe, and Asia. It describes how scientists worked to identify these, world’s largest seafood companies, and how their disproportionate powers were mobilized in a coalition of companies called SeaBOS (Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship), aiming to provide global and science-based industry leadership on ocean stewardship. As invoked by the cover art (Flow, 2020) by world-renowned creative director, Kashiwa Sato, the experiment is creating a small wave of change that sits within a larger wave, supporting and generating larger movements towards improved stewardship of the planet. A new direction for the private sector is emerging, and new priorities are flourishing. The book explores how corporations, guided by science, can be part of the solution to the biosphere challenges. Written in collaboration with international experts on sustainability, ocean ecosystems, fisheries policy, and corporations, this book explores the mechanisms leading to the evolution of cooperation, and the barriers to address in order to engage in collaborative learning, corporate change and novel science. It offers tangible advice to scientists on how to work with the private sector for a better, more sustainable world. The Sounds of Science is an important resource for scientists interested in engaging with the private sector. Corporate leaders and policy makers will find this book useful for understanding, collaborating, and working with the planet to reach global sustainability goals. Details the origin, developments, and effects of SeaBOS (Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship) Offers workable solutions and out-of-the-box thinking for university scientists, chief executives and corporate sustainability experts Provides insight on tools, conditions, and navigation techniques for cooperation across cultures Includes insider and personal perspectives of developing and nurturing relationships between ocean scientists and corporate leaders
