Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is good, God does good, and oh, how He wants you to be happy. In her new book, The Sacrament of Happy: What a Smiling God Brings to a Wounded World, Lisa Harper unveils that happiness is a gift from God that we can unashamedly enjoy. Happiness tends to be cast as a fluffy emotion without substance rather than a biblical concept, but this is not theologically accurate. Wearing the twin hats of both seminarian and belly-laughing adoptive mom, Lisa Harper dismantles the old-school idea that joy, not happiness, is the truly spiritual emotion, and asserts that Christ-followers are actually called to happiness. We are called to happiness, and this happiness is not impacted by personal or global tumult. In fact, happiness is a sacrament. The general definition of sacrament is “a visible sign of inward grace.” In communities of faith, it most often refers to holy communion or the Eucharist. In the broadest understanding, however, a sacrament is a gift bestowed by God, and in that case, ‘happiness’ is absolutely a sacrament—a visible, sometimes even audible, sign of inward grace! Lisa shares heart-wrenching difficult stories from her past, as well as some side-splitting hilarity along the way. Throughout the book, we see that happiness and sadness can coexist and ebb and flow like the tides. Christine Caine, Founder of A21 & Propel Women, had this to say about Lisa’s new book: "The Sacrament of Happy—like all of Lisa’s messages and books—enriches my understanding of God and His Word—and His great love for us. As always, she unfolds biblical truth so clearly and calls me to action. Every. Single. Time.”

These thematically linked stories depict a contemporary Gothic world in which body parts are traded for love, wounds never heal, and self-sacrifice is often the only way out. "In this brilliantly original work, Rebecca Brown gives us haunting parables of betrayal and love, of loss and resurrection, of loneliness and solidarity. Like a modern Djuna Barnes, Brown creates a language of telling that is fiercely beautiful and honest. This book is a love story unlike any you have read before. Its subversive and passionate transformation carry the lesbian literary voice onto the 21st century."—Joan Nestle "A dry, witty, graceful—if savage—gift."—Mary Gaitskill "The Terrible Girls comes from one of the fiercest, most potent, original writers around: a bloody flayer of skins, both other's and her own . . . a work of possessed and persuasive visionary power."—The Listener "The Terrible Girls is a powerful account of erotic love which exchanges the comforts of illusion for more complex and less certain rewards."—The Times Literary Supplement Rebecca Brown is the winner of the 2003 Washington State Book Award. Her books, which are all published by City Lights, include: The Haunted House, The Terrible Girls, The End of Youth, The Last Time I Saw You, The Dogs and Annie Oakley's Girl. She was awarded a Genius Award and grant from Seattle's weekly magazine, The Stranger.

Book excerpt: An award-winning author has created his most expansive work to date–a captivating family epic, a novel that moves effortlessly from past to present on its journey to the truth of how we grow out of, away from, and into our parents. “Are we there yet?” It’s the time-honored question of kids on a long family car trip–and Emil Czabek’s children are no exception. Yet Em asks himself the same thing as the family travels to celebrate his parents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary, and he wonders if he has escaped their wonderfully bad example. The midwestern drive is Em’s occasion to recall the Czabek clan’s amazing odyssey, one that sprawls through the second half of the twentieth century. It begins with his parents’ wedding on the TV show It’s Your Marriage, and careens from a suburban house built sideways by a drunken contractor to a farm meant to shelter the Czabeks from a country coming apart. It is the story of Em’s father, Wally–diligent, distant, hard-drinking–and his attempts to please, protect, or simply placate his nervous, restless, and sensual wife, Susan, all in plain sight of the children they can’t seem to stop having. As the tumultuous decades merge in his mind like the cars on the highway, Em must decide whether he should take away his parents’ autonomy and place them in the Heartland Home for the Elders. Beside him, his wife, Dorie, a woman who has run both a triathlon and for public office, makes him question what he’s inherited and whether he himself has become the responsible spouse of a drifting partner–especially since she’s packing a diaphragm and he’s had a vasectomy. Wildly comic and wrenchingly poignant, The Company Car is a special achievement, a book that drives through territory John Irving and Jonathan Franzen have made popular to arrive at a stunning destination all its own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Girl with Nine Lives is a true adventure story—a candid personal memoir describing the first eighteen years of the author’s life, which began in foster care until she was adopted by a hardworking couple of faith. The book explores the author’s experiences growing up on the farm; her struggles learning to walk, run, ride a bike, and the many scrapes (both figurative and literal!) she got into as a daredevil and a dreamer. Born with a serious balance issue, doctors said Stephanie (or Stacy, in the book) would never walk, and should be relegated to an institution. Being given up for adoption left her feeling discarded and insecure. As she is raised by a loving family, and begins to experience victories, the author learns to see her value in the world, eventually finding her calling as a teacher. Faith has a strong presence in the book; Stacy grows in her faith, and comes to realize that God has a plan for her. With a childhood so full of amusing, frightening, and unusual adventures and misadventures, it really does seem like a miracle that the author emerged in one piece. Readers will find themselves rooting for young Stacy’s success, and at times, her survival!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I got the title The Loving, Living Will of God to His People for this book in 1994, and it details the God of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible and the Torah, as he needs to be thought of. I believe that he should be thought of each day, as he has great powers and angels to help him. He has shown them throughout history, and he wants people to build a temple for him. He didn't like the violence on earth, and that was what caused the great flood. Think about it, water. Too much can cause a flood, and too little causes dry land, crop failures, and fires. Is this because of war situations? I don't have respect for any man who creates war. Did God create famine and disease if people wanted war? Today is May 23, 2018. On May 8, I lost my daughter to terminal cancer. I had grieved greatly before this, and I still do. She told me that she is in heaven and the pain and suffering of the body are gone. I think, Was the United States military responsible? We dropped bombs in foreign countries and killed people. Do we lose one of ours to disease? She left two children of three and five with a father, three grandmothers and other people to teach them. Can we teach our youth a better way?
