Download or read book Securing The State written by David Omand and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments recognise that national security in the turbulent conditions of the early twenty-first century must centre on the creation of public confidence that normal life can continue even in the face of threats such as terrorism and proliferation, and of natural hazards such as pandemics and climate change. Based on his own experience in government, David Omand argues that while public security is vital for good government, the effects of bad government will result from failure to maintain the right relationship between justice, liberty, privacy, civic harmony and security measures. His book examines in detail how secret intelligence helps governments to deliver security, but also risks raising public concern over its methods. A set of ethical principles is proposed to guide intelligence and security work within the framework of human rights. Securing the State provides a new way of thinking about the cycle of activities that generates secret intelligence, examines the issues that arise from the way that modern intelligence uses technology to access new sources of information, and discusses how the meaning of intelligence can best be elucidated. The limits of intelligence in enabling greater security are explored, especially in guiding government in a world in which we must learn not to be surprised by surprise. Illustrated throughout by historical examples, David Omand provides new perspectives for practitioners and those teaching security and intelligence studies and for a wider readership offers an accessible introduction to pressing issues of public policy.

Download or read book Faces written by Lucy Miller Murray and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faces By: Lucy Miller Murray Lucy Miller Murray’s novel Faces is a romantic love story edged with tragedy when Angelica’s young husband David is disfigured in an accident. Essential to the story is the different ways in which the two are affected by the event. The tale opens in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a community divided by a river, where the couple first meet as music students. It then moves to Philadelphia where they reencounter each other in graduate school and to Italy where they explore the beauties of Florence but also experience their tragedy. Weaving its way through the novel is the couple’s common love of music, a significant focus in the book springing from Murray’s well-known career in the music world. Retiring from that world has finally given her time to spell out this tale in a poetic language enriched by her many years within it. The story is both personal and universal, making it a novel not to be missed by adventuresome readers.

Book Synopsis Damned Yankee by : Christopher Phillips
Download or read book Damned Yankee written by Christopher Phillips and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathaniel Lyon (1818–1861) was the first Union general to die in the Civil War. Killed at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Missouri, he became the North’s first war hero, famed as the man who saved Missouri for the Union. In Damned Yankee, chosen by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Book in 1991, Christopher Phillips portrays Lyon not as the savior of a border state threatened by secessionist extremists but as an unbalanced, monomaniacal Unionist zealot who purposely—and perhaps unnecessarily—brought war to a fragile state whose populace had voted overwhelmingly to stay out of the conflict. Phillips meticulously examines Lyon’s role in the Camp Jackson affair, his quest to oust the pro-southern governor of Missouri, and his campaign to eliminate the secessionist element in the state. He contends that Lyon’s actions in Missouri in 1861 were congruent with his dogmatic personality and troubled past. Damned Yankee is a complex, often shocking, portrait of one of the most controversial figures of the Civil War and a sobering study of how the faults of men may greatly affect history.
