Book excerpt: THIRTEEN IS MY LUCKY NUMBER is a vividly detailed memoir of a native Pole who was in high school when the Nazis invaded his country. Author Biega worked with the underground to harass the Germans, an activity that culminated in a 63-day uprising against the Nazi occupiers in 1944. It ultimately was crushed because the Soviets refused to help. He was wounded in a skirmish, & sent to a POW camp in eastern Germany. After the war ended, he walked three days to freedom. His language skills allowed him to work as a translator for the Americans & a liaison officer with the Polish army in exile in London. For four years he lived with his wartime bride through the scarcity of postwar London, working & waiting for a precious immigration visa to the United States. When it came, Biega joyfully became a part of a stream of immigrants that worked very hard to achieve success. The second part of this book is a portrait of a growing family in 1950s America, remembering their Polish roots but profoundly grateful for their American opportunity. It's a fascinating look at an aspect of World War II few Americans are familiar with, & a study of how hard work, optimism & luck can bring great rewards. To order Syrena Press, P.O. When we're bad, we're punished. When we're good, we're rewarded. Our scars run deep. Yet we survive, because we have to, because HE teaches us too. All of us are special, we feel it with everything we are. He has us for a reason, but it's a reason we don't know. We've haven't seen his face, but we know that something deeply broken lies beneath the darkness. With every touch, with every punishment, we know it. Then came the day he saved my life, and I saw him for the first time. He released something inside of me. He showed me who he truly is. Now I want him. I'll go against Everything I know to be with him. A monster. My monster. Loving him is a sin, but a sinner I am. I won't stop until I see every part of him. Even the parts he keeps locked deep down inside. I am Number Thirteen, and this is my story.

Book excerpt: The Patchwork Girl of Oz by L. Frank Baum is a children's novel, the 7th set in the Land of Oz. Characters include the Woozy, Ojo "the Unlucky", Unc Nunkie, Dr. Pipt, Scraps (the patchwork girl), and others. The book was first published on July 1, 1913, with illustrations by John R. Neill. In 1914, Baum adapted the book to film through his "Oz Film Manufacturing Company."In the previous Oz book, The Emerald City of Oz, magic was used to isolate Oz from all outside worlds. Baum did this to end the Oz series, but was forced to restart the series with this book due to financial hardships. In the prologue, he explains how he managed to get another story about Oz, even though it is isolated from all other worlds. He explains that a child suggested he make contact with Oz with wireless telegraphy.[2] Glinda, using her book that records everything that happens, is able to know that someone is using a telegraph to contact Oz, so she erects a telegraph tower and has the Shaggy Man, who knows how to make a telegraph reply, tell the story contained in this book to Baum. The book was dedicated to Sumner Hamilton Britton, the young son of one of its publishers, Sumner Charles Britton of Reilly & Britton.

Book excerpt: After a miraculous escape from the German military juggernaut in the small Belgian town of Mons in 1914, the first major battle that the British Expeditionary Force would face in the First World War, the British really believed that they were on the side of the angels. Indeed, after 1916, the number of spiritualist societies in the United Kingdom almost doubled, from 158 to 309. As Arthur Conan Doyle explained, 'The deaths occurring in almost every family in the land brought a sudden and concentrated interest in the life after death. People not only asked the question, "If a man die, shall he live again?" but they eagerly sought to know if communication was possible with the dear ones they had lost.' From the Angel of Mons to the popular boom in spiritualism as the horrors of industrialised warfare reaped their terrible harvest, the paranormal - and its use in propaganda - was one of the key aspects of the First World War. Angels in the Trenches takes us from defining moments, such as the Angel of Mons on the Front Line, to spirit communication on the Home Front, often involving the great and the good of the period, such as aristocrat Dame Edith Lyttelton, founder of the War Refugees Committee, and the physicist Sir Oliver Lodge, Principal of Birmingham University. We see here people at every level of society struggling to come to terms with the ferocity and terror of the war, and their own losses: soldiers looking for miracles on the battlefield; parents searching for lost sons in the séance room. It is a human story of people forced to look beyond the apparent certainties of the everyday - and this book follows them on that journey.

Book excerpt: He’s my sister’s ex. Dancing is the only thing that makes me feel good, that keeps my OCD in check--until I meet Brandon, producer of the TV dance competition that can make or break my dreams. He’s gorgeous and sweet. He even seems to like me. Why, oh why, does he have to be my supermodel sister’s ex? Just don’t hit on the contestants. Jade is totally different from her sister Pearl, who broke my heart. She’s pure passion on the dance floor… and entirely awkward off of it. She can’t stop washing her hands, counting things to calm herself, and won’t even look me in the eye. So why do I just want to kiss her until she forgets everything but being mine? ______________________________ “The Michaels Sisters are so true to life, so believable that you become involved in each of their lives as if you truly know them. Can’t stop reading, and so sad when it’s over!” —Reviewer
