Book excerpt: Virtually all cocaine sold in the U.S. originates in Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA) countries (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia), so the ATPA functions as a U.S. trade policy tool that contributes to our fight against drug production and trafficking. By strengthening the legitimate economies in these Andean countries and creating viable alternatives to the profitable drug trade, the ATPA is proving an important component of efforts to contain the spread of these illicit activities. The ATPA has generated significant job opportunities in a variety of sectors, including cut flowers, jewelry, non-traditional fruits and vegetables, and certain electronics inputs.

Book Synopsis Trade Policy and Global Poverty by : William R Cline
Download or read book Trade Policy and Global Poverty written by William R Cline and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stakes of the poor in trade policy are large: Free trade can help 500 million people escape poverty and inject $200 billion annually into the economies of developing countries, according to author William R. Cline. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential for trade liberalization to spur growth and reduce poverty in developing countries. It quantifies the impact on global poverty of industrial-country liberalization, as well as liberalization by the developing countries. Half or more of the annual gains from trade would come from the removal of industrial-country protection against developing-country exports. By removing their trade barriers, industrial countries could convey economic benefits to developing countries worth about twice the amount of their annual development assistance. By helping developing countries grow through trade, moreover, industrial countries could lower costs to consumers for imports and realize other economic efficiencies. The study estimates that free trade could reduce the number of people earning less than $2 per day by about 500 million over 15 years. This would cut the world poverty level by 25 percent. Cline judges that the developing countries were right to risk collapse of the Doha Round at the Cancun ministerial meeting in September 2003 by insisting on much deeper liberalization of agriculture than the industrial countries were then willing to offer. The study calls for a two-track strategy: first, deep multilateral liberalization involving phased but complete elimination of industrial-county protection and deep reduction of protection by at least the middle-income developing countries, albeit on a more gradual schedule; and second, immediate free entry for imports from "high risk" low-income countries (heavily indebted poor countries, least developed countries, and sub-Saharan Africa), coupled with a 10-year tax holiday for direct investment in these countries.

Book Synopsis US Hegemony and the Americas by : Arturo Santa-Cruz
Download or read book US Hegemony and the Americas written by Arturo Santa-Cruz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Arturo Santa-Cruz advances an understanding of power as a social relationship and applies it consistently to the economic realm in United States relations with other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Following the academic and popular debate on the ebb and flow of US hegemony, this work centers the analysis in a critical case for the exercise of US power through its economic statecraft: the Americas—its historical zone of influence. The rationale for the regional focus is methodological: if it can be shown that Washington's sway has decreased in the area since the early 1970s, when the discussion about this matter started, it can be safely assumed that the same has occurred in other latitudes. The analysis focuses on three regions: North America, Central America and South America. Since each region contains countries that have at times maintained very different relationships with the United States, the findings contribute to a better understanding of the practice of US power in the sub-region in question, adding greater variability to the overall results. US Hegemony and the Americas: Power and Economic Statecraft in International Relations is an invaluable resource for students and scholars interested in Latin American History and Politics, North American Regional Integration, International Relations, Economic Statecraft, Political Economy and Comparative Politics.

This book was released on 2004-06-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "development credibility" of the current trade regime in general, and the WTO in particular, is at stake. The Doha Round aims to reverse the brewing scepticism by providing a reliable engine of trade-led growth and development. The essays in this volume identify the key challenges in this regard, make an assessment of the current situation in agriculture and manufacturing market access and evaluate alternative policy options that will make the goal attainable.
