Download or read book Brucellosis written by Bernhard M. Thimm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: rope it was mainly the states of the northern and centrat European areas which succeeded in achieving the extermi nation or at least the regression of brucellosis. (The origi nal plan to present the conditions in Asia and Oceania, in cluding Australia, in maps as weil, and thereby to achieve a comprehensive worldwide review of the known and as certainable distribution of brucellosis, was not, however, practicable. ) Information available from these parts of the world, especially from Asia, is so fragmentary that the great expense required for the compilation of the map did not seem justified. On the other hand it seemed desirable to collate and document these data which had been ac quired as a basis for future research. It is tobe hoped that, at a later date, when more comprehensive data become available, the Heidelberg Academy will be able to decide to support a cartographic presentation of the occurrence of brucellosis in these parts of the world as weil. Last, but not least, the intensive research carried out by bacteriologists had led to the discovery of new species of Brucella, such as B. ovis, B. canis and B. neotomae. Further types - such as Type 4 of B. suis which occurs in reindeer and caribou - were identified. Though these new species and types, which are undoubtedly to be classed with the brucellae, have achieved regional significance in places, the three dassie species B. melitensis, B. abortus and B.
Book Synopsis Public Health and Infectious Diseases by : Jeffrey Griffiths
Download or read book Public Health and Infectious Diseases written by Jeffrey Griffiths and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-03-09 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging infectious diseases may be defined as diseases being caused by pathogens only recently recognized to exist. This group of diseases is important globally, and the experience of the last 30 years suggests that new emerging diseases are likely to bedevil us. As the global climate changes, so changes the environment, which can support not only the pathogens, but also their vectors of transmission. This expands the exposure and effects of infectious disease and, therefore, the importance of widespread understanding of the relationship between public health and infectious disease. Public Health and Infectious Diseases brings together chapters that explain reasons for the emergence of these infectious diseases. These include the ecological context of human interactions with other humans, with animals that may host human pathogens, and with a changing agricultural and industrial environment, increasing resistance to antimicrobials, the ubiquity of global travel, and international commerce. - Features the latest discoveries related to influenza with a newly published article by Davidson Hamer and Jean van Seventer - Provides a listing of rare diseases that have become resurgent or spread their geographic distribution and are re-emergent - Highlights dengue and malaria, as well as agents such as West Nile and other arboviruses that have spread to new continents causing widespread concerns - Includes discussions of climate influencing the spread of infectious disease and political and societal aspects

Download or read book Brucellosis written by Edward J. Young and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-05-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen brucellosis experts from seven countries discuss the history, epidemiology, microbiology, immunology, diagnosis, treatment, and control of brucellosis in animals and man. Edited by members of the World Health Organization's Expert Committee on Brucellosis, this text is the first comprehensive treatment of the disease since The Nature of Brucellosis by Wesley W. Spink in 1956. Topics reviewed with current references include infection caused by newer species of Brucella, such as B. canis, newer diagnostic techniques, such as radioimmunoassay and ELISA, and newer treatments, such as rifampin and the quinolones. The pathogenesis and pathophysiology of brucellosis is reviewed in depth, correlating the disease in animals with the illness in humans. This volume is extremely useful for clinicians, researchers, and students in medicine, veterinary science, microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, public health, and international health.
