Book excerpt: "In today's economic climate, a growing number of companies expect their staff to work longer hours while increasing their productivity. Yet without providing incentives, it is difficult to motivate people to work both longer and harder. An effectual way to accomplish this aim is through innovative workplace design. However, contrary to popular belief, innovative office design does not have to entail niceties and extravagant features found in offices like Google. Innovatively designed spaces should not merely be an indulgence but also serve practical purposes. The results are an environment that is inclusive of all and attainable for business of any size. The advantages of innovative office design are many. Innovative workplaces result in reduced workplace stress, increased job satisfaction, and greater organizational commitment; thus substantiating a clear connection between the design of an office and the well-being of its occupants. In order to provide an empirical framework for the benefits of innovative office design, Kolano Design, a graphic and interior design firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was comprehensively investigated. The three-tiered research involved (a) an interview with management to gain a detailed background of the company, (b) photographed observation to document the office environment, and (c) survey questionnaires to establish employee demographics and job satisfaction levels. The results of the study indicated that innovative office design positively influenced the way that the employees at Kolano Design felt about the company and their jobs. The participants denoted that the incorporation of innovative interior design in the workplace helped to increase their creativity and productivity. The conclusion is that good design is an investment in the most important asset a business has - its people. Innovate office design provides employees motivation to do more and to do better--confirming that a well-designed space is not only beneficial for employees but for businesses as well." -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Does every one inside the box think the same? No differentiation? No evolving levels? Then too where do those who think outside of the box, go? Back to the original box to go through further iterations? Not likely; after all they have outgrown their box. Like Adam they have tasted the fruit of knowledge and they are banished from the box of Eden. What happens to them? They fall into history and evolution. Each generation reenacts the drama of their thinking birth and emergence from the fetal paradisiacal box. Each one is doomed to further—perhaps endless—development. Each one is blessed and cursed forever with restlessness—with endless curiosity—and with the haunting memory of their original and archetypal release from the box of limited thought. Boxology: Thinking and Working Inside, Outside, and Beyond the Box and the Cubicle offers the answers to these and other questions in the realm of education.

Book excerpt: Nonverbal Messages Tell More: A Practical Guide to Nonverbal Communication offers an active and dynamic approach to the study of nonverbal communication. The study of nonverbal cues and messages is a difficult undertaking, but Teri and Michael Gamble have put together a volume that approaches the field from a variety of perspectives. Nonverbal Messages Tell More bridges the relevance gap by making the text more accessible and interesting to students of all levels. It does so by highlighting examples of nonverbal behavior taken from popular culture including film, television, and broadcast and print news. This volume provides a thorough overview of the classic and contemporary research and theory for nonverbal communication. It contains a number of features, including experiential guidelines and activities that give students better self-insight and understanding of the nonverbal messages other individuals display. At the end of every chapter are a series of follow-up investigations designed to demonstrate mastery of the content and the ability to apply what was just learned. Nonverbal Messages Tell More also presents the necessary know-how for presenting oneself using nonverbal cues that encourage others to perceive you as personable and credible. It leaps ahead of other books on the subject by offering students an engaging, practical, and useful introduction to the study of nonverbal communication.

Book excerpt: In a readily-accessible, easy-to-read format, this book presents useful hints, suggestions, anecdotes and lists that will help you to look within, identify, and ultimately achieve your personal and professional goals. From getting started with the actual physical space that is your office to the incorporation and financial establishment of your practice, to dealing with the most unexpected, unpredictable clients and their expectations and to planning for the unexpected, the answers are here. The straightforward "hands-on" approach makes reading simple, the inclusion of anecdotes adds realism and interest, the quick checks provide instant reminders and cues and the self-disclosure questions aid in self-understanding. All of the suggestions are grounded in practice. Some may be familiar to you already; some may be novel and unexpected. Sometimes, however, simple reminders or hints can be the most powerful and with that in mind, this book was written in an attempt to demystify some of the confusion and/or uncertainty surrounding the successful establishment and functioning of a private practice.

Book excerpt: As the great American boom ends, four men switch on their "bunny-hunting engines" and embark on a wild tour of Manhattan's nightlife. Dot-com may have fallen, but money is still washing around New York. Jim Troxler arrives in the city to meet his younger brother, Martin, a hip dot-commentator. Little does he know that Martin has planned a night out. Joining the brothers will be Big Guy, a weirdly magnetic e-content salesman, and C.C. Baxter, founder of a "formerly huge" online advertising agency. On the trawl from one bar to another, Jim watches Martin and his pals boozing, ingesting drugs, dancing badly, and jostling for hipness. Soon the men have picked up no fewer than five women -- two marketing chicks who speedload their cigarettes, two husband hunters, and the young, naive, and fabulous Zebra Hat Girl. Then, palming cash and talking trash, the group ends up on an enormous party boat circling Manhattan. The boat is filled with hundreds of young, sexed-up New Yorkers -- all ecstatically unaware that in four days the World Trade Center will be destroyed and their never-ending party will be over. But before then -- by the next morning -- Jim Troxler will be changed forever. Howard Hunt's Young Men on Fire is a brilliant portrait of the desires and deceptions that fueled the great American boom. At once laugh-out-loud funny and shrewdly perceptive, it introduces an exciting new voice in contemporary writing.

Book excerpt: Negative self-image. Fantasy-induced overspending. Marital tension. A new kind of airbrushed concoction is wreaking havoc on homes and psyches, and Sarah Welch and Alicia Rockmore have a name for it: org porn. It’s in magazines, coffee table books, advertisements, and TV shows, promoting a perfect — and entirely imaginary — world in which everything is always pristine, serene, and flawlessly organized. Pretty Neat is a handbook that embraces the chaotic reality that lies beneath org porn’s glossy veneer, offering pithy anecdotes and candid advice from experts and real women alike on tackling organizational inertia. Funny, irreverent, entertaining, and helpful, the book covers all facets of clutter-control, from tried-and-true tips for conquering to-do lists and wrangling family schedules to ideas on excavating inboxes, eliminating excuses, and delegating housework. Most importantly, Pretty Neat insists that women need to stop holding themselves to impossibly high standards, and focus instead on defining their own, realistic organizational goals. Full of engaging examples from everyday women, Pretty Neat offers readers unorthodox, surprisingly simple methods to reduce their org porn–fueled stress, insisting that perfection is impossible — and unnecessary — in this messy, unpredictable world called real life.

Book excerpt: What is good acting? How does one create believable characters? How can an actor understand a character if they do not understand themselves? In The Science of Acting, Sam Kogan uses his theories on the relationship between neuroscience, psychology and acting to answer these questions. Practical exercises provide a step-by-step guide to developing an actor's ability, culminating in Ten Steps to Creating a Character. He presents the reader with a groundbreaking understanding of the subconscious and how it can be applied to their acting. The author’s highly original perspective on Stanislavski's teaching gives readers a unique insight into their character’s minds. Sam Kogan studied at the Moscow Institute of Theatre Arts (now the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts) under the tutelage of Professor Maria Knebel.
