Book excerpt: Why Use this BookExcellent patient outcomes is the number one goal for all healthcare providers, including nurses. Nurses contribute to improving patient outcomes through excellent nursing care using abilities such as predicting and managing potential complications and decreasing the failure to rescue rate. To meet the goal of excellent patient outcomes, nurses must learn how to think, specifically how to use clinical judgment. However, before a nurse can use clinical judgment, the nurse must first develop clinical judgment. This book does just that! "Think Like a Nurse: A Handbook" unlocks the mystery of thinking like a nurse by providing a step-by-step approach for developing clinical judgment. All nursing students and nurses can benefit from what this book presents. Finally! A book that teaches how to develop clinical judgment!Who Should Use this BookThis book is written as a textbook for use in all levels of pre-licensed nursing education: LPN/LVN, Associate Degree, Baccalaureate Degree, and entry-level Master's Degree students. It can also be used in all RN-to-BSN programs as students revisit the process of developing clinical judgment then learn to apply clinical judgment in community health settings and management in health care. RN-to-BSN students can also use this information as they work with nursing students or orient new staff in the practice setting. This book is also an excellent resource for nursing professional development practitioners and nurse preceptors as they work with new graduates and new nurse hires to expand their application of thinking as a staff nurse. Finally, this book is a critical element for all students enrolled in Master's in Nursing Education programs. Those being educated as faculty in nursing programs and as nursing professional development practitioners must focus on teaching thinking if we are to meet the ultimate goal of improved patient outcomes through excellent nursing care.

Book excerpt: About: To prepare you for real world practice, this book will highlight content areas most relevant to the bedside and why they must be mastered and understood. To help visualize the professional development that is needed as you transition to the responsibilities of the professional nurse, I use the metaphor of building a house; not a static structure, but a unique, vibrant "living" house that is a reflection of how you choose to build and add to it over time. Nursing is a living and vibrant practice that requires your personal involvement and engagement to promote the well-being of those you care for. The components of this "living" home include: Foundation: A house must have a firm and stable foundation. The ethical comportment or the art of nursing is this foundation for every nurse. Caring behaviors, nurse engagement, and professionalism in practice must be present or your nursing practice could be on shaky ground before it even begins! Walls: The applied sciences of nursing: pharmacology, fluid and electrolytes, and anatomy and physiology. I contextualize these sciences to the bedside so the relevance of mastering this content becomes apparent. Roof: Critical thinking and clinical reasoning, which is the thinking that is required by the nurse that completes the house and ties everything together. Skeletons in the closet: Every house has closets and some have a few skeletons in them! Incivility and men in nursing will be explored in detail!

Book excerpt: Over 150 colleges and universities have adopted the first edition of "Think Like a Nurse: A Handbook" as a required student textbook. These adoptions demonstrate a need for this clinical judgment framework and have motivated the author, Dr. Linda Caputi, to expand the Caputi Method for Learning Clinical Judgment. The overwhelming support from educational institutions is evidence that students must learn a clinical judgment framework as the basis for thinking in nursing today. Older methods of evaluating student thinking that relied solely on students correctly answering questions with the assumption that if they answer correctly, they are able to use clinical judgment, is fatally flawed. Students must learn a framework that is used to focus their thinking, stay mindful, and guide them to make sound clinical decisions. "Think Like a Nurse: A Handbook" was initially introduced and used in the United States. Early in 2021 representatives from Georgian College's new Honours BScN program requested a Canadian version of the book. Lesley MacMaster of Georgian College adapted the book for nursing students across Canada. At the start of that work, Ms. MacMaster obtained reviews of the first edition. Two nurse leaders in Canada graciously agreed to review the book. Their comments provide further support for the Caputi method and for a Canadian version of "Think Like a Nurse: The Caputi Method for Learning Clinical Judgment. "With "Think Like a Nurse: The Caputi Method for Learning Clinical Judgment," students in the United States and now in Canada are learning how to think like a nurse for the end goal of becoming a self-directed thinker who makes good decisions to improve patient outcomes. Book excerpt: Thinking as a Nurse is a point-of-view work gleaned from 37 years of direct patient care and 25 years of teaching nursing. The book emphasizes the non-technical components of nursing practice--the cognitive and cerebral aspects. The primary role of nurses is to identify and solve patient problems and Thinking as a Nurse looks at influences of clinical problem solving such as empathy, what the patient says to the nurse, pathophysiology, nurse-physician relationships, teamwork, and setting priorities. Memorization and an overemphasis on technical skills are discussed as possible pitfalls in the education of nurses. The book helps students study for nursing examinations and be more adroit in their clinical practices. There are chapters addressing studying techniques and how to deal with NCLEX-type questions.
