Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Florence an Interpretation Our field thus defined, it remains for us to conceive clearly what we propose to do in it. The interpretation of art must be carefully distinguished from the interpretation or explana tion of painting, sculpture, and so forth, the special forms of' art. The latter would imply much discussion of processes, mediums, materials, and so forth. To some extent these inquiries are inevitable, for it not infrequently happens that the materials or the processes employed in art have much to do with the choice of themes and the manner of their treat ment. This is conspicuously true of the mosaics, where the building of pictures with little cubes of marble or other material Was so unlike painting, making some things so much easier and other things so much harder, that the ideals of art inevitably underwent serious modification in consequence. We Shall not understand the mosaics or get into sympathy with them, unless we see that their disparagement of per sonality and intellectual suggestion and their emphasis upon splendor and interpretive decoration was largely due to the materials of which they were made and the process which the artist was compelled to employ. It is folly to attempt to make a picture with mosaic or a statue with paint. When we see art developing preferences in subject and manner on account of the materials or the processes in use, we can understand that development only by taking account of these processes and materials. So much we shall try to do, and only so much, and this too in an utterly untechnical manner. Into the maze of studio jargon and studio procedure we shall not try to penetrate. Not only is this a process of enormous difficulty for the layman, itkis distinctly prejudicial to his enjoyment of art. The studio bears the same relation to art that the kitchen does to the banquet. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, not in the cooking. It is not through the kitchen that the guests are taken to the feast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Florence The Object of this book, as its title indicates, is to give not only a general, but also a personal, impression Of Florence, as well as to suggest plans Which may be carried out during a short visit. The great picture-galleries and chief museums are, as a matter of course, Visited during the Rambles, but as so many regular guides and catalogues already exist, it has not been thought necessary or desirable to repeat the long lists of names and numbers in these pages, or to fill up space with detailed descriptions of these well-known collections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notable Pictures in Florence The same desire kindled the minds of the unknown sculptor of the Demeter, now in the British Museum, and Perugino, the painter of the fresco in the chapter-house Of Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi in Florence. They both wished to convey the feeling of the unlimited powers of nature: the Greek artist materialised the spirit of the universe, embodying it in a human form; the Italian spiritualised the material aspect of things by Spreading, as it were, a veil of spirituality over the Visible forms of trees and land and sky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks in Florence, Vol. 1 of 2 Whilst every visitor to Florence speaks in raptures of her beauty, few remain long enough to become really acquainted with her Art-treasures, her historical reminiscences, or the character of her people. It is in the churches, palaces, and streets of Florence, within the compass of daily walks, that we must search for the true history of her citizens. Simple, courteous, yet reserved, humorous and fond of ease, yet proud of traditional industry and freedom, but still more proud of the traditional greatness of his city, the Florentine retains many of the virtues, with some of the defects of his Republican forefathers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophet of Florence There was a movement among the bushes: a youth groping to reach a spot where a knotted clump of cypress on a hillock made a little viewpoint over the far ways. He stood for a few moments, grasping the cypress as if it possessed some living power, at one with the spirit of the place, to guide and direct, with the dumb expectant air of an imprisoned life, waiting for something to break the bars of sense - for the mists to break over the rift of morning light - the vision which, when it opened in its full glory, would yet be but a hovering, mystic dream way - unrealized. The gray mantle thrown carelessly over head and shoulders marked a slight st00p in the figure of the boy as he stood thus silhouetted against the dark of the cypress, while the hood brushed back from his brow revealed, in dark relief, the lights and shadows of a face touched with the world-vision of sorrow of the man. Through the long hour he stood thus, bending further forward in the strain of expectancy, until. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The iron rail traverses, but has not invaded its repose, peaceful hamlets rest on the banks of the noble Loire, which rolls on its course with the stillness of a strong and mighty Spirit conscious of a great purpose. Here commerce recals to the happy, listless tra veller, idling on the river banks, that, separate himself as he may from the world, there are links which cannot be broken, and that even the silent, unconscious river binds man to man, and nation to nation; but here it is commerce in her most graceful form, such as artists love to paint, and poets to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maid of Florence Must drive away the meddling fiend who waits On unemployed hours. Our evil thoughts - Savola. Your evil thoughts, my child - you know not evil - Except a little self-will. But why now, While every maid in Florence, young and old, The fair and homely, noble and the mean - Adorns herself and eagerly awaits The eye of admiration, why should you Her fairest daughter, noble, young and rich, Thus hidden disappoint the longing eyes That watch for you alone? Bianca. But why to-day? This is no festival. What other cause May call them forth? Savola. It is a day of triumph. Our gallant army, by Colonna led, That youthful veteran, with conquest crowned Is entering now the gates: and every heart, That beats with love for Florence, now prepares To grace the triumph of the sons of Florence. Bianca. The sons of Florence! What have they achieved? Say, who has been the hero of the war? No son of Florence, but a foreign chief; The bold Colonna, with a hireling sword, Achieves the laurels of each stricken field; His mercenary band our strong defence, His glory the reproach of Florentines. Savola. You are unjust: although Colonna be The first in arms, yet have our native youth Played well their parts, and should partake his triumph Bianca. They merely did their duty. To have failed Had been dishonor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florence and Northern Tuscany With Genoa The traveller who on his way to Italy passes along the Riviera di Ponente, through Marseilles, Nice, and Mentone to Ventimiglia, or crossing the Alps touches Italian soil, though scarcely Italy indeed, at Turin, on coming to Genoa finds himself really at last in the South, the true South, of which Genoa la Superba is the gate, her narrow streets, the various life of her port, her picturesque colour and dirt, her immense palaces of precious marbles, her oranges and pomegranates and lemons, her armsful of children, and above all the sun, which lends an eternal gladness to all these characteristic or delightful things, telling him at once that the North is far behind, that even Cisalpine Gaul is crossed and done with, and that here at last by the waves of that old and great sea is the true Italy, that beloved and ancient land to which we owe almost everything that is precious and valuable in our lives, and in which still, if we be young, we may find all our dreams. Casa Guidi is a great pile of graystone, a pile of many windows which give upon the Via Maggio and a little piazza, as the squares in Florence are called. Consequently it is lighter and brighter than are many of the houses in Florence, where the streets are nar row and the houses lofty.
