Download or read book The Mecklenburg Signers and Their Neighbors written by Worth Stickley Ray and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1966 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably the finest genealogical record ever compiled on the people of ancient Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, this work consists of extensive source records and documented family sketches. Collectively, what is presented here is a veritable history of a people--a "tribe" of people--who settled in the valley between the Yadkin and Catawba rivers more than two hundred years ago. The object of the book is to show where these people originated and what became of them and their descendants. Included among the source records are the various lists of the Signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration; Abstracts of Some Ancient Items from Mecklenburg County Records; Marriage Records and Relationships of Mecklenburg People; List of Public Officials of Mecklenburg County, 1775-1785; First U.S. Census of 1790 by Districts; Tombstone Inscriptions; and Sketches of the Mecklenburg Signers. The work concludes with indexes of subjects and places, as well as a name index of 5,000 persons. (Part III of "Lost Tribes of North Carolina.")

This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina sent over 125,000 men and boys to service in the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives through disease, accidents, or on the battlefield during the four war years. Previous to the war, death was a more private affair, with family and friends there to comfort the dying and bid him or her farewell. Burials took place in the community in a churchyard or in a selected place where generations of a family lay. But with the war, what would happen to the bodies of their loved ones-fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, and other relatives so far away from home? This book, a compilation of obituaries written in NC newspapers, seeks to answer that question-what happened to a loved one? There are approximately 1200 names in this collection.
Book Synopsis Jewish Identity in the Reconstruction South by : Anton Hieke
Download or read book Jewish Identity in the Reconstruction South written by Anton Hieke and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How far can Jewish life in the South during Reconstruction (1863–1877) be described as German in a period of American Jewry traditionally referred to as ‘German Jewish’ in historiography? To what extent were Jewish immigrants in the South acculturated to Southern identity and customs? Anton Hieke discusses the experience of Jewish immigrants in the Reconstruction South as exemplified by Georgia and the Carolinas. The book critically explores the shifting identities of German Jewish immigrants, their impact on congregational life, and of their identity as ‘Southerners’. The author draws from demographic data of six thousand individuals representing the complete identifiable Jewish minority in Georgia, South and North Carolina from 1860 to 1880. Reconstruction, it is concluded, has to be seen as a formative period for the region’s Jewish congregations and Reform Judaism. The study challenges existing views that are claiming German Jews were setting the standard for Jewish life in this period and were perceived as distinct from Jews of another background. Rather Hieke arrives at a conclusion that takes into consideration the migratory movement between North and South.

Book Synopsis The Civil War and Yadkin County, North Carolina by : Frances H. Casstevens
Download or read book The Civil War and Yadkin County, North Carolina written by Frances H. Casstevens and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the western piedmont of North Carolina, Yadkin County was hardly a hotbed of rebellion at the start of the Civil War. Many of the 1,200 men from Yadkin who served in the Confederate Army did so with distinction, but a number deserted. Some of these holed up in the Bond School House, and when the militia attempted to arrest them, four were killed and several others were wounded. This is a comprehensive accounting of how the county responded to the Civil War and the effect it had on Yadkin's citizens, civilian and military alike.
