Book excerpt: When Tomato Rodriquez's main squeeze, Hooter Mujer, swagers off the fidelity wagon, Tomato eschews passive new age sentiment and instead plots an operatic revenge. Her cunning plan, involving whipped cream, a Bic pen, and some four-by-two goes awry, surprisingly enough, and Tomato finds herself facing a murder rap. "Big House" Gaines became head coach at Winston-Salem Teachers College in 1946. He was not just the head basketball coach. He was the head coach. Period. He coached every sport the school offered -- football, basketball, track, tennis, boxing. He taught in the classroom, too, And all for $2,400 a year. He slept in the men's dormitory and ate discounted meals in the cafeteria. How good were his teams in those early days? About as good as you'd expect at a predominantly women's college whose cupboard of male athletes was bare immediately after World War II.

Book excerpt: As part of the acclaimed Sports Virtues series, "Clarence "Big House" Gaines, Sr.: Respectability " discusses the struggles and triumphs of Clarence Gaines' life. As with each story in the Sports Virtues series, this book assigns a virtue to a celebrated athlete or coach, and uses that person's story to help the reader achieve that virtue for him or herself. What emerges after reading these stories is not only a greater understanding and appreciation of the virtues that these icons needed to get through life, but also an inspiration for the reader. Each story is followed by a small quotation from literature to amplify the meaning and application of the virtue, and each story is also followed by a series of study/review questions and other interactive activities to help the reader further understand the virtue and how to achieve it. This book is for people of all ages, but it makes for the perfect gift from parents to children or from adult mentors to their students. Book excerpt: Have you ever danced on a dead mans chest or peeked into a crypt at a dead mans face? Have you ever soared over a valley like an eagle, only without wings; or watched an Indian Chief in full warriors dress thunder towards you on a great white stallion? How about proving without a doubt that Santa Claus is real, or maybe you have played with a live pacific coast rattle snake with your bare hands? Everyone has their own adventures and experiences to remember as they grow older, and most probably look back upon those memories with fondness. Bubbins was blessed with being born at a time and place in the world where his freedom of movement was virtually wide open, and with parents and a society who allowed such freedom with very few restrictions. When you peer into a mirror-smooth pond, you discover someone there looking back at you. Is it you? Is it who you were-or is it who you are now? Perhaps it might be who you will become. Take this journey with me; let us peer into the Reflections of Time and discover for ourselves the answers to those questions.

Book excerpt: “WE ARE ALL WANDERERS ON THIS EARTH OUR HEARTS ARE FULL OF WONDER AND OUR SOULS DEEP WITH DREAMS” - ROMANY GYPSY SAYING Jakob Smith was a sometimes wild and reckless youth whose passion in life was to travel to new countries. Wherever he went, he was interested in the local history, daily life and culture of the people. During the daylight hours, he enjoyed visiting museums, religious sites, zoos and national parks. At night, contrary to his daytime wanderings, he would enjoy drinking beer and mixing with the local people in neighbourhood bars or restaurants. He would attempt to talk with anyone despite sometimes language difficulties. Frequently these conversations took place in places of ill repute where hookers and petty criminals made up the numbers. They conned him relentlessly but their stories, true or otherwise, were often amusing and worth the few drinks they cost. Now somewhat more mature, he looks back on such times with fond memories. So many people met only once for just a few, sometimes drunken moments, but never forgotten. Despite the odd black eye and a couple of nights spent in lock-up, was it worth it? I must say yes, as if I had my youth over, I would probably go down the same path. The few bad times fade into obscurity, and the many good times, prone to exaggeration, just seem to get better with age. A TRAVEL STORY DIFFERENT FROM MOST, ENTERTAINING, INFORMATIVE AT TIMES, JAKOB QUITE SIMPLY LOVES TRAVELLING, NEW PLACES AND NEW PEOPLE ARE HIS LIFE.

Book excerpt: Medieval knights, Elves, Wizards and Sorceresses are far from the everyday thoughts of fifteen-year-old Jim until an encounter in the early hours turns into the discovery of a strange and enticing world. A world that has always been there, only hidden from human eyes since we turned on its inhabitants during the dark ages of our past, denying their existence and hunting them down in the name of religion. When a beautiful young woman with a secret history and vengeance on her mind returns to the town of her ancestors where Jim now lives, he finds himself drawn into an ancient conflict between her and the Guardians of the Faerie. In the rush to uncover a threat long forgotten, the beauty of this medieval realm and the old-world charm of its inhabitants are thrust aside as Jim becomes embroiled in the bitter struggle between the woman and his newfound companions. His developing friendship with the legendary Jared, lost Lord of Berevane, will give him grief and joy, friendship and a father. He just has to survive long enough to uncover the secrets of the past and preserve the sanctity of the Realm during the clash between his world and Jareds.

Book excerpt: The Big House Anthology is a celebration of the last decade of work and plays by a unique theatre company, featuring five original plays that offer a chance for stories with diverse casts to contribute to the canon of theatre's literature. As a UK-based theatre company, The Big House empowers care leavers and other disadvantaged young people through performance and long-term support. Their plays are born from the hearts and minds of the young people they engage, with this anthology offering five very different plays: a runner struck down by MS; a rapper who spits and snarls and tries to find it in herself to forgive; a teenager who fights for wealth, status and respect in the underworld of county lines; a cackling cowboy they call Corona; and a dog that has been tracked, murdered and stuck in a stew. This anthology celebrates the explosive creativity that comes from mobilising and platforming diverse voices, and its importance in generating social change. Framed and introduced by directors and writers discussing their practice, along with an introduction by Jez Butterworth, this is a book for students, educators, artists, theatre-practitioners, social workers and storytellers to tell stories that are rarely told, let alone with such fierce authenticity.

Book excerpt: Sara Richardson, a middle-aged clergyman’s wife, wakes up one morning with the thought that something out of the ordinary was going to happen. As she carried her coffee into the family room, the thought from earlier almost made her spill her coffee. She was told to go to the window near the front door, and look out. Not wanting to disobey what she thought might be a message from God, she does what it asked. The spot nearest the door was still in the shadows. As her eyes adjusted, she made out what appeared to be a body lying just feet from her door. Not believing what she saw, she closed her eyes then looked again. Sure enough, there was a body! It was an old woman, lying face down, her long white hair spread around her face. Who was this old woman and what was she doing on Sara’s front lawn? Was she alive, or God forbid dead? Follow Sara’s journey as she takes a leap of faith into doing what God asked of her, with no questions asked.

Book excerpt: “A fast-paced story of father and son, packed with misadventures and set against the backdrop of contemporary Jamaica” (Kirkus Reviews). Everton Dorril, a rising star at a Jamaican beverage company, immediately fears the worst when his stepmother calls one morning to tell him his father is missing. Everton soon discovers that his father has run off to track down a woman he has been in love with for thirty-five years. An “outside” child born to his father’s mistress, Everton deeply resents his father and hates the idea of jeopardizing the most important moment in his career to go find him—but feels he has no other choice. His father’s stubborn refusal to return home leads Everton to reluctantly give up a week of work—one week only—to join him on his quest. By the fourth day, Everton is fed up with his father’s lies and excuses. But in spite of his better judgment, he makes one last attempt at a confrontation, and it will lead to revelations he never expected. “The magnetic descriptions of the father-and-son conversations and encounters and the Jamaican landscape add to the narrative . . . Like Marcus J. Guillory’s Red, Now, and Laters, this book will appeal to lovers of Caribbean fiction, but all readers of relationship novels are sure to enjoy.” —Library Journal “It takes a lot to stand out in the crowded field of Caribbean lit, but Garfield Ellis grabs mystery, family, love, hate, longing, and loss, boils them down to a Jamaica we don’t always see, and rises to the top.” —Marlon James, author of A Brief History of Seven Killings “A novel about how children can never really know their parents, about the unique and often strange relationship between fathers and sons, about forgiveness and, most of all, about regret.” —The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

Book excerpt: Symbiosis and Ambiguity is the first English edition of the classic study of early object relations by influential Argentinian psychoanalyst José Bleger (1922-1972). It is rooted in Kleinian thinking and rich in clinical material. Bleger's thesis is that starting from primitive undifferentiation, prior to the paranoid-schizoid position described by Klein, autism and symbiosis co-exist as narcissistic relations in a syncretic ‘agglutinated’ nucleus. In symbiosis part of the mind is deposited in an external person or situation; in autism it is deposited in the patient's own mind or body. The nucleus is ambiguous and persists in adults as the psychotic part of the personality. Symbiosis tends to immobilise the analytic process, so the analyst must mobilise, fragment and discriminate the agglutinated nucleus, whose ambiguity tends to ‘blunt’ persecutory situations. The psychoanalytic setting functions as a silent refuge for the psychotic part of the personality, where it creates a ‘phantom world’. At some point, therefore, the setting itself has to be analysed and the analytic relationship de-symbiotised, as Bleger observes in a celebrated chapter on the setting. José Bleger’s work demonstrates the need to analyse early narcissistic object relations as they arise clinically, especially in the setting. More widely, he regards undifferentiation and participation as operating throughout life: in groups, institutions, and society as a whole.
