Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randall Sumpter questions the dominant notion that reporters entering the field in the late nineteenth century relied on an informal apprenticeship system to learn the rules of journalism. Drawing from the experiences of more than fifty reporters, he argues that cub reporters could and did access multiple sources of instruction, including autobiographies and memoirs of journalists, fiction, guidebooks, and trade magazines. Arguments for “professional journalism” did not resonate with the workaday journalists examined here. These news workers were more concerned with following a personal rather than a professional code of ethics, and implemented their own work rules. Some of those rules governed “delinquent” behavior. While scholars have traced some of the connections between beginning journalists and learning opportunities, Sumpter shows that much more can be discovered, with implications for understanding the development of journalistic professionalism and present-day instances of journalistic behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activated Script Analysis engages theatre students in traditional formative script analysis through a fusion of devised theatre and various modes of creative expression, dispelling the notion of script analysis as an isolated pen-to-paper task and reimagining it as a captivating and collaborative process. This book uses diverse, contemporary plays to model the script analysis process for each of four Theatrical Elements: Given Circumstances; Character; Setting; and Structure. By considering each of these elements, readers can uncover patterns and themes within a dramatic text. Woven throughout the study of each theatrical element are "Connections": Personal Connections, which encourage readers to explore a theatrical element within their own lives, as though their lives were a script; Play Connections, which make abstract ideas presented in script analysis concrete through theatre-based play; Professional Connections, which examine how a theatre professional might analyze a script within their own work; and Performative Connections, which provide the opportunity for students to explore a theatrical element through performance using devised theatre strategies. At the end of each chapter, readers are given the opportunity to analyze a text through the lens of a Theatrical Element and to express their findings through a variety of digital, written, visual, and performance-based modes of expression. Activated Script Analysis is designed for undergraduate theatre students and educators, to be used as the primary text in Script Analysis coursework or as a supplemental text in Acting or Directing courses. The book includes access to downloadable templates and example videos, available at www.routledge.com/9781032125398.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is a transformative work of art. From its initial performance in 2015, this daring interpretation of the life of orphan, hero, and scholar Alexander Hamilton profoundly changed musical theater—and the audiences who watched and listened. Revolution was the subject and the goal. In Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda: A Story Grid Masterworks Analysis Guide, writer, editor, and educator Abigail K. Perry shows us that Miranda’s skills as a storyteller are equal to his gifts as a composer. We see how he brilliantly weaves together story genres, including a complex Love Story, a bloody War Story, a Performance Story, and a Society Story about a world turned upside down—all within the overarching Status tale of a hero’s tragic rise and fall. Join Perry in reading Miranda’s work on multiple levels using Story Grid’s toolkit, and you’ll find yourself understanding how he constructed his masterwork, almost as if you were in the room where it happened. And you’ll gain a deeper appreciation, love, and respect for the craft of writing itself. Open the Guide and discover again why it matters who lives, who dies, and who tells your story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this collection, Shifting the Scene, adapts words from one of the Choruses in Henry V. Its essays try, without denying authority to the text and the theatre, to widen the scene of inquiry to include other institutions, like education, politics, language, and the arts, and to juxtapose the constructions of Shakespeare and his works that have been produced by them. However, as in Henry V, there is also a geographical dimension. The collection goes beyond England and the English-speaking world and focuses on Europe (including Britain). It brings together 17 essays by leading authorities and promising young scholars in the field
