Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A parametric equation of state was derived for water vapor in the critical region. It is valid for pressures ranging from 3000 to 4000 psia, specific volumes from 0.8 V/sub c/ to 2 V/sub c/ and temperatures from saturation to 752 degrees. The equation satisfies the boundary conditions at the critical point. The maximum derivation between computed and measured values of pressure of three parts in one thousand coincides approximately with the over-all uncertainty in Pressure-Volume-Temperature measurements. By utilizing certain concepts in "Clausius Theorem of the Virial" the size of water molecule was estimated as 2.61 A from P-V-T data. This is in fair agreements with other estimated values which ranged from two to five Angstroms.

Book excerpt: Study of the existing thermal conductivity and viscosity data suggests that the Russian work is the most consistent. However, it appears that the empirical equations proposed for interpolation do not adequately represent the data in the critical region. No attempt has been made to derive thermodynamic functions or to analyze the transport data.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to establish reasonable estimates of the values of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of water in the critical region was conducted. This was accomplished by reviewing the literature and utilizing available experimental measurements. The validity of the estimates was strengthened by the use of the principle of corresponding states after other considerations failed to contribute a description of these two transport properties in the critical region. The final results were expressions of a thermal conductivity excess and dynamic viscosity excess as unique functions of density.

Book excerpt: The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) has produced this book in order to provide an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures. These systems are central to many areas of scientific study and industrial application, including electric power generation, industrial steam systems, hydrothermal processing of materials, geochemistry, and environmental applications. The authors’ goal is to present the material at a level that serves both the graduate student seeking to learn the state of the art, and also the industrial engineer or chemist seeking to develop additional expertise or to find the data needed to solve a specific problem. The wide range of people for whom this topic is important provides a challenge. Advanced work in this area is distributed among physical chemists, chemical engineers, geochemists, and other specialists, who may not be aware of parallel work by those outside their own specialty. The particular aspects of high-temperature aqueous physical chemistry of interest to one industry may be irrelevant to another; yet another industry might need the same basic information but in a very different form. To serve all these constituencies, the book includes several chapters that cover the foundational thermophysical properties (such as gas solubility, phase behavior, thermodynamic properties of solutes, and transport properties) that are of interest across numerous applications. The presentation of these topics is intended to be accessible to readers from a variety of backgrounds. Other chapters address fundamental areas of more specialized interest, such as critical phenomena and molecular-level solution structure. Several chapters are more application-oriented, addressing areas such as power-cycle chemistry and hydrothermal synthesis. As befits the variety of interests addressed, some chapters provide more theoretical guidance while others, such as those on acid/base equilibria and the solubilities of metal oxides and hydroxides, emphasize experimental techniques and data analysis. - Covers both the theory and applications of all Hydrothermal solutions - Provides an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures - The presentation of the book is understandable to readers from a variety of backgrounds

Book excerpt: An accurate knowledge of thermodynamic and transport properties of water in the critical region is required in order to analyze future power cycles, nuclear reactor configurations, and other types of heat transfer apparatus. Preliminnry investigations showed that this was rot possible with presently existing tabulations. Experimentel data from volumetric viscosity and thermal conductivity studies were therefore selected and retabulated. Smoothings of these data are described and, for the first time, a tabulation at close intervals of pressure and temperature of the volumetric data is possible for steam in the critical region. A graphical presentation is given of volumetric data from 700 to 750 deg F. An important result of this study was that excellent agreement existed between the many P-V-T measurements for this substance even though some of the data was obtained many years ago. Differences occurring between the tabulated data of various steam tables were found to arise from the use of inexact equations of state or interpolation techniques rather than from faulty primary data. New P-V-T data were derived from measurements of other investigators, by a graphical technique and it is estimated that it yielded pressure values accurate to some five parts in ten thousand except in the subcooled liquid region (for specific volumes below 0.040 ftsup 3/lb), where the uncertainty may be some twenty parts in ten thousand. Study of the existing thermal conductivity and viscosity data suggests that the Russian work is the most consistent. However, it appears that the empirical equations proposed for interpolation do not adequately represent the data in the critical region. No attempt has been made to derive thermodynamic functions or to analyze the transport data. (auth).

Book excerpt: This book forms the proceedings of the 11th International Conference of the Properties of Steam, conducted in 1989 in Czechoslovakia. The session provided an international forum for the dissemination of information on recent progress in experiment, theory and formulation of the properties of steam and aqueous systems in the power industry during the past five years. The papers reflect present knowledge of the thermophysical properties of pure ordinary and heavy water to the properties of aqueous solutions, to the power cycle chemistry, to corrosion in power plants.
