Book excerpt: The need to reduce the ecological footprint of water/land/air vehicles in this era of climate change requires pushing the limits regarding the development of lightweight structures and materials. This requires a thorough understanding of their thermomechanical behavior at several stages of the production chain. Moreover, during service, the response of lightweight alloys under the simultaneous influence of mechanical loads and temperature can determine the lifetime and performance of a multitude of structural components. The present Special Issue, comprising eight original research articles, is dedicated to disseminating current efforts around the globe aimed at advancing understanding of the thermomechanical behavior of structural lightweight alloys under processing or service conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is made of the available information on thermomechanical processing of aluminum alloys, especially with respect to their fatigue behavior. An attempt is made to evaluate from the scarce and sometimes contradictory experimental evidence the possibility of improving the fatigue resistance of high-strength aluminum alloys by these treatments. To do so, it is also necessary to review the important microstructural features and deformation characteristics of these alloys, which seem to control the various stages of fatigue, and which may be influenced by the thermomechanical treatments. The discussion is limited to thermomechanical treatments subsequent to solution annealing. It is concluded that suitable processing offers the advantage of improving both strength and ductility in Al-Cu and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys. If the effects of inclusions can be minimized, significant benefits are possible in fatigue, at least in Stage I crack resistance, by thermomechanical processing.

Book excerpt: The design of aeronautical alloys requires the use of these particular alloys for their strength and ductility. These properties can be further enhanced by controlling the added alloying elements as well as the heat treatment parameters. The objective of the present work was to determine the effect of the interactions between element additions and heat treatment on the alloy microstructure and mechanical properties. The present study was carried out to investigate both the formability and mechanical properties of 6xxx alloy series. The slabs (7 x 11 x 1.5 cm each) were machined and homogenized for 10 h at 520 C, followed by air cooling. The results show that a -iron phase displays low formability and hinders deformation of the grains during cold rolling and leads to premature cracking. The cold rolled structure contains elongated grains with broken -Al5FeSi platelet fragments. In the Mn-containing alloy, the -iron phase is more easily deformable while addition of Sr does not improve the alloy behavior. With beryllium additions, the iron intermetallics precipitate in the form of small, globular -Al8Fe2SiBe script particles, in the interdendritic regions."

Book excerpt: In the fall of 1998, Prof. Sergey Firstov invited me to the Frantcevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science (IPMS) in Kyiv, Ukraine to discuss possible collaborations in the area of advanced metals research. During this visit, a strong mutual interest was evident in a broad range of structural metals technologies, and a quick friendship was established. Countless subsequent emails and a reciprocal visit to the U. S Air Force Research Laboratory by Prof. Firstov and a team of scientists from IPMS ensued to discuss and detail a broad collaboration in the area of structural metals. Two years after the initial visit, a major investment by the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) was established to pursue the technologies defined by these interactions. The annual reviews of the AFOSR Ukrainian Metals Initiative were held in late May, a most beautiful time in Kyiv when the lilacs are in bright display and the air is scented with the smell of falling blossoms from the chestnut trees that line the major streets and many parks. The sunny days and mild evenings provide a welcome break from winter, and on weekend evenings festive crowds spill onto the Khreshchatyk, Kyiv’s downtown boulevard, to listen to street musicians, watch jugglers and comedians, or simply to celebrate with friends. The annual reviews featured long days of intensive discussion of technical progress, followed in the evenings by the warm hospitality of the Ukrainian hosts.

Book excerpt: The book focuses on the recent technology and advancement in structural integrity and monitoring systems in composite materials. Composites have been widely used in automotive, aerospace and wind turbine industries, therefore it is important to develop state of the art technology to monitor and manage the damage tolerance and durability. This book explores the challenge of a monitoring system in a composite and presents a real-time system which has advantages for damage detection, localization, assessment and life prediction compared to the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). It will also present the modelling and prediction of failure in a composite material based on computational analysis of the characteristics and properties of the composite material based on fiber and matrix properties. This book will benefit lecturers, students, researchers, engineers and industrialist who are working in the civil, mechanical engineering, automotive, aerospace and wind turbine industries.
