Book excerpt: This book reviews the mathematical modeling and experimental study of systems involving two or more different length scales. The effects of phenomena occurring at the lower length scales on the behavior at higher scales are of intrinsic scientific interest, but can also be very effectively used to determine the behavior at higher length scales or at the macro-level. Efforts to exploit this micro- and macro-coupling are, naturally, being pursued with regard to every aspect of mechanical phenomena. This book focuses on the changes imposed on the dynamics, strength of materials and durability of mechanical systems by related multiscale phenomena. In particular, it addresses: 1: the impacts of effective dissipation due to kinetic energy trapped at lower scales 2: wave propagation in generalized continua 3: nonlinear phenomena in metamaterials 4: the formalization of more general models to describe the exotic behavior of meta-materials 5: the design and study of microstructures aimed at increasing the toughness and durability of novel materials

This book was released on 1987-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic waves are one of the standard diagnostic tools used to determine the mechanical parameters (volume density of mass, compressibility, elastic stiffness) in the interior of the earth and the geometry of subsurface structures. There is increasing evidence that in the interpretation of seismic data - especially shear-wave data - the influence of anisotropy must be taken into account. This volume presents a method to compute the seismic waves that are generated by an impulsive source in a stratified anisotropic medium. Although written with the seismic applications in mind, the method that is developed is not limited to solid-earth geophysics. In fact, the methods discussed in this monograph are applicable wherever waves propagate in stratified, anisotropic media. The standard approach to this problem is to employ Fourier transformations with respect to time and with respect to the horizontal spatial coordinates. To obtain numerical results, the relevant inverse transformations then have to be evaluated numerically. In this monograph the problem is, in contrast to the standard approach, solved by applying the Cagniard-de Hoop method and by representing the wave field as a sum of generalized rays. With this method, the computational results can be obtained relatively easily with any degree of accuracy, and with considerably less computation time. For completeness, analysis of acoustic waves in stratified isotropic media is included. Furthermore, for large horizontal or vertical source-receiver separations very efficient approximations are derived. Several examples and applications are given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to fractional thermoelasticity, i.e. thermoelasticity based on the heat conduction equation with differential operators of fractional order. Readers will discover how time-fractional differential operators describe memory effects and space-fractional differential operators deal with the long-range interaction. Fractional calculus, generalized Fourier law, axisymmetric and central symmetric problems and many relevant equations are featured in the book. The latest developments in the field are included and the reader is brought up to date with current research. The book contains a large number of figures, to show the characteristic features of temperature and stress distributions and to represent the whole spectrum of order of fractional operators. This work presents a picture of the state-of-the-art of fractional thermoelasticity and is suitable for specialists in applied mathematics, physics, geophysics, elasticity, thermoelasticity and engineering sciences. Corresponding sections of the book may also be used as additional reading material for courses on heat and mass transfer, continuum mechanics, thermal stresses as well as in fractional calculus and its applications for graduate and postgraduate students. Extensive references are included in order to stimulate further studies.

Book excerpt: Aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this book provides a clear unified view of continuum mechanics that will be a welcome addition to the literature. Samuel Paolucci provides a well-grounded mathematical structure and also gives the reader a glimpse of how this material can be extended in a variety of directions, furnishing young researchers with the necessary tools to venture into brand new territory. Particular emphasis is given to the roles that thermodynamics and symmetries play in the development of constitutive equations for different materials. Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Matter is ideal for a one-semester course in continuum mechanics, with 250 end-of-chapter exercises designed to test and develop the reader's understanding of the concepts covered. Six appendices enhance the material further, including a comprehensive discussion of the kinematics, dynamics and balance laws applicable in Riemann spaces.

Book excerpt: This monograph explores the application of the potential method to three-dimensional problems of the mathematical theories of elasticity and thermoelasticity for multi-porosity materials. These models offer several new possibilities for the study of important problems in engineering and mechanics involving multi-porosity materials, including geological materials (e.g., oil, gas, and geothermal reservoirs); manufactured porous materials (e.g., ceramics and pressed powders); and biomaterials (e.g., bone and the human brain). Proceeding from basic to more advanced material, the first part of the book begins with fundamental solutions in elasticity, followed by Galerkin-type solutions and Green’s formulae in elasticity and problems of steady vibrations, quasi-static, and pseudo-oscillations for multi-porosity materials. The next part follows a similar format for thermoelasticity, concluding with a chapter on problems of heat conduction for rigid bodies. The final chapter then presents a number of open research problems to which the results presented here can be applied. All results discussed by the author have not been published previously and offer new insights into these models. Potential Method in Mathematical Theories of Multi-Porosity Media will be a valuable resource for applied mathematicians, mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineers, and researchers studying continuum mechanics. Readers should be knowledgeable in classical theories of elasticity and thermoelasticity.
