Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Turbines: With an Appendix on Gas Turbines and the Future of Heat Engines With the permission of Prof. Mollier of Dresden, there has been added his excellent diagram of the heat contents of steam, exceedingly useful in turbine calculations. A further addition, that may be useful to designers just at pres ent, is the reports of the comprehensive experiments on the many stage impulse turbines of and Ratean. As the author was given full freedom in conducting his experiments, researches of a scientific character could also be made, and we might say that we know more about the performance of this turbine type under vari ous conditions of running than that of any, other system. Book excerpt: The textbook idea and the purpose of class-room use have continually been kept in mind. Mechanical form and manner of working are illustrated by selected, typical examples of construction rational theory is built up, from fundamental concepts to the fully-developed ideal steam engine and actual performance is studied and compared with the ideal, an especial effort being made to set forth clearly and logically the empirical knowledge which must fill the gap between them. Viewing the steam plant as a whole, a line is drawn between the members that have to do with the generation and impartation of heat, and those concerned with its conversion into work through the agency of steam. In other words, the furnace and boiler, with their accessories, are taken to constitute a subject for treatment elsewhere, except that allusion is freely made to their functions. But on the side of the steam machine a comprehensive presentation is undertaken to the writer it appears that the study of the piston engine and of the turbine can most effectively and profitably be combined in a single course. It is assumed that the student approaches the subject with at least a general knowledge of the form and working of the steam plant, and with a good preparation in the elements of physics and of mechanics. All deductions along the latter lines begin, however, with basal facts or principles, so that the book shall be self-contained on that side. In the matter of thermodynamics, which is carried only so far as it is of immediate use and application, a special effort is made to develop concepts and ideas, not merely to build up a mathematical, abstract structure on a few axioms. An excess of mathematics is avoided, preference being largely given to graphical methods. Many numerical examples illustrate and enforce the text, emphasize the quantitative side of the subject, and will suggest problems for classroom use.

Book excerpt: Highly Recommended for : Power Plant Professionals seeking high growth in career Interview preparations for power plant jobs A comprehensive training manual on Steam Turbines & auxiliaries (Non Reheat Type) covering all aspects for thermal power plants. Its a 300 page Spiral bound manual must for every power plant professional. The manual contains text, images/drawings & illustrations. So far the books written on thermal plants describe mostly the reheat type units. These books are intended for technical personnel working in utility plants but, again, most of them deal predominantly with the theoretical aspects of turbines and their auxiliaries and lack in practical side of the subject. The aim is to give following benefits to the reader: To provide an in-depth knowledge of plant and equipment to the plant professionals associated with industrial boilers and turbines. It is to be noted that most of the industrial thermal units (like captive power plants attached to main technological units) are of non-reheat type. To cover the practical aspects of thermal power stations missing in most of the books available in the market. The book describes in details the constructional features of the plant and equipment, their operation and maintenance and overhauling procedures, performance monitoring as well as troubleshooting. To cover the theoretical aspects of a thermal unit necessary to be known to the professionals for thorough understanding of the systems involved. This knowledge would assist them: In selecting the plant and equipment suitable to their requirement In operating and maintaining the plant with best efficiency, availability and reliability The book is a must for those working professionals who aspire for a fast growth of their professional career. It will also be of immense help to the personnel preparing for boiler proficiency examinations. It contains following topics: Chapter – 1 Thermodynamics of a Steam Turbine Chapter – 2 Steam Turbine Fundamentals Chapter – 3 Constructional features of steam turbines Chapter – 4 The lubricating oil system Chapter – 5 Steam turbine governing system Chapter – 6 Steam turbine protection system Chapter – 7 Turbovisory system Chapter – 8 Turbine gland sealing system Chapter – 9 Turbine system and cycles Chapter – 10 Condensers, deaerators and closed feedwater heater Chapter – 11 Main and auxiliary cooling water systems and cooling towers Chapter – 12 Turbine Plant Pumps Chapter – 13 Condensate and feed water treatment Chapter – 14 Turbine Plant Operation Chapter – 15 Turbine Plant Maintenance Chapter – 16 Turbine performance and optimization

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermodynamics of the Steam Turbine, Vol. 1 This is an attempt at a systematic treatment of the thermodynamics of the steam-turbine for students in technical schools. Constructive details are considered so far as they are necessary for a proper understanding of the thermodynamic computations or as they are related to such computations. The methods are in general those that are accepted by steam-turbine designers, but certain methods have been devised by the writer either to make the methods more complete or to provide more rapid and precise determinations of conditions and proportions. Students undertaking the discussion of steam-turbines must have a sound preparation in general thermodynamics, such as is found in any good textbook on the subject; consequently the introduction gives only an abstract of the properties and computations for steam, mainly for convenience and to avoid ambiguity. All computations are made by aid of the writer's Steam and Entropy Tables; other tables or charts may be substituted if preferred. It is to be regretted that factors for frictional and other losses are not better known, but in the end those factors must be related to the steam consumption which is pretty well known, and uncertainty as to the distribution of factors for losses can have only a secondary influence.
