Book excerpt: On September 1, 1989 work was initiated on a project to extend the available vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) model for coal fluids to allow satisfactory predictions of excess enthalpies of coal liquids at high pressures. The available vapor liquid equilibrium model was developed with support from previous grant from DOE-PETC (Grant no. DE-FG22-89PC90541). The current project also involves measurement of some model compound VLE data and chromatographic characterization of coal liquids for distribution of heteroatoms. A computational thermodynamic model for VLE, excess enthalpies and heat capacities of coal derived liquids has been developed. The model uses the modified UNIFAC correlation for the liquid phase. Some unavailable UNIFAC interactions parameters have been regressed from experimental VLE and excess enthalpy data. The computations are carried out using the method of continuous thermodynamics. Mode is used to derive interesting conclusions on the effect of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur heteroatoms on the thermodynamic properties of coal liquids. When compared with limited experimental data available for coal liquids the model shows good agreement. Some progress has been made on binary VLE measurements and size exclusion chromatography of coal liquids.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work on this project was initiated on September 1, 1991. The project consisted of two different tasks: (1) Development of a model to compute viscosities of coal derived liquids, and (2) Investigate new models for estimation of thermodynamic properties of solid and liquid compounds of the type that exist in coal, or are encountered during coal processing. As for task 1, a model for viscosity computation of coal model compound liquids and coal derived liquids has been developed. The detailed model is presented in this report. Two papers, the first describing the pure liquid model and the second one discussing the application to coal derived liquids, are expected to be published in Energy & Fuels shortly. Marginal progress is reported on task 2. Literature review for this work included compilation of a number of data sets, critical investigation of data measurement techniques available in the literature, investigation of models for liquid and solid phase thermodynamic computations. During the preliminary stages it was discovered that for development of a liquid or solid state equation of state, accurate predictive models for a number of saturation properties, such as, liquid and solid vapor pressures, saturated liquid and solid volumes, heat capacities of liquids and solids at saturation, etc. Most the remaining time on this task was spent in developing predictive correlations for vapor pressures and saturated liquid volumes of organic liquids in general and coal model liquids in particular. All these developments are discussed in this report. Some recommendations for future direction of research in this area are also listed.

Book excerpt: This book addresses conventional and new predictive methodologies for estimating thermophysical properties of heavy petroleum fluids. For the unidentifiable fractions forming the fluids, chemical structures are calculated so that property estimation methods for mixtures of identifiable components are now available for such fractions. Chemical and multiphase equilibriums are of utmost importance; hence, the most significant ones involving heavy petroleum fluids are determined and illustrated using advanced equations of state such as sPC-SAFT and EoS/GE. The included phase equilibriums are phase envelopes of reservoir fluids, asymmetric mixtures between light solvents and bitumen including the presence of water and asphaltenes, among others. Besides, heavy petroleum fluids are analyzed from the Newtonian and non-Newtonian viewpoints, exploring their complex rheological behavior. Finally, complemented by online an Excel program for the thermodynamic characterization of unidentifiable petroleum fractions, this book is a useful resource for engineers and researchers in the petroleum industry and is also of interest to students studying chemical and petroleum engineering.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work on this project was initiated on September 1, 1989. The project consisted of three different tasks. 1. A thermodynamic model to predict VLE and calorimetric properties of coal liquids. 2. VLE measurements at high temperature and high pressure for coal model compounds and 3. Chromatographic characterization of coal liquids for distribution of heteroatoms. The thermodynamic model developed is an extension of the previous model developed for VLE of coal derived fluids (DOE Grant no. FG22-86PC90541). The model uses the modified UNIFAC correlation for the liquid phase. Some unavailable UNIFAC interactions parameters have been regressed from experimental VLE and excess enthalpy data. The model is successful in predicting binary VLE and excess enthalpy data. Further refinements of the model are suggested. An apparatus for the high pressure high temperature VLE data measurements has been built and tested. Tetralin-Quinoline is the first binary system selected for data measurements. The equipment was tested by measuring 325°C isotherm for this system and comparing it with literature data. Additional isotherms at 350°C and 370°C have been measured. The framework for a characterization procedure for coal derived liquids has been developed. A coal liquid is defined by a true molecular weight distribution and distribution of heteroatoms as a function of molecular weights. Size exclusions liquid chromatography, elemental analysis and FTIR spectroscopy methods are used to obtain the molecular weight and hetroatom distributions. Further work in this area should include refinements of the characterization procedure, high temperature high pressure VLE data measurements for selective model compound binary systems, and improvement of the thermodynamic model using the new measured data and consistent with the developments in the characterization procedure.

Book excerpt: Very little data is available on the thermodynamic properties of coal model compounds in liquid phase at high pressures. The authors present preliminary compilations of available data. It is anticipated that they will require vapor pressure and saturated liquid density data for coal model compounds in their high pressure liquid equation of state development. These data sets have also been compiled and are presented. They have at this time completed a review of techniques for high pressure density measurements. Some thought is being given to the possibility of building an apparatus to carry out density measurements for selected model compounds. Finally, they reproduce the Thomson et al equation and describe their preliminary procedure to test this equation with available high pressure thermodynamic data. They acknowledge the possibility that a number of modifications of the Thomson equation will be necessary before a reasonably accurate liquid state equation of state for coal model compound emerges.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project is to develop a model for solid-liquid equilibria and a model for viscosities of the products of coal liquifaction processes. The same characterization procedure and representation by continuous distributions as used in previous work on vapor-liquid equilibria and excess enthalpies of coal liquids will be used. Models when fully developed will give the solid-liquid phase equilibrium properties and viscosities as factors of temperature and pressure for known molecular weight distribution and structural characterization of the coal liquid. To accomplish this well, the project requires three tasks: solid-liquid phase equilibrium model development; experimental viscosity measurements; viscosity model development. Preliminary work on testing of the liquid state equation of state of Thomson et al has been completed. Goodwin has compiled data for benzene and toluene and fitted specific expressions so that smoothed data are generated over a large range of temperatures and pressures. The authors have used these data to test the Thomson et al liquid state equation of state for high pressure density and heat capacity predictions. To obtain a liquid state equation of state that will predict all thermodynamic properties accurately, the authors believe that the vapor pressure correlation, saturated liquid density correlation as well as correlation for parameters B and C of the Tait equation need to be modified by extensive regression using experimental data. They have undertaken such a task and results will be reported in a future report.

Book excerpt: Physical, chemical, and thermodynamic properties of coal liquids as a function of boiling range via the pseudocomponent approach are needed for process design now that various direct coal liquefaction processes are being scaled to semi-commercial size. Products from the SRC-II processing of a high volatile bituminous coal were distilled into narrow boiling fractions with average boiling points ranging up to 969/sup 0/F. Fractions boiling below 750/sup 0/F typically spanned a 50/sup 0/F interval, while the others were slightly wider boiling and overlapped somewhat. Liquid density, thermal conductivity and viscosity were measured at temperatures to 450/sup 0/F, and specific heat was determined at temperatures near the boiling point of each fraction. Other property determinations included molecular weight, pour point, elemental analyses, water content and solubility and hydrocarbon types. Both organic oxygen content and water solubility showed a pronounced maximum for the fraction having an average boiling point of 384/sup 0/F. This fraction showed anomalous density and thermal conductivity behavior. A secondary distillation on six different fractions spaced over the entire boiling range yielded heart cuts spanning 8 to 46/sup 0/F that were used for measurement of surface tension, heat of vaporization and vapor pressure at temperatures to 900/sup 0/F. Property data for all the fractions are compared with other published data and existing property correlations.

Book excerpt: This practical handbook features an overview of the importance of physical properties and thermodynamics; and the use of thermo-dynamics to predict the extent of reaction in proposed new chem-ical combinations. The use of special types of data and pre-diction methods to develop flowsheets for probing projects; and sources of critically evaluated data, dividing the published works into three categories depending on quality are given. Methods of doing one's own critical evaluation of literature, a list of known North American contract experimentalists with the types of data mea-sured by each, methods for measuring equilibrium data, and ther-modynamic concepts to carry out process opti-mization are also featured.
