New this year are papers de scribing the development of very large pulse tube cryocoolers to provide up to 1500 watts of cooling for industrial applications such as cooling the superconducting magnets of Mag-lev trains, coolmg superconducting cables for the power mdustry, and liquefymg natural gas. Pulse tube coolers can be driven by several competing compressor technologies. One class of pulse tube coolers is referred to as "Stirling type" because they are based on the linear Oxford Stirling-cooler type compressor; these generally provide coolmg m the 30 to 100 K temperature range and operate ^t frequencies from 30 to 60 Hz. A second type of pulse tube cooler is the so-called "Gifford-McMahon type. " Pulse tube coolers of this type use a G-M type compressor and lower frequency operation (~1 Hz) to achieve temperatures in the 2 to 10 K temperature range. The third type of pulse tube cooler is driven by a thermoacoustic oscillator, a heat engine that functions well in remote environments where electricity is not readily available. All three types are described, and in total, nearly half of this proceedings covers new developments in the pulse tube arena. Complementing the work on low-temperature pulse tube and Gifford-McMahon cryocoolers is substantial continued progress on rare earth regenerator materials.

Book excerpt: Unique cooling systems have to be designed to cool the electronic components of space exploration rover, especially in places like Venus, which has harsh surface conditions. The atmospheric pressure and temperature on the surface of Venus are 92 bars and 450 0C respectively, which make operation of electronic devices and sensors very difficult. An exploration rover sent to operate at an altitude of 40 km above Venus' surface will also need active refrigeration of its electronic components as the temperature can be around 145 0C. Conventional cooling methods are currently deemed unfeasible due to the short life span of moving parts of the refrigerator systems at high temperatures. Furthermore, alternate energy sources such as solar power are not an option on Venus, since the cloud layer consisting of concentrated sulfuric acid droplets is thick and the cloud layer reduces the solar intensity at the surface to about 2% of the intensity above the atmosphere. Therefore, developing alternate method of power and cooling systems are essential for Venus surface operation of any robotic rover. The advantages of using thermoacoustic systems are that there are no moving parts, and they have efficiencies comparable to conventional systems. This work discusses the development and optimization of a standing wave thermoacoustic engine refrigerator system to be used as a cooling device for the electronic components. The effects of various parameters such as gas mixture ratio, pressure, stack material, etc. is discussed. The system designed provides 150 W of cooling power while operating between 170 0C and 50 0C. The surface cooling temperature drop of 4000C is too large to be achieved by a single unit. Hence, multiple units are staged in series to obtain the required cooling temperature on the surface.

Book excerpt: This dissertation deals with the experimental and simulative investigation of waste heat recovery from combustion engine exhaust gas in passenger car applications. The focus of the investigations lies on the thermodynamic cycle according to Rankine. The boundary conditions of combustion engines and the limitations of an automobile cause new operating conditions and system operating parameters for Rankine-systems, which will be discussed within this work. The system operating parameters were judged based on their potential to improve the efficiency of a running system, by setting the optimal values for each individual situation. Alternative circuit variants were investigated alongside of the basic configuration, which allowed additional heat input into the system and thereby increase the power output of the Rankine-system. Another operative influence on a waste heat recovery system that was analyzed was the importance of engine operating parameters. This on one hand lays groundwork and on the other hand displays the potentials of different system combinations. The knowledge gained during stationary operation is transferred to dynamic operation in the following. Cold start was chosen as the most important variant of dynamic operation. Results from measurements at starting temperatures down to -10C are presented. These include the first published measurements of temperature and power output for such scenarios. The basics of the behavior of a Rankine-system in cold start are extended by the impact of system operating parameters and circuit configurations. Possible synergies through different kinds of connection from the condenser to the coolant system were investigated as a completing facet of the holistic system view. The target of these investigations was to identify potentials for improvements in the cold start of the automobile by utilizing the heat that is available at the condenser.
