Book excerpt: This volume is part of a comprehensive review of the thermal radiative properties of air by the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory for the Defense Atomic Support Agency. The review was published as DASA 1917 (Unclassified) in four parts, April, 1967. Most of this material is now being offered in new editions by Plenum Press. The authors and editors hope that it will be more widely available to scientists and engineers who work in the various fields which require the use of high temperature air properties. F. R. Gilmore and A. Hochstim have revised and increased the material presented in DASA 1917-1 in "Equilibrium Thermodynamic Properties of Air" . The present editors have prepared an introduction for the tables presented in DASA 1917-3 so that "Tables of Radiative Properties of Air" offered herewith is essentially self-contained. A few more figures have been added and a number of errors have been corrected. We have also prepared a slightly revised edition of DASA 1917-4, "Excitation and Non-E"quilibrium Phenomena inAir," offered by Plenum Press at this time as a companion volume. DASA 1917-2, "The Radiative Properties of Heated Air" by B. H. Armstrong and R. W. Nicholls is not being offered in a new edition at this time.

Book excerpt: The high temperatures generated in gases by shock waves give rise to physical and chemical phenomena such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions and inherently related radiation. In continuum regime, these processes start from the wave front, so that generally the gaseous media behind shock waves may be in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. This book presents the state of knowledge of these phenomena. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of high temperature gases, including the plasma state are described, as well as the kinetics of the various chemical phenomena cited above. Numerous results of measurement and computation of vibrational relaxation times, dissociation and reaction rate constants are given, and various ionization and radiative mechanisms and processes are presented. The coupling between these different phenomena is taken into account as well as their interaction with the flow-field. Particular points such as the case of rarefied flows and the inside of the shock wave itself are also examined. Examples of specific non-equilibrium flows are given, generally corresponding to those encountered during spatial missions or in shock tube experiments.

We shall now apply the laws enunciated in the last chapter to the special case of thermodynamic equilibrium, and hence we begin our consideration by stating a certain consequence of the second principle of thermodynamics: A system of bodies of arbitrary nature, shape, and position which is at rest and is surrounded by a rigid cover impermeable to heat will, no matter what its initial state may be, pass in the course of time into a permanent state, in which the temperature of all bodies of the system is the same. This is the state of thermodynamic equilibrium, in which the entropy of the system has the maximum value compatible with the total energy of the system as fixed by the initial conditions. This state being reached, no further increase in entropy is possible. In certain cases it may happen that, under the given conditions, the entropy can assume not only one but several maxima, of which one is the absolute one, the others having only a relative significance.1 In these cases every st?te corresponding to a maximum value of the entropy represents a state of thermodyuamic equilibrium of the system. But only one of them, the one corresponding to the absolute maximum of entropy, represents the absolutely stable equilibrium. All the others are in a certain sense unstable, inasmuch as a suitable, however small, disturbance may produce in the system a permanent change in the equilibrium in the direction of the absolutely stable equilibrium. An example of this is offered by supersaturated steam enclosed in a rigid vessel or by any explosive substance. Book excerpt: The thermodynamic and transport prorerties of high-temperature air are found in closed form starting from approximate partition functions for the major components in air and neglecting all minor components. The compressibility, energy, entropy, the specific heats, the speed of sound, the coefficients of viscosity and of thermal conductivity, and the Prandtl numbers for air are tabulated from 500 degrees to 15,000 degrees K over a range of pressure from 0.0001 to 100 atmospheres. The enthalpy of air and the mol fractions of the major components of air can easily be found from the tabulated values for compressibility and energy. It is predicted that the Prandtl number for fully ionized air will become small compared to unity, the order of 0.01, and this implies that boundary layers in such flow will be very transparent to heat flux.
