Book excerpt: The following study examines aspects of the ecology and distribution of an American tarantula, Aphonopelma hentzi . Because these spiders display delayed sexual maturity, are difficult to retrieve from their burrows and have such long life spans, they have not been studied extensively in the field. In addition, there is some concern that over-collecting for the pet trade and habitat destruction may place some populations at risk for extinction. This is especially true along the edge of their range in Missouri and Arkansas where they may be limited to glades. As natural habitats become more fragmented, it becomes increasingly important that conservationists and land managers are well-informed regarding the organisms on their lands. This study has three goals: (1) to closely examine the how and why tarantulas are dispersed in Texas, (2) to determine the distribution of tarantulas in Missouri and (3) to examine the ecology of tarantulas on two glades in Missouri including male mate searching, habitat selection and dispersion. I found tarantulas in Texas displayed no tendency to form clusters or "colonies" and that vegetative cover appeared to be a useful factor for predicting the placement of burrows. Tarantulas can be found from the southwestern corner of Missouri and northwest into Jefferson Co., they seem to be extremely limited north of the Missouri River. In addition, there is evidence that tarantulas in Missouri select glade habitat over the surrounding forest habitats. Mate searching behavior was similar to, but not as extensive as, that observed in Texas.

Why is there not a single book on spider physiology comparable with the many books on insect physiology? Are spiders a scientific ivory tower, far from public interest and commercial importance? I do not think so, although spiders are one of the many "forgotten" animal groups which always grew in the shadow of the insects. There are research groups working on spider physiology, there are fascinating phenomena in this animal group and there are plenty of exciting results.
