Mineral water may be effervescent (i.e., "sparkling") due to contained gases. Traditionally, mineral waters were used or consumed at their spring sources, often referred to as "taking the waters" or "taking the cure," at places such as spas, baths, or wells. The term spa was used for a place where the water was consumed and bathed in; bath where the water was used primarily for bathing, therapeutics, or recreation; and well where the water was to be consumed. Thermal analysis plays a specific role in the identification and quantitative determination of mineral components of rocks. In spite of the fact that minerals were the first group of materials studied regularly by using thermoanalytical methods, the potential offered by these methods is still not fully utilized in the field of earth sciences. The range of thermoanalytical methods applied in earth sciences is rather wide. Most works are based on DTA. DTA data provide indirect analytical information on a material and the quantification of a reaction is limited.

Book excerpt: The first part of this book examines the genesis, occurrence, exploitation and management of mineral and thermal water resources, approaching the subject from the hydogeologist's point of view, but also dealing with engineering and therapeutic applications of water resources. The second part of the book contains case studies of specific geothermal and spa sites in several countries, including Romania, Iceland and UK, written by hydrogeologists with a specialist knowledge of these areas. This section illustrates the diversity of mineral and thermal water resources worldwide, and highlights different international management philosophies of these resources. Mineral and Thermal Groundwater Resources combines a scientific treatment of hydrochemistry, heat migration and geothermics with reader-friendly sections on the historical context and exploration of spa and mineral resources. It is the first book to discuss in detail the two related phenomena of mineral and geothermal water resources. This book will be of interest to professional hydrogeologists and resource managers, researchers in environmental science and engineering, as well as to amateur geologists and historians.

Book excerpt: Mineral Water: From Basic Research to Clinical Applications, written by a multi-disciplinary group of educators, researchers and medical doctors, gathers a timely review on the effects of mineral waters upon several aspects of human biology and pathophysiology, as it gives an overview of how mineral waters may provide a positive impact on different settings, namely health promotion and disease prevention as well as rehabilitation and therapy. A major advantage of this book is the gathering of up-to-date information on the benefits, and associated mechanisms, of mineral waters through different routes of internal and external exposure. Concepts and classifications of mineral waters are disclosed. The relevance of spa therapies in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, otorhinolaryngology, rheumatic diseases and dermatology is addressed. The mitigation of diet-induced acid load by mineral waters consumption and its relevance for bone health is discussed. The importance of mineral waters consumption against metabolic dysfunction through gut microbiota modulation is argued. Modulation of membrane transporters by mineral water is reviewed. Mineral Water: From Basic Research to Clinical Applications aims to target health professionals (medical doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, nutritionists and dietitians), educators and students (in the aforementioned subject areas) as well as health science researchers (biochemists, biologists and pharmacists), beverage companies and policy-makers.

Book excerpt: This book brings together the latest findings on mineral and thermal waters from countries in Southeastern (SE) Europe (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Romania and Bulgaria). Each chapter is dedicated to the most recent geochemical and hydrogeological investigations for a specific country in SE Europe, helping readers to understand the origins and applications of mineral and thermal waters – aspects which are of great importance for the economic development of this region, as these waters are renewable resources, and have been gaining in popularity over the last few decades. Thanks to the region’s favorable geological conditions, it is home to more than 6,000 sources of mineral and thermal waters, characterized by different physical properties and chemical compositions.

Book excerpt: The natural surrounds and resources wrapping hot or mineral springs belong to sustainable matter involving governance and strategic planning of public health, environment, welfare, tourism and mining sectors. Noted it, through the current Brazilian policy demand: social thermalism/hydrotherapy/crenotherapy selected like complementary alternative medicine (CAM) by health ministry law MS 971/2006 (PNPIC), hydro-thermal therapy qualifying DNPM (MME Ordinance 127/2011 and MME 337/2002), health and wellness tourism formally oriented by tourism ministry and environmental management groundwater resources (Resolution MME / CONAMA 396/2008 and MME / CNRH 107/2010). Whereas as fresh potable reserves or potential mineral aquatic strategic deposits, the main biologically active components (BAC) were identified, with their minimum levels needed to related health benefits. Similar to conventional mining prospection, these “cut off grade” detection, at natural occurrences from Brazil, was the major goal in this work. The bibliographic systematic review allowed identify the main bioactive substances (BAC) related to springs sources of elements enougth or proven as health beneficial and at which indications. Wards after, it was performed a georeferenced database with these same variables (BAC) from Brazilian springs. Overlays all through thematic maps assisted in geographical and geological evaluations, whereas, at the end, statistical comparisons filtered target selection at all. The total 60 possible natural BAC and its minimum values for efficacy globally reviewed and established were detected at least one BAC occurrence from 703 mineral springs at 525 Brazilian cities. The arguments utilized were important in demonstrating the abundant and diverse existence of this endowment, where its potential health applications are virtually unknown today.
