Book Synopsis Blade of a Sword by : Matthias Strohn

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the enthralling story of the experiences of the German 73rd Fusilier Regiment, the regiment of Ernst Jünger, author of the renowned Storm of Steel, as it fought through the major campaigns of World War I's Western Front. Combining traditional military history with a trench-level soldier's view of the Great War, this book tracks the experiences of an elite German regiment throughout the conflict, following the men who fought and died in the service of what would ultimately prove to be a futile cause. The German 73rd Fusilier Regiment spent the whole of World War I on the Western Front, and was one of the Imperial German Army's most elite units. Starting with the occupation of Liège, it took part in nearly every major campaign in the West, including the Champagne Offensives, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and the Operation Michael offensives. Using the personal accounts of the soldiers themselves, including Ernst Jünger, author of Storm of Steel, this engrossing story of a regiment at war presents the horror of trench warfare on a human scale, through the eyes of ordinary men-at-arms, as they fought for honor and survival in military history's most brutal theater of combat.
Book Synopsis The Heart of John Wesley's Journal by : John Wesley
Download or read book The Heart of John Wesley's Journal written by John Wesley and published by Counted Faithful. This book was released on 2019-12-25 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal kept by John Wesley from 1735 to 1790 charts his own spiritual journey and the work in which he engaged once converted. These extracts provide an insight into the spiritual ignorance and hostility that existed in his day and the amazing effects of the Gospel in transforming lives. We see the revival that took place as a result of his and others’ evangelistic endeavours and the establishment of Methodism. Wesley’s incessant travels, – covering thousands of miles each year, often on horseback, and habitually preaching several times a day, – make compelling reading. They challenge us too. What efforts are we making to reach the lost in our day, in which ignorance and hostility to spiritual things still exists?

Book excerpt: Photographer Richard Sharum travelled across Cuba to document the lives of isolated farmers, or 'Campesinos, ' and their wider communities at a time of national transition. The histories of these communities have formed the backbone of Cuba, and yet they are rarely depicted in photographic representations of the country. Sharum began researching Campesino communities in late 2015 and his resulting black and white photographs depict the intertwined relationship of people and the land they depend on.

Book Synopsis The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 by : Frederick Engels
Download or read book The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.
