Book excerpt: In response to so many questions to us from family and friends asking about our various recent trips to the UK, we thought it a good idea to put some of our thoughts down on paper in the hope it would prove useful to a wider range of hopeful tourists. Our personal perspective was that we were mature age tourists, interested in history, nice scenery and the usual touristy things, but especially also as motoring enthusiasts we wanted to visit car and aircraft museums and motoring events. We also selected interesting and old pub type hotels with good food and a master plan to be in the bar by 4.30 pm each day.

Book excerpt: Reminiscent of the work of American writers J.D. Salinger and Henry Roth, The Rabbit is Ted Lewis’s (Get Carter) most autobiographical work and an emotionally complex portrait of what it was to come of age in post-war England It is the late 1950s and Victor Graves is an art school student whose father manages a rock quarry not far from their home in Lincolnshire. He is the apple of his mother’s eye, but Victor’s dad thinks his son takes for granted the life he provides. He sets Victor up to work in the quarry for the summer holiday, breaking rocks to harvest flint. It is in the quarry that the thin, awkward Victor meets Clacker. Tattooed and sinewy, Clacker swings the rock hammer all day and by night kits out in Teddy boy trappings for long bouts of carousing. For Victor he epitomizes masculinity. Yet the always glib Clacker refuses to accept Victor. Desperate to prove himself, the sensitive Victor begins to spend more time in pubs and picking fights. Everything begins to unravel after a disturbing incident at work sends Victor on a dangerous downward spiral. Though known best as one of Britain’s most important crime writers, Ted Lewis had the soul of a poet. This powerfully emotional novel is a moving portrait of small town life—the pubs and the people, the workaday life—as seen by a young man navigating through the cultural and sexual confusion of 1950s England.

Book excerpt: “Someday Mija, You’ll Learn the Difference Between a Whore and a Working Woman is a memoir that turns time on its head, circling through terror and joy with eloquence and becoming its own sacrament of resistance.” —Foreword Reviews, 5-star review At eighteen, Yvonne Martinez flees brutal domestic violence and is taken in by her dying grandmother . . . who used to be a sex worker. Before she dies, her grandmother reveals family secrets and shares her uncommon wisdom. “Someday, Mija,” she tells Yvonne, “you’ll learn the difference between a whore and a working woman.” She also shares disturbing facts about their family’s history—eventually leading Yvonne to discover that her grandmother was trafficked as a child in Depression-era Utah by her own mother, Yvonne’s great-grandmother, and that she was blamed for her own rape. In the years that follow her grandmother’s passing, Yvonne gets an education and starts a family. As she heals from her own abuse by her mother and stepfather, she becomes an advocate/labor activist. Grounded in her grandmother’s dictum not to whore herself out, she learns to fight for herself and teaches others to do the same—exposing sexual harassment in the labor unions where she works and fighting corruption. Intense but ultimately uplifting, Someday Mija, You’ll Learn the Difference Between a Whore and a Working Woman is a compelling memoir in essays of transforming transgenerational trauma into resilience and post-traumatic growth.

Book excerpt: Kyle has gone unnoticed for the vast majority of his life and he's always preferred it that way. Homeschooled, shy, and only attending church because he's forced to, there's not really anything outstanding or interesting about him. That changes, however, when he meets James Porter. The two are fast friends, but Kyle isn't sure if that's a good thing or not. While some of the experiences resulting from their friendship are grand, many other experiences leave Kyle broken, angry, and depressed. Is Kyle's friendship with James really such a good thing, or would he have been better off if he'd simply remained the quiet, lonely boy that no one seemed to notice?

Book excerpt: This is a Salinger, "Catcher in the Rye," type of story of a 12-year-old boy sent away from his home in Chicago, to live on a farm up in Wisconsin, with his Great-Grandmother--who he's only met once--which was enough. Also, of course, there's husband #4, an ex-sheriff, with his two young girls--one's a knockout, and the other can knock you out. And then there's slick Eddie, turned 17 and going into the Navy. Yeah, World War II is on, but 'Hey!' it's on the other side of the world. And then there's mean Ah-lex, the hired hand. He'll chew you up with or without salt and pepper just for kicks. But next week Richard gets out of Montifiore--which isn't a reform school but you have to be bad to get in. So he's coming up. And get this: he's my uncle even though he's only a year older than me. But, of course, I never-ever call him: Uncle Richard--unless he twists my arm into a pretzel. And then there was the 'haying' during a heatwave; 90's day-in and day-out under a blistering sun. The trick was to park your brain outside your body. Then when the rain finally came it forgot to leave. The creek became a river, and the river became a lake, and the lake an ocean with the cows trapped on the other side. And if cows don't get milked they explode or something. And there goes the farm. So we converted a sled into a raft and that took care of Ah-lex. I got dragged along by some barbed wire and ended up floating down the river in an inner tube at the mercy of the Demons. And that was just the beginning...
