Book excerpt: There are Those is the story of a strong-willed young woman whose ideas were ahead of her time. She was born in Alabama in the 1800s when women were treated like possessions. They were sometimes victims of abuse without recourse. They had no say, could not vote, own property, nor work outside their homes without the permission from a man. They were subjected to the rule of fathers, husbands, brothers, and male employers, if they were fortunate enough to gain employment. The main character, Evinaida Corbitt, fought to change these conditions. She joins a group called the Suffragettes. Their aim is to gain suffrage for women. In addition to the female equality struggle, she was also born a mulatto which brought on another type of discrimination. She is proud of her family and thinks they are the best there is. Her heart is broken when she becomes aware of her grandfathers true feelings, and his sagacious actions. When family secrets and deceptions are revealed, they prove to add to the burden and hurt this young woman bears. Still, truth is resurrected from a grave of lies and Evinaida becomes aware of the skeletons in the closet. Irregardless, there are those who know what they are to accomplish and set about getting the job done, no matter what the costs. These are most often forerunners, as was Evinaida.

Book excerpt: But all the kids are wearing them! Any child who has ever craved something out of reach will relate to this warm, refreshingly realistic story. Features an audio read-along. "I have dreams about those shoes. Black high-tops. Two white stripes." All Jeremy wants is a pair of those shoes, the ones everyone at school seems to be wearing. But Jeremy’s grandma tells him they don’t have room for "want," just "need," and what Jeremy needs are new boots for winter. When Jeremy’s shoes fall apart at school, and the guidance counselor gives him a hand-me-down pair, the boy is more determined than ever to have those shoes, even a thrift-shop pair that are much too small. But sore feet aren’t much fun, and Jeremy comes to realize that the things he has -- warm boots, a loving grandma, and the chance to help a friend -- are worth more than the things he wants.

Book excerpt: Everyone has friends or family who suffer from sickness, disability, depression, or the death of a loved one. Often times, the people who love the hurting also struggle in their own unique ways. They tend to suffer in silence and without much support from others. Writing from the unique perspective of one who needs extra help on a daily basis, Dave Furman offers insight into the support, encouragement, and wisdom that people need when helping others. Furman draws on his own life experiences, examples from the Bible, and wisdom from Christians throughout history to address the heart and ministry of those who are called to serve others. Deeply personal and powerfully pastoral, this book points readers to the strength that only God can provide as they love those who are hurting. Afterword written by Gloria Furman, the author's wife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Yes you have beaten us; you had the best guns, but we have the best men...But we’ll fight again in two or three years’ time." – Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande (who led the Zulu at Rorke’s Drift) On 22 January 1879, during the final hour of the Battle of Isandlwana – one of the greatest disasters ever to befall British troops during the Victorian era – a very different story was about to unfold a few miles away at the mission station of Rorke’s Drift. A Zulu force of more than 3,000 warriors had turned their attention to the small outpost, defended by around 150 British and Imperial troops. The odds of the British surviving were staggeringly low. The British victory that ensued, therefore, would go down as one of the most heroic actions of all time, and has fascinated military history enthusiasts for decades. In this classic work, Anglo-Zulu War experts Lee Stevenson, Alan Baynham-Jones and Ian Knight examine a wide range of personal testimonies from those present at Rorke’s Drift, while also presenting a clear overview of the battle in its entirety. By reading this account, readers will gain an impressive, unique breadth of knowledge about one of the most epic battles in British history. This updated edition includes even more first-person accounts from the combatants on both the British and Zulu sides. Providing personal, microscopic accounts of events, while at the same time presenting a clear overview of the battle in its entirety, this second volume completes the collection of accounts of the defenders of Rorke’s Drift and also includes contemporary accounts of those who saw the immediate aftermath of the battle.

The authors examine a key community-based cooperative in Botswana that was launched in the early 1970s, and is hailed as a model for development and social change. With little formal education, virtually no job experience, still working their own agricultural lands, and many as single mothers, the co-op workers have maintained their business for over twenty-five years. Equal Sharesis written in different voices, and tells the story of the defining moments in the lives of the Oodi Weavers. As the workers weave their village stories into the tapestries, the book weaves a story that depicts their evolving collective experience. It's a model of community action. Inspiring reading for all those fighting to take control of their economic lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Allied bombing of Berlin was the longest and most sustained bombing offensive against one target in the Second World War. The Berlin Blitz By Those Who Were There is a compelling, gripping and thought-provoking story of the Allied bombing forces and the ordinary people on the ground, told in their own tongue and with meticulous attention to detail. The result is a coherent, single story which unfolds in a straightforward and incisive narrative. This work draws attention in some detail to the major raids on the Reich capital by RAF Bomber Command from the late summer of 1940 to September 1943. It begins with the reliable but largely ineffective twin-engined Blenheims, Hampdens, Wellingtons and Whitleys, through to the introduction into front-line service of the four-engined ‘heavies’ - the Stirling, Manchester and Halifax, which bore the brunt of the bomber offensive until the advent of the incomparable Avro Lancaster in 1942 and the superlative Mosquito. On 30 January 1943, on the tenth anniversary of Hitler’s usurpation of power, two formations (each of three Mosquitoes) appeared over Berlin in daylight and interrupted large rallies being addressed by Goering and Goebbels. Sir Arthur Harris, Commander-in-Chief, RAF Bomber Command, hoped to ‘wreck Berlin from end to end’ and ‘produce a state of devastation in which German surrender is inevitable’. But the ‘Big City’, as it was known to his faithful ‘old lags’, was never completely destroyed.
