Book excerpt: Alternatives to Democracy in Twentieth-Century Europe examines the historical examples of Soviet Communism, Italian Fascism, German Nazism, and Spanish Anarchism, suggesting that, in spite of their differences, they had some key features in common, in particular their shared hostility to individualism, representative government, laissez faire capitalism, and the decadence they associated with modern culture. But rather than seeking to return to earlier ways of working these movements and regimes sought to design a new future – an alternative future – that would restore the nation to spiritual and political health. The Fascists, for their part, specifically promoted palingenesis, which is to say the spiritual rebirth of the nation. The book closes with a long epilogue, in which Ramet defends liberal democracy, highlighting its strengths and advantages. In this chapter, the author identifies five key choke points, which would-be authoritarians typically seek to control, subvert, or instrumentalize: electoral rules, the judiciary, the media, hate speech, and surveillance, and looks at the cases of Viktor Orbán’s Hungary, Jarosław Kaczyński’s Poland, and Donald Trump’s United States.

The book covers the full range of issues associated with agrochemical use from a One Health standpoint to promote a cleaner and safer alternative that leaves little to no negative legacy on Earth’s natural, social, and economic systems. The main focus of the book is to address the biodiversity and human health, food security, and socio-environmental implications of agrochemical use in food production. It deals with the need to move away from the use of harmful chemicals in agriculture. The threat to key aspects of One Health will be used as evidence in support of the need to transition to safer and cleaner food production systems as well as the social, economic, health, and environmental viability of sustainable alternatives. One Health is the innovative convergence approach that encourages collaborative, cross-sectoral, and transdisciplinary methods to monitor, assess, report, and implement shared human health, biodiversity, and environmental challenges and goals such as agrochemical use. Conventional agrochemicals are chemicals used to protect plants, improve crop yield and manage agricultural fields but also have a negative legacy on Earth’s systems. This book is of interest and useful to agricultural trainees and trainers, soil, food and agricultural institutes, food and soil systems specialists, biodiversity and environmental managers, activists, practitioners, and students. It is also a useful read for conservationists and industries interested in promoting organic agriculture for a sustainable community, regional and global development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s generative grammar recognized that functional material is able to project syntactic structure in conformity with the X-bar-format. This insight soon led to a considerable increase in the inventory of functional projections. The basic idea behind this line of theorizing, which goes by the name of cartography, is that sentence structure can be represented as a template of linearly ordered positions, each with their own syntactic and semantic import. In recent years, however, a number of problems have been raised for this approach. For example, certain combinations of syntactic elements cannot be linearly ordered. In light of such problems a number of alternative accounts have been explored. Some of them propose a new (often interface-related) trigger for movement, while others seek alternative means of accounting for various word order patterns. These alternatives to cartography do not form a homogeneous group, nor has there thus far been a forum where these ideas could be compared and confronted with one another. This volume fills that gap. It offers a varied and in-depth view on the position taken by a substantial number of researchers in the field today on what is presumably one of the most hotly debated and controversial issues in present-day generative grammar.

Book excerpt: The U.S. military has a stockpile of approximately 400,000 tons of excess, obsolete, or unserviceable munitions. About 60,000 tons are added to the stockpile each year. Munitions include projectiles, bombs, rockets, landmines, and missiles. Open burning/open detonation (OB/OD) of these munitions has been a common disposal practice for decades, although it has decreased significantly since 2011. OB/OD is relatively quick, procedurally straightforward, and inexpensive. However, the downside of OB and OD is that they release contaminants from the operation directly into the environment. Over time, a number of technology alternatives to OB/OD have become available and more are in research and development. Alternative technologies generally involve some type of contained destruction of the energetic materials, including contained burning or contained detonation as well as contained methods that forego combustion or detonation. Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions reviews the current conventional munitions demilitarization stockpile and analyzes existing and emerging disposal, treatment, and reuse technologies. This report identifies and evaluates any barriers to full-scale deployment of alternatives to OB/OD or non-closed loop incineration/combustion, and provides recommendations to overcome such barriers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, the International Conference on Afghan Alternatives brought together a small but diverse group of scholars and officials to discuss at length and in depth the issues raised by the tragic conflict that continues between the overwhelming majority of the Afghan people and the Soviet invaders since December 1979. In "Afghan Alternatives, "the participants have expanded and updated their conference remarks to illuminate the issues, present policy options, and offer wide-ranging and provocative solutions to the Afghan conflict, which they all view as a dangerous and illegitimate use of force by the Soviet Union. "Afghan Alternatives "answers these questions: Why did the Soviet Union invade Afghanistan? What options do they have now? What are the long-term strategic dangers for the region should the Soviets be allowed to absorb Afghanistan? What is the effect of Islamic ideology on the conflict? What are the security and political aspects of Afghan refugees in Pakistan? What are the broader aspects of the relationship of the Afghan resistance to the international order? What international developments could help resolve the conflict? What is the role of the international community in providing aid to Afghanistan? How does this conflict affect Pakistani-Afghan relations? "Contents and Contributors: "Ralph Magnus, "Introduction"; Jiri Valenta, "Soviet Aims, Policies, and Alternatives in Afghanistan"; Eden Naby, "The Afghan Resistance Movement"; Marvin G. In a post-apocalyptic world, four men and one woman are all that remain of the human race, brought to near extinction by an artificial intelligence. Programmed to wage war on behalf of its creators, the AI became self-aware and turned against humanity. The five survivors are prisoners, kept alive and subjected to brutal torture by the hateful and sadistic machine in an endless cycle of violence. This story and six more groundbreaking and inventive tales that probe the depths of mortal experience prove why Grand Master of Science Fiction Harlan Ellison has earned the many accolades to his credit and remains one of the most original voices in American literature. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream also includes “Big Sam Was My Friend,” “Eyes of Dust,” “World of the Myth,” “Lonelyache,” Hugo Award finalist “Delusion for a Dragon Slayer,” and Hugo and Nebula Award finalist “Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes.”

Book excerpt: Since the world economic crisis of 2007, commentators have pointed to the dangers of a capitalistic system that seems incapable of delivering sustainable growth and well-being. This bold new book offers an exhaustive diagnosis of global capitalism across the world’s nations. David Lane examines the nature and appeal of neoliberal capitalism according to different schools of thought, and he analyses proposals for its reform and replacement from state socialism and social democratic corporatism to self-sustaining networks. Looking ahead to a novel system of economic and political coordination based on a combination of market socialism and state planning, this book offers crucial insights for scholars thinking about alternatives to capitalism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a rough entry into the interdisciplinary field of Infranomics. It enables better decision making in an increasing ambiguous, complex, emergent, interdependent, and uncertain world where we attempt to anticipate modern society trends and patterns in order to react appropriately. However, as with any emerging discipline, much research is needed at the applications and conceptual level. The applications level may require development and testing of methods, tools, and techniques to enable analysis and decision-making in ambiguous, complex, emergent, interdependent, and uncertain conditions while the conceptual level may require taping into driving philosophies, theories, and methodologies that form the basis for Infranomics. Striking the right balance between applications and conceptual foundation (theory) requires rigorous research. This book provides a springboard for robust discussions on applications, theory, and transformation of current thinking to better deal with modern society’s problematic issues using Infranomics.
