Book excerpt: Excerpt from Therapeutics of Dry Hot Air It is with deep gratification that the writer has noted the progress in therapeutic popularity which dry hot air has made during the nine years which have elapsed since the last edition of this book was published. The development and establishment upon a sound, logical basis of this remedial measure have occupied his attention and effort in very large degree during the past fifteen years, and when he was called upon to prepare a third edition of this treatise he felt that his labors were thereby demonstrated to have begun to bear fruit of some material value. A chapter upon the incandescent electric light has been added in this edition because of the growing popularity of this therapeutic agent. We do not approve of substituting this treatment for the body dry hot air treatment, but there is some reason to believe that the local incandescent electric light application may ultimately displace the local dry hot air application in some local pathological conditions. The contributions to medical science since the last edition was published, which have been most significant as far as thermaerotherapy is concerned, are those touching the bacteriology and therapy of infection. These have illuminated many problems connected with this subject, the monumental work of Sir Almroth Wright in particular ("Studies on Immunization") elucidating the rationale of the wonderful effects frequently producible with dry hot air, in a gratifying manner. The book has been largely rewritten so as to embody and conform to these advances in knowledge which, the writer hopes will obtain for this revision the same pleasant reception which has been accorded to the earlier editions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Bath, With a History of Hydro-Therapeutics and of the Hot-Air Bath From the Earliest Ages IN 1856, the late Dr. Barter established in Ireland the first Hot Air Bath that had existed in Western Europe since the retirement of the Romans from Britain. In 1868, when this work was published, the Bath had been in Operation for twelve years, but its progress still continued to be seriously impeded by the unreasoning opposition of public prejudice, and the equally unscientific hostility of Medical Opinion to which, from its establishment, it had been exposed.
