Download or read book Theosophy written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2004 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late nineteenth century, the Theosophical Society has been a central force in the movement now known as the New Age. Just as the Communist Party was considered 'old hat' by peace activists in the '60s, so the Theosophical Society was looked upon by many in the 'spiritual revolution' of those years as cranky, uninteresting, and passé. But the Society, like the Party, was always there, and-despite its relatively few members-always better organized than anybody else. Since then, the Society's influence has certainly not waned. It plays an important role in today's global interfaith movement, and, since the flowering of the New Age in the '70s, has established increasingly intimate ties with the global elites. And its various spinoffs, such as Elizabeth Clare Prophet's Summit Lighthouse, and Benjamin Crème's continuing attempt to lead a 'World Teacher Maitreya' onto the global stage-just as the Society tried to do in the last century with Krishnamurti-continue to send waves through the sea of 'alternative' spiritualities. Guénon shows how our popular ideas of karma and reincarnation actually owe more to Theosophy than to Hinduism or Buddhism, provides a clear picture of the charlatanry that was sometimes a part of the Society's modus operandi, and gives the early history of the Society's bid for political power, particularly its role as an agent of British imperialism in India. It is fitting that this work should finally appear in English just at this moment, when the influence of pseudo-esoteric spiritualities on global politics is probably greater than ever before in Western history.

Book Synopsis Yeats and Theosophy by : Ken Monteith
Download or read book Yeats and Theosophy written by Ken Monteith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When H. P. Blavatsky, the controversial head of the turn of the century movement Theosophy, defined "a true Theosophist" in her book The Key to Theosophy, she could have just as easily have been describing W. B. Yeats. Blavatsky writes, "A true Theosophist must put in practice the loftiest moral ideal, must strive to realize his unity with the whole of humanity, and work ceaselessly for others." Although Yeats joined Blavatsky's group in 1887, and subsequently left to help form The Golden Dawn in 1890, Yeats's career as poet and politician were very much in line with the methods set forth by Blavatsky's doctrine. My project explores how Yeats employs this pop-culture occultism in the creation of his own national literary aesthetic. This project not only examines the influence theosophy has on the literary work Yeats produced in the late 1880's and 1890's, but also Yeats's work as literary critic and anthology editor during that time. While Yeats uses theosophy's metaphysical world view to provide an underlying structure for some of his earliest poetry and drama, he uses theosophy's methods of investigation and argument to discover a metaphysical literary tradition which incorporates all of his own literary heroes into an Irish cultural tradition. Theosophy provides a methodology for Yeats to argue that both Shelley and Blake (for example) are part of a tradition that includes himself. Basing his argument in theosophy, Yeats can argue that the Irish people are a distinct race with a culture more "sincere" and "natural" than that of England.

Book excerpt: Keats stands as a prophetic precursor behind much in today's radical attempts at cultural and self-transformation. But this side of him has been forgotten, or at least was never taken very seriously. He is remembered, if at all, mostly as a Romantic poet whose value and standing was magnified by his early death. Eclipsed by the lushly sensuous affection of his poems, the real meaning of his life and the greatness of his achievement in poetics--how one makes sense out of experience--has been ignored. Now Andrés Rodríguez redresses the balance by granting to Keats' Letters their huge intellectual and spiritual labor. In these Letters, one of the most inspiritng spiritual documents of the West, we see the poet forming and transfroming a passionate life of great joys and sorrows into a self of imagination and power. Book of the Heart grasps the core of Keats' poetical practice of life, uncovering the path of knowledge that the Letters reveal. United with Keats in an imaginative union that is as moving as it is true, Rodríguez presents Keats as a hero of the heart, whose deep life experience oriented him in a unique way toward the world of love, suffering, death, and creativity.
Download or read book Theosophy written by Rudolf Steiner and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 2013-05-17 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given his energetic involvement in practical initiatives and extensive lecturing, Rudolf Steiner had little time to write books. Of those he did write - belonging almost entirely to the earlier years of his work - four titles form an indispensable introduction to his later teaching: Knowledge of the Higher Worlds, Occult Science, The Philosophy of Freedom and Theosophy. Theosophy focuses on a psychology based not on the usual duality of body and mind, but on the more ancient division of body, soul and spirit. Steiner describes in detail the functions and organs of these three aspects of the human being, and the objective realms to which they belong. Just as the body derives from and belongs to the material world, so do the human soul and spirit belong to their own specific realms. These are the dimensions through which all human beings travel in the life after death, and in which - after passing the 'midnight hour' - we prepare to seek our destiny, or karma, in a new life. Theosophy features one of the most comprehensive and condensed of all Steiner's accounts of these realms, and of the experiences which our immortal being undergoes in passing through them. The book ends with a chapter on the modern 'path of knowledge', in which Steiner describes the exercises through which every person may develop the latent powers of perception which are necessary for a knowledge of metaphysical worlds.

Book Synopsis A Textbook of Theosophy by : Charles Webster Leadbeater
Download or read book A Textbook of Theosophy written by Charles Webster Leadbeater and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theosophy is an esoteric course of study that resides at the crossroads of philosophy, religion, and science. This expository work, by renowned spiritual adept Charles W. Leadbeater and first published in 1912, is a succinct, practical description of the movement, which is, at its base, a study of Truth. Leadbeater, having been thoroughly educated within a number of schools of religious thought, is a uniquely qualified guide who leads the reader through the challenging field of Theosophy, with but one goal in mind: To serve humanity by showing all students the way to be one with the divine energy of God. English clergyman turned spiritualist CHARLES WEBSTER LEADBEATER (1854-1934) was ordained as an Anglican priest, but later joined the prominent Theosophical Society and traveled to India to study alternative spiritual and occult practices, eventually settling into his life as a clairvoyant and author. His other works include Man Visible and Invisible and The Science of the Sacrament.
