Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of Materials: A d104-Book for Engineers and Architects The subjects commonly called respectively the Strength of Materials and the Theory of Structures have much in common; much of the subject matter contained in the author's books upon the latter subject has, therefore, been incorporated, the same general method involving the use and application of graphical methods in preference to purely mathematical methods having been adopted in the other branches of the subject. An attempt has been made to present more clearly than is general the various theories as to the cause of failure in materials and the effect of these theories upon design. Although the author hopes that the book will be especially useful for students reading for the Assoc. M. Inst. 0. E., and University degree examinations in Engineering, he has attempted to present the subject in sufficiently practical form for it to be of greater assistance in practical design than is the case with an ordinary class book; with this in view many diagrams and tables have been incorporated for. Enabling the formulae to be applied with a minimum of time and trouble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials It may be said, in a general way, that when designing machinery the designer must take into consideration two main factors. One is to so design the mechanism mechanically that the various motions required can be obtained by means of the machine. The other is to so proportion the parts that they will be strong enough to do the work for which they are intended Without breakage and, in most cases, without distortion. A third factor also enters prominently into the design, that Iof_so designing a machine that the various parts can be easily manufactured, but this last factor, while commercially fully as important as the other two, has not a direct bearing upon the actual working of the completed mechanism. The subject that will be dealt with in this Reference Book relates to the second of the two main questions affecting the design, that of proportioning the parts so that they will be strong enough to properly do the work for which they are intended. This problem, in turn, may be divided into two sections, one of which deals with the determining of the forces which act upon a machine part, tending to. Break or distort it, and the determination of the actual proportions necessary to resist these forces. The science of determining the forces acting upon a machine part or, in general, upon an engineering structure, is termed mechanics, this word being used in its more limited sense, often referred to as theoretical mechanics. The problem of actually determining the dimensions of details of machines or structures with regard to their strength is covered by that part of mechanical knowl edge which is known as the strength of materials. It should be under stood, however, that the question of determining the forces acting upon an engineering structure or machine and the determination of the actual dimensions and materials required to resist these forces, are so closely connected that in dealing with the strength of materials we must also deal, to a very large extent, with the mechanical theory of forces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strength of materials is that branch of engineering concerned with the deformation and disruption of solids when forces other than changes in position or equilibrium are acting upon them. The development of our understanding of the strength of materials has enabled engineers to establish the forces which can safely be imposed on structure or components, or to choose materials appropriate to the necessary dimensions of structures and components which have to withstand given loads without suffering effects deleterious to their proper functioning. This excellent historical survey of the strength of materials with many references to the theories of elasticity and structures is based on an extensive series of lectures delivered by the author at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. Timoshenko explores the early roots of the discipline from the great monuments and pyramids of ancient Egypt through the temples, roads, and fortifications of ancient Greece and Rome. The author fixes the formal beginning of the modern science of the strength of materials with the publications of Galileo's book, "Two Sciences," and traces the rise and development as well as industrial and commercial applications of the fledgling science from the seventeenth century through the twentieth century. Timoshenko fleshes out the bare bones of mathematical theory with lucid demonstrations of important equations and brief biographies of highly influential mathematicians, including: Euler, Lagrange, Navier, Thomas Young, Saint-Venant, Franz Neumann, Maxwell, Kelvin, Rayleigh, Klein, Prandtl, and many others. These theories, equations, and biographies are further enhanced by clear discussions of the development of engineering and engineering education in Italy, France, Germany, England, and elsewhere. 245 figures.

Book excerpt: Engineers need to be familiar with the fundamental principles and concepts in materials and structures in order to be able to design structurers to resist failures. For 4 decades, this book has provided engineers with these fundamentals. Thoroughly updated, the book has been expanded to cover everything on materials and structures that engineering students are likely to need. Starting with basic mechanics, the book goes on to cover modern numerical techniques such as matrix and finite element methods. There is also additional material on composite materials, thick shells, flat plates and the vibrations of complex structures. Illustrated throughout with worked examples, the book also provides numerous problems for students to attempt. New edition introducing modern numerical techniques, such as matrix and finite element methods Covers requirements for an engineering undergraduate course on strength of materials and structures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics of Materials Since 188 5, when the first edition of this work was published, many advances have been made in the subject of Mechanics of Materials. Some of these have been noted in the additions to subsequent editions, but to record and correlate them properly it has now become necessary to rewrite and reset the book. In doing so the author has endeavored to keep the facts of experi ment and practice constantly in View, for the theory Of the subject is merely the formal expression and generalization of observed phenomena. The subject, indeed, no longer consists of a series, of academic exercises in algebra and rational mechanics, but it is indispensably necessary that the phenomena of stress should be clearly understood by the student. While laboratory work is a valuable aid to this end, it is important, in the Opinion of the author, that no recitation or lecture should be held without having test specimens at hand with which to illustrate the phys ical phenomena. The same general plan of treatment has been followed as before, but the subdivisions are somewhat different, and the fifteen chapters of the last edition have been increased to nineteen. The statement of average values of the principal materials. Of engineering has proved so advantageous to students that it is here also followed. Numerous numerical examples are given in the text to exemplify the formulas and methods, these generally relating to cases that arise in practice. To encourage students to think for themselves, one or more problems are given at the end of each article; 1 for the experience of the author has indicated that the solution of many numerical exercises is required in order that students may become well grounded in theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of Materials It is chiefly for the benefit of those users of materials of construction who are disposed to be their own engineers that this series of articles is written, but it is hoped that they will not on that account be without interest to members of the engineering profession. It is intended to present some facts and figures which will show that because a metal is called by the name iron it does not therefore necessarily possess a definite strength, but that its strength should first be determined by test; that published records of tests are not always to be relied upon; that many tests them selves are not reliable; and that in using any material in construction not only its strength but its other properties should be considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Design of Structures: A Text-Book for the Use of Students, Draughtsmen, and Engineers Engaged in Constructional Work The book contains some matter which the author does not believe to be in English text-books in common use. Among this mention might be made of the French or St. Venant method of dealing with combined bending and shear strains 5 the general theory of curved beams and of non-symmetrical beams; the strength of heterogeneous structures such as reinforced concrete a special effort has been made to make the chapter on struts and columns clear, difficulty being commonly experienced in this subject. Although the. Author hopes that the book will be especially useful for students reading for the Assoc. M. Inst. C.e. Examina tion and University degree examinations in Engineering, he has attempted to present the subject in sufficiently practical form for it to be of assistance to all engineers and draughtsmen engaged in constructional work, and has included a number of working drawings.
