Book excerpt: The physical models of interest in the theory of optimum aerodynamic shapes are reviewed. The corresponding mathematical models are illustrated for both problems involving one independent variable and problems involving two independent variables. Then, the solution process is considered. Finally, new trends in the theory of optimum aerodynamic shapes as well as problems of interest in the immediate future are outlined. (Author).

Download or read book General Study of Optimum Aerodynamic Shapes in Supersonic, Hypersonic, and Free-Molecular Flow written by Angelo Miele and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document summarizes the research performed on aerodynamic configurations optimum for flight in the supersonic, hypersonic, and free-molecular flow regimes. The methods of the calculus of variations in one or two independent variables are employed in order to determine configurations having minimum drag, minimum ballistic factor, or maximum lift-to-drag ratio. Both nonlifting vehicles and lifting vehicles are analyzed. Constraints are imposed on geometric quantities such as length, thickness, volume, wetted area, or frontal area. The main analytical results, published in 26 reports and 16 articles, are summarized. (Author).

Book Synopsis General Theory of Conical Flows and Its Application to Supersonic Aerodynamics by : Paul Germain
Download or read book General Theory of Conical Flows and Its Application to Supersonic Aerodynamics written by Paul Germain and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with a method of studying the equation of cylindrical waves particularly indicated for the solution of certain aerodynamic problems. The method reduces problems of a hyperbolic equation to problems of harmonic functions. The study has been applied toward setting up the fundamental principles, to developing their investigation up to calculation of the pressures on the visualized obstacles, and to showing how the initial field of "conical flows" was considerably enlarged by a procedure of integral superposition.

Book Synopsis A Method for Determining the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two- and Three-dimensional Shapes at Hypersonic Speeds by : H. Reese Ivey
Download or read book A Method for Determining the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two- and Three-dimensional Shapes at Hypersonic Speeds written by H. Reese Ivey and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is developed for calculating the pressures on aerodynamic shapes at very high supersonic speeds in dense air with the ratio of specific heats equal to 1. The method is applicable to any body of revolution at zero angle of attack and to any two-dimensional profile. The results of the present paper are compared with previous work of Von Karman and Epstein on this problem and the difference explained.
