This book was released on 1972 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its over-all program in the identification, preparation, and application of materials for use as high-power infrared laser windows, AFCRL has investigated theoretically and experimentally the thermal lensing caused by the distortion and defocusing of a laser beam traversing a material medium. In the report, the vector Kirchhoff approximation is applied to obtain the diffraction field due to a nonuniform laser beam normally incident on an optically isotropic, annular-shaped solid lens. Detailed computations of the on-axis intensity distribution versus time in both abstract and real variables are presented for Gaussian beams incident on various transmitting materials at 10.6 micrometers. The results of the computations demonstrate the role played by induced thermal stresses, incident beam shape, refocused beam, center-chopped beam, the the mating of two compensating materials. Two rough figures of merit are given for rating any window's optical and mechanical-optical performance. It is shown how lensing depends on material parameters. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles S. Sahagian Chief, Electromagnetic Materials Technology Branch Deputy for Electronic Technology Hanscom AFB, MA 01731 I t should not be surprising that an event as significant as the discovery of the laser has had some con comitant impact on other areas of science and technology, but the extent of the impact was grossly unpredicted. Upon perusal of this bibliography, devoted to the subject of laser window and mirror materials, it becomes very apparent that the effect of the laser on materials R&D has been enormous. Several hundred papers and reports, representing millions of dollars of effort, have been promulgated over the past decade; and as new frequencies, improved tunability, higher power, and other charac teristics are achieved, we can expect even greater demands and requirements on the materials com munity. What are some of the highlights disclosec by this bibliography with regard to work already ac complished? First, one can note the extensive investigations into developing new materials while at the same time improving old ones. Among the latter, alkali halides, for example, have essentially had a rebirth. I n the past five years more progress has been achieved in the chemical and structural perfec tion of this class of materials than in the entire preceding century. Also carried along in the surge for improved laser materials have been the alkaline earth fluorides (prime candidates for 3-to 5-J,Lm ap plications), chalcogenides, semiconductors, oxides, and others.

Book Synopsis Sharp Focusing of Laser Light by : Victor V. Kotlyar
Download or read book Sharp Focusing of Laser Light written by Victor V. Kotlyar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers will learn in which ways light can be "confined" within a subwavelength region smaller than half a wavelength. Strictly within the focal spot, all degrees of freedom of light interact and manifest themselves in a dramatic way. The size and shape of the focal spot and the magnitude of side-lobes depend on the polarization state alongside phase and amplitude distributions of a light beam. Readers will learn techniques in which inhomogeneously (i.e., azimuthally and radially) polarized optical beams can be focused. In sharp focus, exotic phenomena can occur, including the negative propagation of light and a toroidal optical flow. Throughout the book, the numerical simulation is performed using the rigorous solution of Maxwell’s equations based on a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) approach, which makes the results of modeling highly reliable. The photonic components, including optical metasurfaces, discussed in the book have been implemented using state-of-the-art techniques of electron beam writing and reactive ion-beam etching of microrelief. Two chapters are concerned with photonics hot spots, which deal with the control of light by means of optical metasurfaces and the generation of an energy backflow in the region of sharp focus of a laser beam. Another hot topic is diffractive polarization converters implemented as subwavelength diffraction gratings to convert polarization of light. By way of illustration, such converters are shown to perform linear-to-radial or linear-to-azimuthal polarization conversion. The book describes advanced photonic components fabricated by the authors to perform sharp focusing of light, including binary zone plates, binary axicons, a planar photonic crystal lens, diffraction polarization converters, and metalenses. This book is a must-have for individuals and institutions studying cutting edge optics.

Book Synopsis Stress-Induced Birefringence, Critical Window Orientation, and Thermal Lensing Experiments by : CA. Klein
Download or read book Stress-Induced Birefringence, Critical Window Orientation, and Thermal Lensing Experiments written by CA. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proper assessment of thermal lensing phenomena in high-average-power laser windows involves an evaluation of two optical distortion coefficients: (a) the coefficient X+, which combines the effects of temperature-induced change in refractive index, surface bulging through constrained expansion, and photoelasticity averaged over the principal stress directions, and (b) the coefficient X-, which exists only if there is stress birefringence. This evaluation can be performed for 111 -- oriented and for randomly-oriented aggregates of cubic single crystals. It is emphasized that the calculations require correct inputs in terms of elastic and photo-elastic coefficients. Among presently contemplated key laser-window material candidates, only CaF2 can exhibit significant stress-birefringence effects; this is not so in the 111 orientation, which reflects a critical situation in the sense of Joiner, Marburger, and Steier. Windows made of KCl exhibit isotropic distortion patterns because the magnitude of the thermo-optic coefficient is such that the "small-birefringence condition," X-/X+ “ 1, is satisfied. The results of interferometric testing substantiate these considerations.

Book Synopsis Computer Solutions to Heat and Diffraction Equations in High Energy Laser Windows by : Peter D. Gianino
Download or read book Computer Solutions to Heat and Diffraction Equations in High Energy Laser Windows written by Peter D. Gianino and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To quantify the effects of thermal lensing, an efficient computer program package was developed and programmed to run on a CDC6600 computer. The package was written to handle Gussian-shaped beams incident on either a thin disc- or annular-shaped cylindrical window. Three coupled programs make up the package: TEMP5, which solves the full heat transport equation within the window for any given set of initial and boundary conditions on each surface; TIKIRK, which solves the vector Kirchhoff diffraction integrals for the beam transmitted to the far field; and DISPLAY, which plots these temperatures and/or intensities in a variety of ways, including three-dimensional perspective views.
