Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book on The General Theory of Electrical Machines, by B. Adkins, which was published in 1957, has been well received, as a manual containing the theories on which practical methods of calculating machine performance can be based, and as a text-book for advanced students. Since 1957, many important developments have taken place in the practical application of electrical machine theory. The most important single factor in the development has been the increasing availability of the digital computer, which was only beginning to be used in the solution of machine and power system problems in 1957. Since most of the recent development, particularly that with which the authors have been concerned, has related to a. c. machines, the present book, which is in other respects an up-to-date version of the earlier book, deals primarily with a. c. machines. The second chapter on the primitive machine does deal to some extent with the d. c. machine, because the cross-field d. c. generator servesas an introduction to the two-axis theory and can be used to provide a simple explanation of some of the mathematical methods. The equations also apply directly to a. c. commutator machines. The use of the word 'general' in the title has been criticized. It was never intended to imply that the treatment was comprehen sive in the sense that every possible type of machine and problem was dealt with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Alternating Current Machinery These problems chiefly concern the theory of the operation of alternating current machinery, and are such as we give to the fourth year students in electrical engineering in this subject. In each chapter the problems of a similar nature are grouped together, and those of each group are then arranged in the approximate order of their difficulty. The groups in each chapter follow each other in as logical an order as possible, both from point of difficulty and the presentation of the subject. In order that this collection of problems may be useful among different classes of students a large variety has been included, ranging from the very simple to those of considerable difficulty. Wherever it is essential the data have been taken from actual apparatus. This was possible through the courtesy of two of the large manufacturing companies. In some of the problems so few data are given that approximate methods of solution must be used, but care has been taken to so state them that the errors thus introduced need not be large. This lack of data is frequently met in practice. It has been thought best not to give introductory paragraphs for each chapter as was done in the preceding volume of problems inasmuch as they would have to be of considerable length to be of much value. The answers to the problems will probably be ready for publication in the fall of 1914. They will be available to all but undergraduate students at a nominal price. Undergraduate students can obtain them only on the recommendation of their instructors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating-Current Machine Design Being Instructions for the Design of Motors and Generators This volume is especially prepared for self-instruction in the art of designing alternating-current machinery. Care has been taken to remain strictly within the province of design; the reader being assumed to possess knowledge of the principles of electricity and magnetism, and to be familiar with the theory of operation of electrical machines. The designs are carried out according to methods developed in actual practice and are supplemented by data and dimensions of lines of machines actually built by several of the largest American and European companies. The book is divided into two parts: one treating the design of direct-current machines, and the other that of alternating-current machines; each part being followed by a list of questions which clearly bring out the important points to be remembered.
